Lowest Creature - Sacrilegious Pain Crossover Thrash, like Power Trip
Elegiac - Thirst For Revenge Pagan Black, by far their best album
Ossuaire - Premiers Chants Quebec Black Metal with some Mgła and Finnish BM influence

Stellar Master Elite - Hologram Temple
This is my first exposure to this band and I'm really liking what I'm hearing. It's mostly mid-paced Black/Death/Doom Metal that branches out from time to time, but places an emphasis on a repetitive cultish atmosphere. Many of the lyrics are kind of lame and cliched, but after hearing one of the songs start with a voice sample about DMT, I'm thinking the band doesn't take themselves that seriously and are going for satire at times.

Mortals' Path - Feast of Maggots
Old School Death Metal with EXTREMELY heavy production. It's a breath of fresh air to have some quality OSDM song writing but with a focus on having the music so fucking loud it crushes your lungs. While I can appreciate what a lot of throwback Death Metal bands are going for when they create albums with atmospheric production, many times I feel like something is lost in translation and the music itself suffers. Mortals' Path does not have this issue. Here we have a band that just puts together straight up Death Metal then plays it loud and hard. While I know many might be turned off by such heavy production, I feel like the band is basically trying to make it feel like they are in the room with you blasting away.

Riot City's "Burn the Night" SHREDS. It might have just become my current #1. Traditional heavy metal.

This is not bad. I came because the band name reminded me of Thorns. Music isn't quite that but I liked it. Will check out some more.

Some of the stuff I've been listening to so far this year:

Idle Hands - Mana
Already a full thread about this record on the main page.

None - Damp Chill Of Life
Really digging this DSBM project. Loved the record that came out a year ago, and I might like this one even more.

Traveler - Traveler
Canadian classic heavy metal. Canada seems to be thriving with bands of this style.

At first I wasn't really fucking with the new Rotting Christ, but it's grown on me a lot. I still think a lot of it is the same, but I dig it.

Already mentioned Wormwitch and Veldes in previous posts.

There are so many awesome releases this year already...

Arch/Matheos - Winter Ethereal
Avantasia - Moonglow
Autumn - Stacked Smoke
Possessed - Revelations Of Oblivion
Paragon - Controlled Demolition
Idle Hands - Mana
Sanhedrin - The Poisoner
Devil Master - Satan Spits On Children Of Light
Orion Child - Continuum Fracture (only heard a few songs but sounded killer)

And still got the new Slough Feg and more to look forward to.

The idea of a traditional metal band with Riot placed so prominently in their name is iffy to me but the album itself is decent enough.

The new Paladin is definitely going to be in my top power metal albums of 2019. Glad to see someone finally picked up Noble Beast's torch.

Paladin record isn't bad, but vocals are too generic.

My favorites right now are Vanum, Rotting Christ, Saor, and Kampfar.

The new Khaos Labyrinth and Numenorean are good too but like B-tier. I enjoy them as well but they have their issues.

Yeah, Vanum did another solid release and that artwork is very powerful.

Forgotten paths is great, a bit too short imo. Then I still can't forget the incredible drums performance of Lunn in Aura, definitely superior to the other Saor drummers.

Man, you guys are kicking my ass. I know it's just a demo but if you like Profanatica and Thy Feeble Saviour, check out the Virgin Bleeds demo. Just so dirty and vile...other than that, I liked the new Candlemass and Rotting Christ records ok. Really anticipating the new Nocturnus album.

Sathamel - Horror Vacui

The first full length album from Sathamel has quickly vaulted to the front of my AOTY list. The band has been through some rocky periods and controversy getting it out, but they managed to release an absolute banger of Black/Death Metal. The closest similarities are to Behemoth, but Sathamel does a great job of creating their own sound and seem to be a little more Death oriented. The album has awesome riffing, drumming, and is full of great hooks. The vocal performance from frontman Kruk is awe inspiring. He mainly sticks to a powerful but coherent Death Metal style, but he also pulls out some incredible Black Metal shrieks as well.

That Paladin album is great. Most likely a top 10 album for this year. Have been waiting for it to drop ever since I first heard the single. Wasn't disappointed!

I'm listening to Spotted horse by Glassing, a kind of post-hardcore/blacklgaze, excellent modern stuff.

the new krypts album is unsurprisingly kicking all kinds of ass (sort of atmosphericish death metal for those not in the know)

I haven't heard anyone talking about the new Blazon Stone album, but, predictably, it is very good! Not sure that it tops Down in the Dark, but anyone that is a fan will like this one.

Bit of a late discovery for me as this was released in January, but holy shit I can't sit on this or keep it to myself - it's impressive stuff. Those of you in the know with this guy, Swartadauþuz will know his output is usually pretty high quality, I myself was impressed mostly with Azelisassath, but this record is another ghastly beast altogether of grim, crushing death metal.

Musmahhu - Reign of The Odious

Amazing art and goddamn that logo is fucking boss.

Yeah, that Musmahhu album is pretty good. I'll have to listen to it a few more times but I was impressed with it.

Yeah Mikey it's a bit of a beast, with enough clarity in the production to keep it nice and brutal, without losing anything in it's sinister edge. Good shit.

Paladin's debut is good stuff. Not sure if it's worthy of an end-of-year list, but it's good.

The Noble Beast comparisons didn't appeal to me (I always found them annoying and egregious), but I actually like Paladin. Sounds much more up my alley for classic early 00s power metal. Just shredding fun.

Maybe was mentioned already, but Misþyrming's Algleymi is fucking incredible. Absolutely top notch melodies, really beautiful. Can someone tell me how the fuck to pronounce Misþyrming?

No problem mate. We all went through that when the debut came around, and it was an actual discussion back then. :D And you're right in saying that Algleymi is great. In fact it went as far as changing my opinion about the band entirely. I had listened to Songvar several times before and even saw them perform it live but I was never fully convinced about it, but now I can backtrack and find it an enjoyable listen thanks to their new album. Go figure!

Vultures Vengeance - The Knightlore. This is already more than likely the best record of the year for me, though I'm keeping things open for Slough Feg - New Organon.

In any case, ever since hearing their first EP in 2016, "Where the Time Dwelt In", Vultures Vengeance were one to watch. Said EP was on constant rotation for a solid year and a half in these parts. "Lyrids: Warning from the Reign of the Untold" in 2018 was a very worthy followup EP, and made it more than clear the the debut full-length would not disappoint, and it most certainly does not.

Arch / Matheos - Winter Ethereal

Saw the good reviews and decided to finally listen to it. At first I didn't like it, thought the riffs had no definition, all songs sounded like weird prog ballads, etc. But then next thing I knew it was all stuck in my head and now it's already one of my most-played 2019 albums. John Arch is just so enchanting...

Mystik (SWE)'s self-titled is badass speed metal in the old German style, with the Antichrist drummer (who's the only guy in the band). Digging it a lot.

Was also not that blown away by the first album but I did enjoy it. Algleymi, on the other hand, hit me instantly. Strong contender for my black metal AOTY right now. Funereal Presence is still in contention though.

Well gave the new Consummation album a spin and it is excellent. Pretty much has everything I want to hear, aggression, atmosphere, can be both ugly and beautiful all at once. Very impressed.
