Typically search the Internet for guitar pedals I am able to narrow down my options pretty well but the variety of reverb pedals out there is so overwhelming that I don't really know how to make cuts from my list without personally testing them. Unfortunately my local music stores don't carry any beyond the Boss model. Since I have never used reverb outside of what comes with my amp I am hoping to judge what I may need based on others' experience.

My first issue is being unable to figure out whether I want one of those multi-type general pedals (Boss, MXR, Hall of Fame) or one of the more focused pedals by someone like Earthquaker or Catalinbread.
I play mostly black metal and doom metal. Having never used reverb in a pedal before, I am not sure what style of reverb is most appropriate for the music I play, though Catalinbread's Talisman looks compelling, or whether I would want more options that a specific type of reverb pedal like that would be able to provide.

I actually use the delay function on an Old Blood Noise Endeavor “Dark Star” pedal for my reverb - sounds great, has a slightly darker, tripped out tone. I also really liked DigiTech’s Polara for a more spacey reverb. The classic Danelectro Holy Grail is good just don’t get the nano.

I also like a good rack mount reverb unit. Got an Ibanez SDR1000 off eBay for fifty bucks and it’s
versatile as hell and sounds amazing.

Never heard of the first one, I'll look into those. Thank you. I think I saw the Holy Grail at one of my local stores, but I get excited about pedals with more knobs so I did not spend much time looking at it. Maybe I'll try it out next time I stop in.

The big problem I have with watching reverb demos on Youtube or something is that they are always testing the pedals with a clean tone. I want to make sure if I get a pedal it can handle distortion well enough.

If you like a lot of knobs and more versatility the Strymon Blue/Big Sky is probably the way to go. Don’t have one myself but have played with a friends and it’s a seriously powerful box.

And yeah I hear you on the demos with no distortion. This is why I like the Dark Star so much, it interacts with distortion in a great way.

Cheap, cheerful and really good. I use it for subtle stuff all the way to big ol cathedral-ish drone. Great with distortion too.

Honestly though, it's not something worth really worth overthinking. Any big name brand will get you a fairly solid reverb pedal which'll have what you're looking for.

Oh that Blue Sky looks fun. I'll have to figure out how much I care about reverb and decide whether to spend that much or go with the Boss or TC pedal.

Thank you both!
