Septicflesh - Sangreal
This is probably my favorite song from their removing-the-space-from-their-name-for-some-dumb-reason era.

Slough Feg - Headhunter

Unlike a lot of my favorites this year (Avantasia, Arch Matheos), this is not even 40 minutes long, so I've just been playing it on repeat like an insane person. Spellbinding guitars and their usual quirky structures make it a shitload of fun.

Beherit - At the Devil's Studio 1990

Sounds like it was recorded with a kitchen sink disposal thing going at full blast. So fucking filthy and muddy. Vocalist sounds like a fucking rabid animal. Pretty crazy shit and maybe not more than an early stab, unrefined, but it's got a charm to it.

Honestly that might be one of the best things about short albums. Not only can you can fit listening to the whole thing more easily into a busy day, you can listen to them more times in a shorter timespan and they're more... approachable, I guess. I'm not always in the mood to go for an hour plus of material, it's kind of daunting at times, but something like 25 minutes? (Thinking of KIDS SEE GHOSTS here.) I'll happily play it twice.

Baroness - Gold and Grey

This is certainly much better than their last long album, Yellow and Green, and it's better than Purple honestly. Really damn good.

Hmh, I don't know. This album frustrates me. I like how it's one flowing experience with all the different cool weird intermezzo's linking the bigger songs together, but those bigger songs aren't that special for the most part. There's a curious lack of hooks and focus. So far Purple ranks much higher for me, and so does Yellow and Green. Going to give it more chances though.

Also listening to Baroness - Gold and Grey.

Satyricon - Blessed from Below

I decided to check out more obscure Satyricon material from their EPs and this stuck out to me. It starts of like a boring electronic pop song, but it really transforms towards the end to this ambient music that reminded my of the Iljdarn ambient albums. I'm not surprised to find that Snorre Ruch was involved with this track. Very unique in their discography.

Leonard Cohen - Avalanche

yes, because Ghost covered it :)

longer story:
Spoiler: show
last week I slipped Prequelle on and went to shower. Avalanche was on when I got out (no jokes about shower length please :p), and for the first time it struck me. I went and got out the LC cd that a friend had given me ages ago as "it's a classic album and every home should have one". I didn't like the album then, and I still don't like it now. some songs are truly annoying. sorry LC fans. but Avalanche is so good I'm thinking of getting the lyrics tattooed...

Well I'm a huge Leonard Cohen fan and I hate Ghost, so I guess we can't relate on that, but if you love the song then you should also check out Nick Cave's cover of it. Really fucking good.

For someone who's elder siblings decided that the movie The Day After would be awesome to show to a five-year old in the late 1980s, this is one of the most awesome songs ever:

I was trying to remember what metal band covered "Nights in White Satin" and fuck how stupid was that train of thought, what other band besides The Vision Bleak could have covered that song?

Beherit - Sadomatic Rites

There's something truly fascinating about this album. The production is crazy, like they recorded it underwater, and the writing is so threadbare and simple that nothing shines through but this evil, wicked feeling they wanted to evoke. It's hypnotic and entrancing. The juvenile nature of it gives it a sort of purity that other bands lose out on eventually.

The entire album is just perfect and dare I say atmospheric; I don't think I've ever heard any more thrash that actually sounds as evil.

NP: Cryptopsy - Abigor

Not quite as overwhelming as None So Vile but it's still very good. Filthy, deranged death metal here...

Bolt Thrower - Lost Souls Domain

You can see the devastated battlefields of the 41st millennium when you listen to this record. The grind of war machines, the explosions of bolt guns and missiles coming in, people being melted with plasma guns, screams of death. This record is oppressively heavy.
