Hi,
Through the last years we saw a petty big hype for some portuguese Raw Black Metal bands like Candelabrum or Black Cilice.
Also, I'd like to get more into this scene and discover some current bands (and if all these bands are related). I'd also like to learn about the history of Black Metal in Portugal.
Can you indicate me any article about it or some good bands to listen to ? That'd be really great !

PS: Sorry if my english is bad

I’m not sure about any blogs. But I’m a huge fanatic of the Portuguese scene. Bands I highly recommend are Dolentia, Irae, Vetala, Cripta Oculta, Morte Incandescente, Inthyflesh, Cavemaster, Holocausto Em Chamas, Onirik etc etc.

Dolentia is a BIG must listen, easily my favorite out of all the bands in Portugal. Everything they’ve done at this point is pure class. First full length is amazing, didn’t think the second would compare, I was wrong!

I am somewhat out of the loop with this scenes, as Black Cilice is one of the only artists I know. (And i really love the last couple records, Mysteries is amazing) I will check out Dolentia, thank you for the req.

Black Howling are good. Not a great fan of the other Portuguese stuff I've heard.

Aside from the already mentioned bands, I suggest Corpus Christii and Inverno Eterno.

this still takes a spin now and then
Viingrid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_f1o93WlS0

sadly they disbanded without releasing anything else, thought they had potential although the vocals could be better

this from some old schoolmates of mine:
In tha Umbra
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGB7SXoHLiw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIK3EyoAyZE

ironically i didn't liked it back then and it was only after losing contact with them i started listening to their stuff

you can also try this forum: https://www.metalunderground.pt/

it's about metal in general but there's plenty of stuff about BM to look into, it's in portuguese though, no idea if you can speak the language but thought i'd mention anyway

it's not really part of the "scene" people talk about nowadays, but the Decayed catalogue is amazingly large and mostly high quality.

the latest Candelabrum is much better than anything Black Cilice wise...

How would you define a Portuguese scene, other than being just from Portugal? Are they stylistically different from other countries? Same goes for a lot of other "scenes" like the Polish one or the Greek one etc

There's two general categories of bands in the Portuguese scene: There's the vaguely Sargeist-like more melodic and layered black metal bands like InThyFlesh and Onirik, and there are the raw black metal bands like Vetala and Black Cilice who create a ghostly atmosphere. For some reason, the country has been on a roll lately. Candelabrum, Occelensbrigg, Voemmr, and Viles Vitae are also worth checking out.

One of my favourite Portuguese bands was Serpent Lore. They only released 1 demo, but t'was a fantastic one. Great use of keys and clean guitars over distorted parts. Sort of reminded me of early Troll.

I'll have to mention Gaerea.
Amazing Black Metal. There's riffs, atmosphere, aggression, some dissonance for good measure... They tick all my boxes.
Not sure if they fit into any scene in particular but they're one of my favourite acts from Portugal (regardless of genre) right now.

Do Sirius count? I know they split up ages ago, but they were really good.

Aeons of Magick still ranks as one of the greatest symphonic black metal albums I've ever heard, so they'd better count!

Only band I know mentioned ITT, and I've only listened to Aeons of Magik. The Stargate being my favourite track by them, and it's 100% instrumental.
