I swear to GOD I'm going to make some kind of progress on Sekiro tonight. I haven't really had much isolated time with the game. I've been beating my head against Juzou for days, but only 1 or 2 attempts before giving up. I may refocus on the main missions and double back. Mostly I just need to retrain myself not to FUCKING dodge so much! Gotta block, gotta deflect.

Aaaaaaaand here comes Ubisoft/Massive, fucking with elements of the game that whiny PVP YouTubers cried about but the average player loved. ARs and LMGs are practically worthless now and NPCs are buffed considerably.

Looks like I'm taking a break from Division 2 until they fix it. I guess all those positive reviews of the changes made from the first game were just too much to handle because we're back to fucking shitty and frustrating game design again.

Bought a Switch after a long period of always thinking about it and never pulling the trigger. I know the big Killer App is Breath of the Wild but I'm not exactly rolling in free time, nor am I much of a Zelda fan, so I'm holding off on that one for now. I got Mario Odyssey though, which looked incredible and I've greatly enjoyed every single mainline Mario game so I'm sure I'll love that when I get around to it.

However, the other game I bought was Octopath Traveler, which seemed more up my alley in general and it looks to have been a great choice. I only have a few hours put in so far and I can definitely sense one huge issue that I suspect won't really be addressed, but the parts I like I like a lot so I'm already hooked at the outset. The problem is that it looks like the story is really kinda secondary here, which is generally the exact opposite of why I like RPGs in the first place. It all seemed fine at the start, but when I met my second character I noticed my original protagonist had precisely zero impact on what was happening and was never once acknowledged, and now my party has two completely separate goals on opposite ends of the world map, each marked as "[character] Chapter 2". So now I can only assume that basically you just play through eight completely separate stories at the same time that'll somehow get tied together at the end, but right now it just seems kinda awkward to have a big traveling party of warriors all on separate quests that never talk to each other. Maybe I'll end up wrong, and maybe it'll be well done and I won't care (like the little known SNES gem Live A Live), but right now it's kinda offputting.

However the way the game actually plays is fucking enrapturing. I adore this battle system to pieces. It's similar to the Persona franchise where the goal is to exploit enemies' weaknesses if you don't want to get slapped to death, and what little I do know about the game already is that subclasses become unlocked later on so I'm excited to get to some FFV styled mix-and-matching the jobs. The system of boosting your attacks is immensely satisfying as well. I'm also itching to collect all of the characters just to see what their path abilities all are. I dunno, it's easier for me to ramble on about narrative aspects of games and that seems to be where this one is lacking but trust me this is a lot of fun to play anyway.

That was my problem with Octopath Traveler as well--the gameplay's great, but this is an RPG, and if the story's only just slightly above minimally adequate, I'm not going to be motivated to keep playing.

I felt like the individual stories, for the most part, were interesting enough to keep me engaged (Ha'anit and Ophilia's stories were dreadfully dull though, but the rest were a lot better).

Anyway, who likes some good hitbox porn? 'Cause I do.

I chose Ophilia as my protagonist because I figured it'd be important to have a healer available at the start, and it seems to be paying off because she is without a doubt my best raw damage dealer at the moment (the other two's damage output is absolutely dwarfed by a max boosted Holy Light by a magnitude of three or four). Coming equipped with a holy spell is a lifesaver, and if I'm in an area where enemies aren't vulnerable to light magic she's still useful as a healer and to summon in other allies (which is great in the early game so far when I'm trying to solo the first dungeon with a fuckin' white mage). I went over and got H'aanit and Therion and now I think I'm gonna double back and get Cyrus before just finishing out the party collection clockwise. My only other complaint so far apart from how weird it seems to have eight different stories happening at once with no overlap is that, at least right now, the game is very easy. I'm a Final Fantasy fan so I'm no stranger to easy JRPGs but I haven't used a single item even once at this point and haven't had any need to grind for experience or money. Hell as soon as I got Therion I just immediately looted better equipment and once the other two joined up with him I was able to buy out the entire shop. This isn't necessarily the biggest problem in the world because the combat itself is still a lot of fun but I do think I run the risk of getting bored if the story is meh and the challenge is low.

I shouldn't be speculating like that though, because I'm still enjoying it plenty.

yeah Octopath was fun for a while but I lost interest because of the dullness of the narrative/characters for the most part.

Echoing sentiments of Sekiro being worthy of GOTY. It is astounding on every level. At the tip it's a Souls game, but the whole iceberg is something else entirely.

I'm nearing completion of my second time through and it's just incredible. There is so much depth and complexity in the combat system and all the shit you can do with the Shinobi Prosthetic and all the different movesets that can be applied at any moment, all of which is done without making the game clunky or over-saturated. There's still stuff I'm discovering and unearthing despite tinkering around with all the combat maneuvers and gadgets. The whole deathblow system is a fantastic alternative to the usual drain-a-bosses'-health-bar routine. It is relentlessly hard - I think far and away the most difficult in the series. It took a hot minute to click with the variables at play at any given moment, but damn is it good when it does. Those hitbox gifs Morri posted are beautiful.

Bosses:
Spoiler: show
Isshin, Sword Saint, Demon of Hatred, and Owl can fuck right off/are fantastic fights. Goddamn are those fights hard.

Mini-Bosses:
Spoiler: show
I love how this is a major aspect of the game, what with how lame most mini-boss fights are. Their presence in this game is a reckoning and occasionally insanely hard. You have to be creative, experimental, and always on your guard. The Headless fights are easy once you figure out what to do, but Ashina Elite Jinsuke Saze in the dojo after Ashina enters the final stage was insane. I ultimately just ran around and burned his ass with Okiwana's Flame Vent, which staggers him for a while, until finally putting him in the dirt. Snake Eyes Shirajfugi and Snake Eyes Shirahagi also give me a lot of trouble. That grab attack they do is devastating and pretty hard to dodge if you're keeping the fight close. O'Rin of the Water was another tricky one.

It is the antithesis of most AAA games: quality greatly outweighs style, although there is plenty to go around. Really can't emphasize how awesome this is. I just bought it on a whim and wasn't planning on buying it despite having run through the Souls games a bazillion times, but making the plunge was easily one of the best video game purchases I think I've ever made. I really, really hope FROM churns out at least one DLC package for Sekiro and continues exploring what the Sekiro universe could achieve should it carry over in future installments.

Well it's absolutely fucking murdering sales-wise, so I think FROM will have a fair volume of additional content for it for the next year.

*shakes fist angrily at the heavens*

Lady Butterfly!!!!

I'm sure there's a smarter way but it looks like counter-attack chip damage is my only real hope here. I'm just thankful she only has one health bar I guess. Her one health bar was a lie! The first phase is actually relatively "chill" but I got CLAPPED by her second phase. It feels doable with some practice though. Using charged thrusts against her seems important.

Sekiro definitely feels like the beginning of something. Who knows if it'll be direct sequels or just an evolution of ideas. Bottom line they've struck on something phenomenal with the combat. It can't stop here.

I haven't put as much time into Sekiro as I would have liked, but I'm having a great time with it nonetheless. The combat is so fast, brutal, and precise, and I love it. I'm still adjusting to not being able to dodge roll through everything, though the different types of counters and ways to avoid damage are more than welcome.

I beat the Shinobi Hunter last night (I was stuck on him forever, damn Mikiri counters), as well as buddy on the horse (his name escapes me), who only took a couple of tries. Now I'm on to Juzou, who promptly handed my ass to me when I didn't deflect on time.

Juzou is easy if you allow him to be. I was doing it the hard way for days. If you get frustrated let me know, I don't want to give unsolicited advice.

Katana Zero drops in just over a week! So much hype on my end. If you love pixel art, clashing swords, and bloodbaths maybe check it out.

I only gave him a couple tries last night, so I'm gonna see how it goes tonight. But I'll definitely welcome the advice if I need any help, thanks!

I was looking for some fun, free, mobile games while out doing laundry last night and I am surprised to say I found some!

Catbird: A super cute pixel art pure platformer. You're a Catbird. You flap your ears and fly around! Really great graphics and soundtrack, can't believe it's free.

Ninja Ranger: A love letter to old school Shinobi games. It handles like an old game, think NES titles, but I've played through the first 5 or so levels and it's a satisfying on-the-go ninja fix.

Dan the Man: Super bright, clean graphics. Unbelievably well made for a free game. The controls and variety of moves really impressed me. This game is basically like if Mario did karate and used an AK. So...yeah, it rules. Far heavier on combat than platforming.

Jonpo, you were right about him being easy; I beat him first try last night, haha.

Now that I beat Jouzo, I've run into Lady Butterfly and Seven Ashina Spears, both of whom are kicking my ass. That said, every time I die to them I never feel the game is at fault, it's always something that I could have done better.
Spoiler: show
Also, I should've heeded the warning about the headless. That was a wake up call for sure!

Lady Butterfly seems so simple to me. I just have to get through her first phase without taking any damage. The internet told me I should go beat other bosses first. I really got focused on Hirata, haven't even beaten the chained Ogre yet.

Hate to give up on Lady Butterfly but I just might double-back for her later. I'm obsessed with her whole vibe and the way she attacks. I want to be teammates lol.

My first go around with her I got her first phase down like nothing. I must have fought her about 10 times after that, and I didn't make it to second phase once, so I'm doing something wrong. I think there's another way to go where I'm at, so I'm gonna try that instead of bashing my head (unsuccessfully) against two bosses.

The Chained Ogre was tricky for me, his attacks track weird sometimes which always caught me off guard. How much time do you have in this so far? I'm at around 10 hours which I think is pretty decent.

I honestly have no idea! I'm probably somewhere between 8-15 hours. I spent at least 2 hours just farming skill points in Hirata. That whole area around the second uhhhh "bonfire" is just too juicy.

I've heard you can cheese the Ogre with flame vent. I'm gonna try to chop him down the old fashioned way a time or two and if that goes bad he's getting burned to a crisp. At this point I just want to beat an actual boss lol. I was so hung up on Juzou I got myopic. I may get a few hours in tonight. I realize Ogre isn't an actual boss. Mini boss fog wall.

I think they gave every enemy much better tracking intentionally. It's to break our dodge roll addiction from previous titles. I'm STILL struggling with that.

I've been playing Sekiro, and when I get frustrated I pop in Bloodborne. I lost my BB save file, so I just finished that game again after about 8~ hours.

Sekiro I'm stuck at Lady Butterfly, and I just beat the Blazing Bull. I love it, but I keep dodging and getting wrecked.

I beat Sekiro NG+ the other day.

In NG+, there's a little twist at the start; Kuro asks about the charm you are carrying, and you have the option to either keep it, or give it back. Kuro says the charm has protected Wolf and saved him from additional hardship, and he wants to avoid you suffering any further. So basically, if you insist and give it back, you make the game much harder. (You do get one chance to retrieve the charm later, and after that you can't give it away again)

I tried that early in NG+.... lots of regrets. I stubbornly clung to this mode until (mid game boss)
Spoiler: show
Guardian Ape
, but the fight after that just broke me. I couldn't make it to phase 2 and I gave up, got the charm back, and then it was mostly smooth sailing. Last boss was still tough, though, but I can't imagine how brutal it'd be without the charm.

What does the charm do, then? Well, be advised, if you ever try NG+:
- It makes you take "chip" damage from imperfect deflections. And by chip I don't mean 10% or whatever. Feels more like 30-50%. You take serious damage every time you don't have a frame-perfect deflection. Yeah....
- This also applies to the Umbrella prosthetic, you take damage through it now unless you "deflect" (spin it) at the right timing, making it.... kinda useless as a "tanking" prosthetic.
- Enemies and bosses do more damage. For example, the Chained Ogre's grab attack will insta-OHKO at full health.
- Enemies and bosses have more health. I think 30% more. That's a LOT, believe me.

Apparently if you ring the Demon Bell you also make enemies do more damage/have more HP and it stacks with the Charmless mode. Nope nope nope nope NOPE

Sekiro in a nutshell ;)

If you play it like Bloodborne you'll get rekt. Deflect, deflect, and stay aggressive, at all times. For the bull, firecrackers help.

Over the weekend, I got 5 more games. One of them a rare gem I don't recall ever seeing in real life.

Dangerous Driving for PS4. Built by Three Fields Entertainment, risen from the ashes of Criterion after they were absorbed and destroyed by EA. EA did this, essentially, to remove the Burnout franchise from the world of gaming so there would be no competition for grossly inferior racer, Need for Speed. Dangerous Driving is as close to Burnout as we'll get. It's imperfect, not as robust as classic Burnout (especially Burnout Revenge, the peak of the franchise), and not quite as visceral, but aside from some hiccups and the "budget Burnout" element of the game, I'm loving it. I'm just so happy to have even this much Burnout again. If you were a fan of Burnout and want that kind of arcade racer back, I suggest supporting this. The physical version can only be purchased online apparently and includes Danger Zone 2, which is a stand-alone game built around the old Burnout crash courses. I do miss the Traffic Attack mode, however. Still don't have that.

The following were found at an antique show/flea market over the weekend:
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire for Playstation (the original). Complete and in the tall box. Map included.
The Chessmaster 3D for Playstation (original). Complete and in the tall box.
1943 for NES. Hilariously included a photocopy of the original manual. This was because this copy of the game was from a mom & pop video rental store.
Tetris for the NES. The original Tetris. The unlicensed Tengen version. It's in great shape and plays pretty well. I don't recall ever seeing this in real life. It was just randomly in a box of NES games at the flea market. The guy was asking for $65 for it. I asked him if he could give me a better deal which included 1943. He gave me both for $60. This is the most I've paid for an old NES game--and well below the high prices greedy sellers attempt to garner online.

I like that fight, though in NG+ charmless it was insanely hard and almost broke me. Try this if you struggle:

Spoiler: show
In phase 1:
Oil + Okinaga flame vent, right at the start; it will not only set Burn status (+ set your own sword on fire briefly), you will get tons of free hits. When the fire repeats and he recovers, throw another oil and do it again. He should be almost dead after that. If you used an Ako's Sugar, he might even be dead.

If you have emblems left, you can also do that at the start of phase 2, but in this phase case I prefer the Spear prosthetic, so when you deflect his rage combo that finishes with a long downward slash, you should get a special animation that brings the severed neck close to you... hit r2 + r2 and you will pull out the parasite, doing massive damage.

Also fun fact: Divine Confetti do a 25% damage boost to all enemies (bigger on "apparition" types). In NG+, you will be swimming in money, so you can just load up on hundreds of those for constant buffing. :)

MK11 comes out in less than a week, which means I'm primed for a reunion with Big Daddy Shao Kahn.

Guardian Ape is the least fun fight so far. Maybe I'll figure out a better way to win on NG+ but running in circles was not entertaining.

I'll say this: the thing is much more intimidating than it is dangerous. Have faith in yourself and they will be made easy. Also, during the second phase, sprint past it when it does the AoE thing. Other than that, don't be running around him (unless it does the perilous grab attack). It may be scary to deflect his swings but it can be done. Especially during the second phase: any time you deflect the charged vertical overhead slash he does, it will collapse and give you a window to combo it.

Spoiler: show
For the re-match, with 2 of them, I usually just chuck my gouging top shurikens at the Sasquatch and once it's down handle the Headless Ape as I would normally

Also, is anyone else finding the combat in this game some of the most fun and unique gameplay ever? The clashing and executing is just all so satisfying and there really isn't any other game that has pulled off this kind of thing ever. It's like FromSoft created their own brand new genre of hack & slash, and I hope they make more titles with this kinda combat (and I need my DLC ASAP if we ever get one)

Aye it's glorious.

I am now fantasizing (and setting myself up for disappointment, I'm sure) that Star Wars Fallen Order has lightsaber combat in this vein. And also exploration, with the grappling hook traversal being replaced with Jedi leaps, and shinobi tools being replaced with various Force powers...

(Let me dream, okay)

*drools*

Yeah, that sounds utterly fucking awesome, particularly because lightsabers are meant to be singularly lethal weapons and the deathblow system really lends itself to that kind of gravitas. It's certainly better than bonking enemies with the thing until their lifebar drops to zero, like you usually do in most games where you play as a Jedi or a Sith.

I still haven't had the chance to play Sekiro, but I'm aching to do so. Everything about it sounds delightful.

Should I even bother raving about Katana Zero? Or am I "the boy who cried game"?

It's a shocking value at $15. I hate to compare another game to Hotline Miami but it's undeniable. Not in the gameplay like Ape Out. This time it's the aesthetics and trippy storytelling. The gameplay is adrenaline fueled assassination platforming. You're a samurai who can control time and reflect bullets with your sword. You die very easily however.

It's $15 bucks y'all. Crazy.

I beat Katana Zero in about 5 hours. So it's not a lengthy experience, but there are clearly a TON of secrets that I missed. The game gives you a lot of fun choices in dialogue options, I assume that will also change how the story or ending plays out, possibly. It's a choose-your-own-adventure, samurai assassin, time travel yarn. Same ol' story. I expect a similar level of replay value to Hotline Miami, because the game just plain FEELS great.

I haven't fired up Sekiro since the new patch, curious to see if I notice any difference. I'm likely still too early into the game to notice much difference.

Anyone play MK 11 yet? I was considering buying it, and it has been getting great reviews by critics. But it's being review-bombed on Metacritic right now. People are apparently complaining about micro-transactions and "SJW propaganda".

One of the characters goes back in time and ends slavery. Apparently that's SJW propaganda and anti-white rhetoric. Or so the internet is telling me. :ugh: Oh yeah and they redesigned some female characters (less tit-ninja) and that's..... bad.... because reasons... I guess...

The micro-transaction situation is shitty though. You can unlock everything in game by just playing the game and not buying anything in the store, but it will take unholy amounts of time to do so. Apparently lots of rng as well.
