There's a German post-punk band called EA80, they've been playing in the same line-up since 1980, they've never been signed to a label and always self-released their albums and they have songwriting skills that put Queen and many classical composers to shame, but no one outside of Germany knows them because they don't understand the language. It's a shame sometimes.

Listen to how the songs develop, it doesn't get more masterful than that.

Just got this, completely random, apropos of nothing... no clue who this is but if you take MA seriously enough to send personal FB messages then you're doing it wrong.

Wow, you really hurt someone's feelings! I love that they thought invoking the corpse of Shelton would be the gutcheck you needed. So goofy.

I just learned that Spotify has a bunch of Ningen-Isu albums. Never had any means to check them out before so today is Human Chair day! So far they are living up to expectations. Absolutely sounds like Sabbath with a good bit of quirk thrown into the vat. I wasn't sure where to start so I picked their 99 album 20th Century Funeral Song at random. Loving it so far!

Are you really a try hard if you take things too seriously?

Yeah, I guess he showed me how wrong it is to like MR...

And yeah 'try hard' is such an over-used term - nobody actually thinks they are doing so, and it's completely subjective and usually based on biases of someone else.

I was in a Target parking lot playing Father John Misty's debut album when I read that so yeah, not sure I am trying too hard.

Whenever I see/get hate comments like that, I want more than anything to know exactly what it was I said that triggered them so hard, because I just want to double down and make their heads explode.

Indeed. I am sure whatever it was, I'd love to double down on.

I wish Slough Feg would come anywhere near FL.

Maybe try asking a local promoter to get them to play in Florida.

People from Calgary should be called “Calgaroos”. The airport gift shop would have a great new mascot - little stuffed ‘roo with a cowboy hat :D

Random thing I did just now.

I picked one of the top "Similar Artists" to see how far from the initial band I could get.

I started at Burzum. Then I went to ColdWorld -> Kanashimi -> Nortt -> Elysian Blaze -> Ruins of Beverast -> Disembowelment -> Thergothon -> Evoken -> Indesinence -> Ophis -> Thorr's Hammer -> Burning Witch -> Sunn O))) -> Boris -> Melvins -> Soundgarden -> Black Sabbath -> Dio -> Rainbow -> Thin Lizzy -> Budgie -> Scorpions

Therefore Burzum = Scorpions

Electric Wizard > Black Sabbath > Soundgarden > Quorthon > Jennie Tebler > Lacuna Coil > Tarja > Nightwish

Electric Wizard = Nightwish

Also: Fairyland > Dragonland > Numenor > Summoning > Elffor > Lord Wind > Karl Sanders > Nile > Suffocation

Fairyland = Suffocation

Given the scene in Lords of Chaos where Euro picks on Varg for having a Scorpions patch, that's a little bit poignant.

I remember that was a game we had on the board here years ago. See how far from one band to another it took to get you by going through Similar Artists. There were some wacky chains in there.

Hellhammer -> Sarcófago -> Sepultura -> Soulfly -> Lamb of God -> Shadows Fall -> Killswitch Engage -> Times of Grace -> For Today

Hellhammer = For Today

Also that scene is precisely why I stopped at Scorpions!

I think any major band (that has more than a few similar band recommendations) can eventually be linked back to Black Sabbath.

Cattle Decapitation -> Anaal Nathrakh -> Mistress -> Eyehategod -> Melvins -> Black Sabbath

In Flames -> At The Gates -> Hypocrisy -> Edge of Sanity -> Opeth -> Katatonia -> Paradise Lost -> Type O Negative -> Black Sabbath

Still Remains -> As I Lay Dying -> Austrian Death Machine -> Gwar -> Suicidal Tendencies -> Anthrax -> Megadeth -> Metal Church -> Judas Priest -> Dio -> Black Sabbath

Thergothon -> Disembowelment -> Winter -> Celtic Frost -> Venom -> Motörhead -> Girlschool -> Diamond Head -> Iron Maiden -> Dio -> Black Sabbath

Portal -> Gorguts -> Atheist -> Coroner -> Voivod -> Venom -> Motörhead -> Girlschool -> Diamond Head -> Iron Maiden -> Dio -> Black Sabbath

Well I'm seeing Fates Warning and Queensryche tomorrow - good of an excuse as any to finally brush up on more recent FW stuff which I never got to.

You're seven steps removed from Nickelback.

5) Henri Sorvali was in Finntroll with Brandon Ellis
6) Brandon Ellis was in Arsis with Sam Paulicelli
7) Sam Paulicelli appeared on Devin Townsend's "Empath" album with Chad Kroeger

Here's the Durst-to-LLN steps.

Spoiler: show
1) Fred Durst appeared on Soulfly's s/t with Max Cavalera.
2) Max Cavalera was in Sepultura, whose live drummer in 2013 was Kevin Foley
3) Kevin Foley was the drummer for Abbath in 2015, in 2016 Abbath had guitarist Slimaeth
4) Slimaeth was in Vorkreist with Dave Terror
5) Dave Terror was in Hell Militia with Meyhnach of Mutiilation

Been an occasional observer of that Atmospheric BM channel for a while now and I keep coming to the conclusion what a largely regressive style of music this has become. Usually it's about 5 minutes worth of listenable material that's inanely stretched out to over 40+ minutes of unending boredom and digital retardation. Fuck this shit. Forever.

Yeah, there's about ten similar youtube channels for stoner metal that are all in the same vein.

Probably fair to say that most of the bands that got on those kinda channels would've remained forever obscure otherwise though. The cream rises to the top, etc.

I think the problem is there's just a really low bar for entry. Not hard to rip off Black Sabbath with a fuzz pedal and smack the ride cymbal on every beat, which leads to a million low-inspiration bands who don't really understand how to take the essential Sabbath building blocks and reconfigure them into compelling riffs. Still good shit coming out, though.

yeah. And let's be honest, even when there's a hypothetically high bar for entry (ie tech death), there's still a remarkable amount of shit bands in those genres too

Making good music is harder than it looks!

Yeah I think a lot of metal bands are fans first and inspired second. If you decide you're going to do something and then go looking for inspiration, it's probably not going to be great. At the same time, it's shitty bands playing local shows that keeps a community alive.

Haha that's a great way of putting it. Also beer on tap definitely helps a mediocre band sound better. What are beer goggles for music? Beerphones?

It's by far the most homogenized form of music I'm aware of, and the stuff that gets filtered to YouTube channels tends to be even more samey, because it seems a lot of people just listen to it as background music and are happy for something that just keeps the same atmosphere and doesn't change. Every time I try to explore this particular YouTube niche of the style, nearly every band has repetitive programmed drums and essentially no mixing, so the guitar fizz/fuzz is the most dominant thing and there's hardly a rhythmic element to it. Worse, a large number of them are literally programmed in Guitar Pro and synthesized using RSE, which is completely lifeless.

It's almost startling to go from that background noise to anything with a human element in it.
