Gorycz - Piach

Image

M-A says this is avant-garde black metal which is a fitting descriptor, but I feel like there's sprinkles of death metal in here, too. The vocals have that black metal rasp to them, and the music is a little strange. Not just the production, but also the riffs and the simplistic, yet captivating drum patterns here that go from barely anything to blasts. It sounds pretty cool and well worth checking out.

This new Cosmic Atrophy album has blown my mind in and out of several wormholes. Well done.

I'm liking the sound of this, too, despite not being hugely into Codex Incubo (sorry rexxz). Physical copies are expected in the future, so I'm keen to grab one of those when it's released.

Thanks for listening! And it's totally fine and actually kind of expected that an album written by a 17 year old kid wouldn't be that great, and I myself am very intimately aware of the flaws of that album. I'm happy to be able to come back with something much better this time.

No worries, and I didn't know you were that young back then. That's pretty cool. :) Keep us updated when physicals of the album come out, too. I will be keen to snap up a copy!

Eh, it didn't do much for me. Granted I didn't finish the album thanks to having to go into work, but only the fourth track grabbed me in any substantial way. It's basically the same beef I had with Codex Incubo, it's a lot of riffs and ideas that don't really go anywhere, only this one doesn't have the added benefit of being incredibly unique for its time since Demilich influenced DM is hardly novel anymore.

Hell yeah, that's awesome. It's definitely a huge step up from the first one as far as I am concerned. We have a much clearer goal in mind with the style and aesthetic. This album doesn't have nearly as much of the Demilich influence as the first one, instead drawing on other sources such as pulp horror film soundtracks from the 1950s-1970s, including chamber orchestra scores and the early pioneering days of synthesizers. Every song and riff was deliberate and crafted to build upon a story that's also told through the lyrics, and I'm really proud of how it all turned out. Thanks for listening!

Usually a lurker here but I thought I'd join and give this a go...

New Whoredom Rife album released a few days ago sounds great. A pretty good year for Norwegian BM with this, Mare and Djevel.

https://terraturpossessions.bandcamp.com/album/whoredom-rife-nid-hymner-av-hat

A few other black metal favorites of mine which haven't been mentioned here:

Afsky - Sorg (bleak and melancholic Danish BM. This one has been nailed into my 2018 top10 since March/April)
https://afsky.bandcamp.com/album/sorg

Det Eviga Leendet - Lenience (another gem from Fallen Empire records, who rarely disappoint. Beautiful melodies, unrelenting pace and a fitting if not a bit atypical vocal performance for this style)
https://detevigaleendet.bandcamp.com/album/lenience

HWWAUOCH - HWWAUOCH (more Fallen Empire stuff. Offers a more sinister and chaotic blend of black metal, similar to other Prava Kollektiv groups Arkhtinn, Voidsphere and Mahr but with a slightly different twist)
https://hwwauoch.bandcamp.com/album/hwwauoch

Death Scepter - Black Trance (BM equivalent of hypnotic meditation music. It's raw and repetitive but surprisingly easy to listen and there's definitely beauty in the subtleties)

When's Demilich going to finally release another? Those few 2000s tracks they did were just as good as their debut album. C'mon Demilich.

New Mass Infection is actually... good?! It's nowhere near original or fresh, but it's well executed semi-techy brutal death in the vein of Hideous Divinity but sounding more leaning to USDM. Their drummer is actually the guy from Hideous Divinity so that's that.

Worth a shot for anyone into Hour of Penance/Hideous Divinity or those Morbid Angelesque US brutal death bands.

A Canorous Quintet - The Only Pure Hate MMXVIII

I have to say, as far as re-recordings go, this one is pretty good and worth hearing because of the low-quality recording of the original. Overall I wouldn't say this new version is better than the original, because there's a certain youthful charm to the original that the band can't re-create, but it's certainly nice to hear these great melodic death songs with a better production. There's also an additional track included that was written for the original album but never recorded until now, and that's worth hearing. If you're a fan of the band, I'd recommend checking this out.

He nailed it with Slugdge. I can't really argue against it being AOTY. They absolutely nailed it this year. Actually, this isn't that bad of a list come to think of it. Actually wait no, it is indeed pretty bad. No Alkaloid, no Asphagor, no Outre. Blah.

Well I can see many lists looking like that. Slugdge got top 20 for me. I was expecting to see Tomb Mold there at least haha.

Not everything can be included, I guess. I think it's a solid list. I disagree regarding Slugdge, though - never did quite get into that one.

Add me to the list of admirers to the new Cosmic Atrophy. Quite good. Killer guitar tone throughout and perfectly executed and mixed vocals. Riffs were all pretty good too. Each song kept me engaged. Dug the doomy vibe of that later song too. Far more mature and refined songwriting throughout, not surprisingly. Good job rexxz. Get those CDs going for it, man!

Yeah, I'm going to need a Cosmic Atrophy CD as well. I liked the last release quite a bit, but after listening to the new album for the first time last night, I'm really into it.

Deceased - Ghostly White

That's my album of the year. Totally worth the wait; hopefully it won't be so long until the next one!

Voivod - The Wake

Almost as good as the new Deceased, maybe as good; I just like Deceased better.

I enjoyed what I heard from Kamelot's new album, and also the new Judas Priest. There are some others I'm forgetting right now, but I'll post them later when I remember.

Slugdge is the only one I've even listened to on that list. Suppose I should at least check out Behemoth and Necrophobic. I'm only familiar with like 5 of those bands, what am I missing?

So far, the albums I know are going to stick to my top 10 are Autokrator, Scorched, Imperial Triumphant, and Hooded Menace. I have a good idea what the rest is going to be, I just need to let everything fall into place.

Bathyum - The Church Of Euthanasia
https://bathyum.bandcamp.com/album/the- ... euthanasia

really nice find, i've never been big into the UK BM scene, but this year things seem to be clicking, Blutvial, VOW and now this

kinda sounds a bit like early Marduk meets Taake (at least to me)

have to check the 1st album

4. Irreversible Mechanism - Immersion
5. Between the Buried and Me - Automata I + II

Alkaloid will be in my top 10, but that's the only one from the above list. A few like Inferi and Obscura are honorable mentions. Inferi actually almost made it to my number 10 spot.

I've never listened to Deceased since I got Supernatural Addiction through some sort of HHR deal for free years ago, but I decided to check out their new release and I'd be stupid not to include it in my top 10 for this year. I have no idea how they managed to release something this good with THESE FUCKING RIFFS. I think it's time to check out their discography.

Lurker popping in to drop a few names which I haven't seen getting much mention here...

Madder Mortem - Marrow
My favorite of the year. Takes a few spins to fully sink the hooks in, once it does it is devastating. What a gift this band has in Agnete's voice and lyrics to back up their wonderful instrumentations. I understand why not everyone cherishes this band the way some people (myself included) do, but it's worth opening yer mind for an hour and letting this flow.

Vanishing Kids - Heavy Dreamer
This band conveys a similar sense of life as Madder Mortem, while occupying a very different place on the musical spectrum. Wispy psychedelic doom is usually not my cup o' tea, but Heavy Dreamer has substance like few other categorically similar albums do. Detailed, meticulous song writing with great band chemistry (think your favorite 70's prog bands) and emotional ooomph. Gets better with each listen. If this hits you, it'll probably hit you hard.

Into Eternity - The Sirens
Back with their first album in ten years. Lyrically, they are as dedicated to misery as ever. Musically, they are as much fun to listen to as ever. Solid prog/extreme/slightly-powerishy songwriting delivered via virtuosic individual performances. Best production they've had in years.

The new Construct of Lethe is also really striking my fancy. Probably favorite DM album of the year.
