Welp, I did my civic duty for the year. Writing about music is just so hard for me for some reason.

It's the same for me. I only managed to write three today because they were all about demos. I know what I want to say but whenever I want to start writing I'm hit with this white-page syndrome and don't know what to say. I need a couple of days whenever I want to tackle bigger releases like full lengths and such.

I've got a few rough drafts started. I'm bouncing around from release to release, writing notes, but I am not submitting anything just yet since I want to refine each review a little.

Some things are harder to review. My Secret Satan is pretty tricky since I don't have a history with it, and I'm trying to think of comparisons and the like. I like it, I like listening to it, but it isn't grabbing me by the balls or provoking me to bang my head right into my desk causing my mantises that are also on my desk to fly up in the air and get pissed off at me.

Others are really easy though. So... those are what I'm starting with. Carefully... the mantises will gang up on me if I bang my head too hard again...

I know what you mean. I'm having to double up and write multiple a day because I'll be traveling next weekend and my goal is usually to contribute each day of the challenge. It gets draining, especially since I'm mostly reviewing death metal.

Also, I sliced my left thumb open trying to cut a stale ass bagel this morning. I was worrying it would impede my ability to type and keep up the necessary pace, until I got home, started typing and realized I dont use my left thumb for any keys, not even the spacebar :P

Please do one if you prepared it already. I'd like to see another opinion, since I found most of their albums a bit samey.

Also, it's interesting that lots of people are saying that they can't write the reviews quickly enough. I'm the other way and could maybe finish a passable 500 word draft in 20 minutes, but that doesn't actually give me enough time to listen to the whole album during the review. Of course, pre-listening and taking a few notes helps on that count, so I can skip tracks when I'm actually writing.

Me literally every time there's a review challenge:

"I'm not gonna participate, I don't really like these. I always rush them out instead of taking my time and writing a good review".

*Day 2, already submitted 2 virgin album reviews*

I got a few good ones in today. Felt good to keep 'em short and concise - no need to go on and on for paragraphs.

Hey Metantoine. Good review of that Musta Risti album. I’m not a super huge doom fan, but I really enjoyed that album. That singer is pretty damn good.

Thanks dude, good recommendation coming from the best ex MA cop.

I'm not aiming this at anyone (but I am!) but remember the spirit of the challenge and honor Diamhea's memory by not stockpiling reviews. It's the equivalent of finding what were your gifts before Christmas.

Yes, just seconding both Tony and Stormy above me.

I have been really impressed by the effort put into this challenge so far, and I want to see everyone participating to their fullest. You guys are great, and please do keep it up. That said, I am a little concerned about the number of singles/comps being submitted for the challenge, and the fact that it seems there's some participants that have stockpiled reviews. I'd much rather not need to impose new rules or to reinstate old ones. All I can stress is, for the sake of the challenge and the "spirit" of the challenge, don't go overboard with the singles/comps and please try to avoid stockpiling.

I get that people really want to "win" the challenge, but the challenge first-and-foremost is a group effort and one that is meant to stress the quality and talents we all have and are capable of achieving together. I hate to say this, because it hurts having to say it, but I'd much rather see us "lose" the challenge with 100 of the best quality reviews ever written on this site than to see us "win" the challenge with 600 low effort, low quality or rushed reviews. The best challenges are those where we work as a team to showcase the best of the site by the best of the site. The dream is to see us write 600 of those best quality reviews for a single challenge. That would be a feat worth a challenge!

With that said, please continue having fun and enjoying yourselves. ;)

Diamhea actually did that several times in a single week order to reach that 100 review record that you see from a couple years back. It is actually very doable if you do a lot of advanced listening (you can all but guarantee that most of what you listen to will not get touched before a challenge if you aim for really obscure stuff), create a specific template that you largely stick to for each review you write, and keep things concise.

I treat this review challenge the same way I do NaNoWriMo - I might organize things ahead of time, but I don't actually write anything until the event starts.

I do work on multiple reviews at once - if I get stuck in one, I work on a different one. Then I go back to the one I was stuck and I am able to find the words better, or I have some benchmark to compare it to if I reviewed later works by the same band.

I prepare my going through what I've been listening to this year, looking up some long time faves if they have any virgins and then think of albums I for some reason have a clear opinion on.
I then try to listen to everything at least once again before the challenge. Then during the challenge I listen and write.

The year that I wrote the most I had a bunch of free time that week and spent a lot of time pre-listening to everything that I planned to hit. Then I just powered through a review while the album was playing in the background so it was fresh. I was able to submit a whole bunch on the last two days because I had a whole lot of albums with half written reviews, so I could just knock them out in quick succession. But that was the last two days. Not the first two...

Some people get into a groove and just go nuts the first day, followed by a period of slow down the following day due to fatigue. I would also like to point out that Diamhea actually wrote 18 reviews the first day of the winter 2016 challenge when he set the current record. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure he was in double digits every single day of that challenge. Now, I will admit that I have a tendency to start writing about an hour ahead of midnight the Sunday before the first day of the challenge to get myself warmed up (I've done this regularly since 2007), but I think it may be a little hasty to start accusing people of stockpiling if they opt to submit a few reviews during the wee hours of Sunday night/Monday morning at the very start of the challenge, though I will echo your sentiment that doing nothing but compilations and singles for an entire challenge defeats the purpose. I like to mix things up a bit and hit a few shorter releases here and there to keep my groove going, but since the old 5-single cap was instituted I've avoided doing more than 5 in a single challenge.

Oh, h_u, rest assured I don't wish to accuse anyone, or condemn it outright. People starting reviews a few hours or days before the challenge is inevitable and very common. Besides, and in all honesty, even if people were stockpiling it would be practically impossible to enforce anything against it. There's many ways to get around it, if that's really what you want to do. I've just been noticing, however, that there's some reviews started in, say, November that are being submitted now. I won't accuse them or anyone else of stockpiling. However, I just want to reiterate that - as far as the spirit of the challenge goes - writing a bunch of reviews months in advance and submitting them for the challenge isn't really what the creators of the challenge had in mind when it was originally started. I think doing that goes beyond the whole purpose of the challenge, IMO.

Again, I want to stress that I'm not accusing anyone of anything. I just want to leave that as a friendly reminder, or observation.

I see, that's a bit of a different situation, I wasn't aware that anyone had reviews saved from a month ago and were just being finished now. I just thought some of us were getting dubious about the number of reviews that were being put out by individual users the first couple days, which struck me as a bit odd given that there have been several previous challenges where that wasn't an issue, I think I may have misread your post because I still had SweetLeaf's previous observation in the back of my mind. I'm fully in agreement with you on this, apologies for the confusion.

1. Do all the listening from about two months in advance.
2. Take 50-100 words of notes for each release you listen to.
3. Do most of your work preparation the previous week so you have more free time.
4. Wake up at 7am, write a couple before work.
5. Go to work and blast through all the necessary stuff.
6. Keep listening while you're doing paperwork/computer work, adding to a review in one sentence increments.
7. Do two more in lunch break after eating (if lunch is an hour and a half).
8. Write on your phone on the way to the company's other site.
9. Write on your phone on the way back from the company's other site.
10. Do a couple more late afternoon because you've finished all your work.
11. Go home and eat something terrible because it's quick.
12. Write several more until you go to bed at 12.

You can adjust that for my timezone and see what times I publish (I think I'm 13 hours ahead of MA), but the reviews challenge really makes me use all the time management skills I have to get things done.

As for stockpiling, I may have used that for a couple of reviews several challenges ago, but what made the big difference to how many I could write was the pre-listening. I couldn't even finish listening to 12 releases in a day if I hadn't done that.

If I'm hurting the challenge by doing a few too many compilations (I only remember doing the RevBiz one this week), EPs and demos (some of which may be short enough to be singles at 15-20 minutes), I'll make an effort to do at least three quarters full-lengths from here on. Naturally, some of the release types will be different, but I take the point.

No worries Gasmask. I can't speak for others but nothing you do hurts the challenge. You've been great. In fact the whole cohort of reviewers this challenge have been good. Please do keep up the good work. Let's make this the best challenge yet!

I did notice someone who reviewed a single that also features on a split they reviewed last challenge...but as you can guess, I've been writing more than reading this week.

The singles and comps are like virgins with daddy issues: easy. Don't wanna flood the challenge with those!

In full disclosure, I actually thought everyone was ganging up on gasmask so I was rushing to his defense. Him and I were chatting a bit via private message a little while ago and we have kind of an unofficial competition going on between each other this go around, though I fear he's probably going to leave me in the dust at this rate.

I decided to hit the Conception EP even though 2 others already did so, it was on my short-list and I felt I had a unique enough perspective on it to be worth a read. Probably also going to hit the latest Brainstorm (which Empyreal already did) since I was going to be reviewing it for Sonic Perspectives anyway.

This may be true with singles of literally a single song, and stupid "best of" compilations for famous bands.. But I put in plenty of effort for reviewing demos, splits and EPs. Not exactly easy if you take it seriously.

I managed to find the inspiration for the review I was gonna write tomorrow (or today? it's already 00:04 here). At any rate, I'm quite satisfied with how both turned out. Can't really remember how many I wrote for the only other challenge in which I participated but I'll try to hit a couple more this next couple of days as I most probably won't be able to write this weekend. I'm having a lot of fun doing this, even though I sometimes struggle to find what to say about the music I listen to :-D

I actually find EPs and demos a tad more difficult to write a full review for than LPs because I have to do more work deconstructing the individual songs to get the obligatory 4 paragraphs out of it (I rarely write reviews that are less than 3 paragraphs, it makes me feel like I'm being lazy). I don't often review splits, but I would imagine they carry a similar challenge in how you have to switch gears when talking about different bands within a single review while trying to sum everything up in one unified assessment.

Having said that, I do find it helpful to switch over to shorter length releases during these challenges after doing a handful of LPs, the change in dynamics involved helps me to reestablish my rhythm. I also like to throw in the occasional live album if possible as it accomplishes the same thing.

In full disclosure, I actually thought everyone was ganging up on gasmask so I was rushing to his defense. Him and I were chatting a bit via private message a little while ago and we have kind of an unofficial competition going on between each other this go around, though I fear he's probably going to leave me in the dust at this rate.

Very happy to hear this! However, you might not have factored in that I tend to be more productive during the weekdays because I can't ignore my wife for 48 hours, unlike the situation with my colleagues.

Everyone has their various ways and methods of keeping the output high for a whole week, so I won't feel bad if someone who altered their approach (or chooses various kinds of releases) ends up getting the highest total. Just as long as the reviews aren't all boring!

Nah, not intended to be vague.

In any case, let's not dwell on this. I want you all to enjoy the challenge, which so far is turning out to be one of our most successful ones yet.

Read through some reviews and good job to you all. I've got some friends visiting this week so I probably won't be able to pound out any reviews myself, but I'm glad the challenge is a success so far.

Awesome GTK review, Bastard. Been bumping that album a lot lately, so ridiculously awesome.
