Come on, guys. Portal has clearly identifiable riffs, even on "Transcending a Mere Multiverse." In fact they're quite a riffy band most of the time.

I agree actually but still feel they got this feel to their material that i only find in noise and drone

ION actually grew on me quite a bit over the year. For me, it benefits from being one of those beginning-to-end albums where I can listen to the album in one sitting (its relative shortness helps) and it actually feels more complete if I do so. Sort of a the whole is greater the sum of its parts experience.

I don't understand all the love for Portal. Their album is one big noisy mess. When I first listened to one of the tracks on YouTube, I seriously thought maybe I was hearing a corrupted file, and sought out the track elsewhere. Nope, whole thing sounds like that, like a fork stuck in a garbage disposal.

Just an FYI there are more songs on the new Portal album than "Spores." :D

Even my 9 year old boy asked me 'what the hell' was going on when Spores came on.

I very rarely agree with the Angry Metal Guy stuff but i'm so happy they listed Depravity as a top 10 album i'm just going to share their list. Probably my choice for best DM album of 2018, well, at least for more traditional DM, Autokrator is just too good although there's a lot more than just DM in that one.

I can't stand AMG's reviews (I disagree with everything they do literally 90% of the time) but they do cover a good deal of content.

I never listened to that Depravity record, but I always found it strange that they used the name of a relatively well-known death metal band from the 90s.

The Metal Church album was actually pretty good, and I haven't listened to anything by Metal Church in years. It's not going to make my top 10, but it's an Honorable Mention.

I think 2018 was a weak year for worthwhile thrash albums. The best thrash album of the year was Rapture "Paroxysm of Hatred," and that came out way back in January. Nothing else topped it all year, it still reigns as the most vicious and intense death/thrash of the year. On the flip side, I wasn't nearly as impressed with the debut Chemicaust album as the rest of the internet seemed to be, and I thought the new Black Fast album sucked. I was also disappointed with the new Nervosa album. No other real stand outs for me all year, not a lot of old school thrash bands released new albums, no new bands hit the scene like Power Trip this year, no killer blackened thrash albums like Antichrist or Condor released last year, hell not even any semi-decent Vektor clonage in 2018.

There was the new Teleport demo.

I didn't hear any great thrash metal albums either, certainly none that were as good as that Condor album from last year.

I'm really glad to see someone mention Rapture's album. It's the second coming of Ripper (but without the crazy bass playing), but it seemed to get largely ignored.

I also agree on Nervosa - it was totally unmemorable. Black Fast also was a disappointment. Chemicaust was ok, but I never listen to it.

My favourite thrash releases were from the big names: Hatchet, Exmortus, Gama Bomb, and Angelus Apatrida. Slightly more obscure choices (that you are likely aware of) are Oxygen Destroyer, Tantara, and Traitor.

I was let down by the new Untimely Demise and Ultra-Violence records. Both good albums, but not as strong as their previous work.

The one album I'm totally split on is Crisix' record. I'll have to revisit it, but it's just so weird.

Bit late now, but I really didn't see much talk about the debut from Reversed: absolutely nasty and raw(not in quality) thrash/black, midpaced most of the time. You seriously need to check this out.

Loved this list. Not agreeing with all the albums, and a few which I didn't listen, but lots of strong choices.

http://www.thelairoffilth.com/2018/12/t ... w&m=1#more

Special mention to the Abyssal/Carcinoma split. Really awesome stuff.

Well, here's my list I've submitted. Already realizing I left out Kraanium and Deceased and more. Hmm.

1. Beyond Creation: Algorythm
(They have ascended so much since The Aura, unbelievable record and godlike musicianship and technicality)

2. Chapel of Disease: ...and as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye
(Fucking narsilianshard will forever get my thanks for this, it's like what Morbus Chron could have been except they made it their own style, psychedelic death metal is the best description)

3. Rapture: Paroxysm of Hatred
(Thrash is a fucking monotonous genre but these guys are absolutely insane. Recommended if you like Aspid and Ripper and Epidemic of Violence)

4. Skeletal Remains: Devouring Mortality
(Fucking riffs, drumming, and production are insane especially with Van Drunen jr on vocals)

5. Deafheaven: Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
(Don't laugh at me, this album hit hard)

6. Obliteration: Cenotaph Obscure
(Death/Thrashy at times, great record and been looking forward to this since Black Death Horizon)

7. Portal: Ion
(A monster of an album from start to finish, chaos manifested into riffs, a soundtrack to sleep paralysis)

8. Reversed: Widow Recluse
(primal blackened thrash which is mostly midpaced, this is alcoholism incarnate)

9. Scorched: Ecliptic Butchery
(HEAVY RIFFS)

10. Dödsrit: Spirit Crusher
(one man band with feeling in those beautiful riffs and vocals)

It was a solid year, but the scary thing is that I haven't even heard half of the albums on the list Somar posted. What the fuck. Some cool sounding names in there too. As expected there wasn't much quality output for thrash at all besides Chemicaust. I couldn't get into Satan as much as I should have either. My favorite part is the results, soon!

Nice list.

yeah, a few names in that list i didn't heard too. That's why i always look for this kinds of end of the year best of lists, and why i appreciate you putting yours here and looking forward for others to do the same

Always lots of missed good stuff you can find, specially when you see them together with some names you already know and like

A big surprise on that list was to see Temple Desecration up there. I clearly remember giving that one a couple of spins just to toss it aside and never looking at it again. Certainly will get back to that one and give it another try.

Slightly different order, but there's a fair bit of overlap between yours and mine, particularly on doom/stoner albums. I'm glad to see someone else still really enjoys that Wolftooth debut. There was a little attention to it when it came out then nothing. I was wondering if I would be the only one ranking it, but it looks like there will be company.

Jesus christ. The more I listen to this fucking Outre record, Hollow Earth, the higher it creeps up on my list. What an absolutely brutal, unrelenting, masterful display of extreme black/death. Unreal!

No Point In Living's latest album is by far his best. Incredible DSBM from Japan. A hour of pure depression. Just what the doctor ordered.

Listening to this now. Thanks for the heads up. As a whole I find the bands on Terratur Possessions tend to be extremely hit and miss, but this one sounds promising thus far.

To those disappointed with the thrash albums of 2018, check out Teutonic Slaughter - Puppeteer of Death:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4waV21k ... 5mi2sPSeWg

Extremely good German old school thrash, similar to Sodom, Destruction, Darkness and Violent Force. One of the greatest albums of the year.

^ it’s definitely going to be somewhere on my list too. Phantasmagoric Transcendence wins fucking everything. In other news I’ve finally been listening to Elegy and it rocks - there’s a doom influence at work that wasn’t on the last two. Autumnal, dynamic fare for gravegazing.
