I just came home and found this posted everywhere: https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-europe-47941794

This is absolutely horrid to witness. One of the world's best known and loved monuments might just be defaced forever beyond repair.
This hits me even harder as back in 1997 I saw the same thing occur to the Chapel of the holy shroud in my hometown (Turin).

Here is the demonstration of why I hate European nationalism. This building is on fire due to lack of proper renovation, and if all the funds collected for hating foreigners had been invested into this historical icon it would not suffer this fate. That's why all European nationalist bullshit is a fraud, nobody cares about European history and tradition, they only care about xenophobia. Fuck those people. 850 years of history pretty much gone. Throw Le Pen in it before the fire is extinguished.

Just saw the main spire collapse....what a shame. Whatever the extent of the damage turns out to be, and it seems to be very extensive, they're obviously going to rebuild it. The stone core of the structure will still be there to build upon. But much seems to have been lost.

What a terrible sight. I really hope that most of this historic monument will keep standing and that no one got hurt during this fire.

Also, Varg posted a video on his channel on some stupid topic, and OF COURSE that he had to offer condolences to, and I quote, "the Gallic people, who had their sacred sites burned or in other ways destroyed by the Christians."

Right. A piece of history is being destroyed, and all you're saying is "well, that's what you get - your ancestors burnt down ancient Gallic temples". One would think that maybe those 15 years in prison taught him something, but it seems like I was a helpless optimist. What a fucking asshole.

Shame about those burned down Gallic temples no historian has ever heard of, I'm sure they were a tragic loss in Varg's imagination.

Well, obviously contemporary historians would cover something like that up. Varg is always one step ahead!

The edgy twelve-year-olds sure seem to be out in full force on my Facebook feed. No wait, those are grown ass men.

An absolute tragedy, if only for the artistic and architectural significance. It's painful to watch history burn.

They said there were plenty of priceless artworks in there too... maybe people will now have to live with digital versions if none or many were not salvaged. The edgy facebookians are strong on a Varg stream it seems.

This had nothing to do with nationalism, and it also probably had nothing to do with cost-cutting contractors. It was likely just an accident; a spark from a grinder, or an electrical issue, or something of that sort; it sadly happens during renovations of old buildings all the time. It doesn't help in this case that the roof of the cathedral was made up of tens of thousands of old, dry timber, and the building had been falling into disrepair for some time, too. It's tragic, but also a reminder that old buildings don't last forever and can easily be destroyed. Let's not turn this thread into another argument about nationalism or even speculation about poor contractors (at least until an investigation is thoroughly conducted and conclusions are made).

On that note, it seems like the lower levels of the cathedral have held up. Not only are the walls intact, but the rose windows might be OK. This is the northern one, which was in the same direction that the spire toppled: https://i.redd.it/nvvsojcrhks21.jpg

I am curious how they will rebuild the roof. Are they gonna go with the original plan - which means loads of wood - or will they try to make it lighter and more fire proof and use something like stainless steel? Or is it gonna be something in the middle, like less timber but higher quality? This is what it looked like before: https://i.imgur.com/gBn2q0J.jpg

Seeing the main rose windows still standing was a huge relief. Those are usually among the first things to go when flames get out of control.

Let's hope the massive heat hasn't weakened the basic structure too severely. If the walls are still solid, reconstruction and restoration become a very real possibility.

Incredible shame to see this happen, but it's just one of those things, I guess. In fact I've found it's very rare to see a very old building such as this that hasn't suffered major damage and renovations over the years, typically due to fire. It's very lucky that all of the stone structure is largely intact, as are the rose windows, and very dumb luck that they already removed the twelve statues of the apostles from around the spire just last week.

It's very tragic and gut-wrenching to watch that beautiful building burn, but it's just a thing, and thankfully no one died. It will be rebuilt. Actually, I'm somewhat excited to follow the process of the reconstruction, as I'm sure it will take many years but will result in something wonderful.

Don't be sad it's gone (which, it isn't, just really badly damaged)- be happy for the time it existed. I mean, shit- 100 years war, bubonic plague, French Revolution, Napoleon, WWI and WWII. Frankly, it's pretty remarkable we all got to see it go the way it did, considering how many generations of people didn't see anything happen to it. I was eating breakfast at a diner yesterday watching that spire burn. That's just not something you see every day.

This reminds me of an interview with (the 41st best) British stand-up comedian Stewart Lee, relating a gig in Hannover, where he, on the drive to the venue, was told by one of the promoters in a very dead-pan manner that "this is the beautiful historic district of Hannover - of which there's nothing left, because your people bombed it all."

Also, though it may not relate to the actual causes of the fire, this is, in my opinion, the absolute and undeniable truth.

Edit: Before anyone gets any nasty ideas, I'll make it clear that I don't want to debate the moral nature of Allied aerial warfare against the German Reich during the 2nd World War, and will hunt down and shank anyone who'd use my post as an entryway to revanchist diatribes.

Tradegy to see something that old go down in flames absolutely like that. I guess it was bound to happen eventually however.

It's fun seeing so much Burzum on faceache !

On a serious note - looks like most of the really irreplaceable stuff (the relics, art, organ, windows) are safe for now. With the perfumers and handbag makers throwing money at it, the Vatican offering specialists from Rome and their museums, the stonemasons at Yorkminster looking for work - it's looking good and hopeful that it'll be put back together.

Just need Macron to roll a few sixes and not balls it all up with his foot-in-mouth political pronouncements.

The French plan to rebuild the Cathedral to its original design, which is awesome... except that France lacks the lumber to get it done: https://beta.ctvnews.ca/national/world/ ... 0.amp.html
On the bright side, that could necessitate a great unifying project for the Christian world. Canada has lumber, Brazil has lumber, Russia has lumber; let’s all help out folks

I have a feeling they'll do what was done when part of Chartres Cathedral's roof burnt in the 1800s, and replace it with a metal framework:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... de_Fer.jpg

Or, however, they could do what was done with Bourges Cathedral, and go with a lightweight timber frame framework:
https://journals.openedition.org/racf/d ... all480.jpg

They'll probably still keep the lead sheets for the roof itself, however.

I read in the news that there had actually been two calls to the fire brigade. The first time they showed up, they didn't find any sign of a fire, so they left. 20 minutes later, they're back. Makes you wonder if the fire started in some obscure place not easily accessible.

Thread necro I know - but after 15 months, the French authorities have finally settled on how to rebuild the damaged parts of the cathedral - that is, exactly how it was, with no Hadid / Foster-style steel & concrete-ing all over the place.

It might warm the hearts of a few here to know that they're using traditional craftsmen to make the bits and pieces to go into the restoration - it's not all being 3D printed in China or whatever.

And even with traditional methods it'll probably finish before 2WTC.

Holy crap - the Nantes Cathedral fire is suspected arson already: https://www.withinnigeria.com/2020/07/1 ... edral/amp/
At least the damage is considerably less severe than at Notre Dame on a structural level, though the inside is quite ravaged.
