I will buy this as soon as it comes out and I would recommend every metal fan to do so. If you come across this thread and have never listened to Voivod, go ahead and do it right away!

So excited for this, and for the hopefully upcoming gigs. The band was so on fire the last couple of times I caught them on stage, and I just have a really good feeling about this new album, too.

I can't wait to listen to Orb Confusion, that has to be the best song title of the year.

Target Earth and Post-Society were awesome, there's no reason this one will be different!

Totally agreed. They can seemingly do no wrong, and I'm super excited for this.

'Obsolete Beings' is cool and very much like a more metallic Nothingface (honestly, I think that album is where they dropped a lot of their metallic leanings, which is what most people say about Angel Rat). Cool stuff, however, I really wish Away's snare sound, well, sounded more like him. :(

Digging the preview tracks so far. Thinking I'll probably end up enjoying this one more than "Target Earth".

I like the new track, but for some reason the video reminds me of Slayer's World Painted Blood video. It's either similar artwork or animation. Still cool regardless.

It might just beat Varathron for my album of the year!

The last single sounds absolutely unique and pushes the boundaries yet again. Those who compare the song to former Voivod records just do that because they don't know how else they could describe this sound. Target Earth was indeed reminiscent of records like Dimension Hatross but The Wake seems to be something completely outstanding again. The music video of the new track is also pure gold, made by a Romanian fan who clearly understands what this band is all about. The Wake could be album of the year material. It will finally be released in three days and I'm really looking forward to it.

So far, it could be a contender for album of the year. That track is pure excellence.

Only three songs into the album and I'm already in awe. Seriously, it must have been a while since the last time I would fall in love with a new album so early. And that last bit of “End of Dormancy“ when they directly refer to one of their earlier songs (shamefully, I'm not to able to tell which one, so help me out, please), probably gave me the biggedt smile in recent times as well.

I just finished my first listen and I'm already spinning it again. The Wake is just excellent all the way through. No filler on it IMO. Right now it's hard for me to pick a favorite track because i really like them all so far.

I'm liking this, some really sweet grooves and riffs and it shows they haven't changed their sound. I wish it was a bit more experimental though. This basically sounds like Nothingface but really polished up and more accessible. Since Nothingface is my favorite thing I've heard from em I don't mind - but it's a bit more conservative than I expect from Voivod I guess.

edit: The last song is really cool. Nice spacey, trippy stuff.

Let's put some Voivod reviews up on the site! This band deserves more attention and praise! Jonquière rocks!

After 2-3 listens, this is about where I am at with it as well. The problem is that Nothingface is not really among my favorites by Voivod. There are some nice parts here and there on The Wake, and I do like it, but it is not the contender for my AOTY list that I thought it might be. Ah well, still impressive for a band this far into their career.

Just my opinion, but that cover artwork is fucking ugly, just like the last one. Voivod seem to have lost their path in the visual department, which is a pity.

Only one listen so far, but I love this. It is indeed a great deal to digest, but it's a really progressive and fascinating experience the way only Voivod can deliver. I don't think it sounds that much like Nothingface, either; Mongrave gives it his own touch, and it's a good bit heavier in parts without being quite so obtuse (Nothingface is great but it was always the hardest Voivod album for me to get into). So far "Iconspiracy" is a real stand-out for me -- that song is a fucking monster! Hope they come around here soon. Also hope my physical copy arrives! It sucks when a band's from your own country but you have to order their stuff from Germany! Then again, I didn't have to make the pre-order....

Also, I love Snake's vocals nowadays. He's definitely one of the weird elements that sometimes makes Voivod hard to digest for people, but I feel he's got such a great character that really started to come through for me when I experienced them live. He always has this unique Snake personality even when he's sounding like a broken robot. But he can actually do a lot of cool things with his voice. If anything, too, he may have improved with age -- not many singers one can really say that about.

Snake truly is a highlight of the album. It's too early to tell, but this very well could be his best and most dynamic performance on an album. Received the CD yesterday and have been listening to it off and on. Loving it so far and I feel like it strongly captures the feel of most of the band's eras, while offering something new in the process.

heard it yesterday and its good, it seems a bit more melody oriented than the last one. Also is it just me or is Snake impersonating UDO a bit on this record?

I think with this and the Post Society EP, it's safe to say we're witnessing the second prime in this great band's career. It's simply unbelievable how good this album is... after a dozen or so listens it still continues to grow. Only time will tell, but I might place The Wake on the same lofty plateau as the Killing Technology to The Outer Limits run, all of which being some of my favorite albums since I was in high school. An inspiration.

I bought it after their Leeds gig on Thursday. Basically, if you're looking for something with a vibe and feel similar to Nothingface, then, this will be a great album for you. I can't say how good it is just yet (it's certainly good!) but basically if you like the gloomier stuff on Nothingface this is very much for you.

Even a step or three down from Post Society would make this a great album.
