I enjoy me some Meat Loaf and Andrew W.K. and spiffy special versions of Final Fantasy boss themes, but for the life of me I don't know where to look for similar stuff.

That's where you come in, M-A. Reveal to me a world beyond my imagining!

Savatage, obviously :) start with Gutter Ballet and work your way chronologically...

That Final Fantasy thing, isn't that exactly what Galneryus are doing?

I've already blown through Savatage's stuff. Didn't care for most of it, except for the excellent Hall of the Mountain King, but I like where your head's at.

Not necessarily--Galneryus use keyboards typically for intros and outros, whereas I'm looking for constant counterpoints or accompanying melodies underscoring the bass lines or lead guitar.

mmhm, if you like Meatloaf but not Savatage I'm not sure I know what you mean... :/

Kamelot have that thing you mention, with a piano underscoring the riffs, on some songs, but I'm not a fan to give you titles... sorry :(

Timo Tolkki does it too, every now and then. again, not a fan...

Trans-Siberian Orchestra, maybe? sort of Savatage by a a different name (and with more singers) (and added cheese)...

Angra or Viper with Andre Matos? "moonlight" or "make believe"/"deep blue"?

I'm lost :/

I meant I just didn't like the melodies and such Savatage wrote on a lot of their songs, not necessarily the structure or general idea of Savatage as a whole. :V

I take it you've been through Deep Purple and Uriah Heep already?

Avantasia perhaps? First couple albums have some serious Meat Loafian passages. The post-Scarecrow records probably have a few songs that you'd dig like "The Watchmakers Dream".

Deep Purple, yes. Uriah Heep, nope. I'll take a look.

I was gonna be an ass and make a post dripping with sarcasm, but I'll refrain. I'm very familiar with Avantasia, and yes, those Meat Loaf-y songs Tobi writes are exactly in the vein of what I'm huntin' for.

Finding good keyboard-heavy bands is alot of guessing and hoping. I wish more modern bands would be willing to include 70s-style keyboards in their music. That one song by Falconer, "Busted to the Floor," comes to mind, but even that does not keep keyboards throughout the whole song.

Atomic Rooster and Uriah Heep are essential. Kansas is an obvious one that too many can easily forget about along with Styx's "The Grand Illusion." Europe is worth checking out too!

swan christy wrote all their songs on the piano, and then added the metal onto them... https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... CE66068B68

personally I don't like them past the demo stage, but that's mostly because the production and musicianship (apart from the prodigious piano player) are poor :/

they're also heavily influenced by savatage, so...

(...)

Spoiler: show
Kansas are great, and I really love Europe, but I don't think they are what you're looking for. and I lolled at the "LP, the US pressing" bit :D

Oh hell yes. Kansas is one of the best bands of all fuckin' time.

Janick Gers' old band White Spirit is tight too. They had a full-time keyboard player who slammed the shit out of his organ and he's pretty prominent. It's less Brrrrrrrroadway and more early metal but it's great stuff.

Anti-Depressive Delivery have all three of their albums loaded with keyboards. Their debut has more metal to it (and I hear a FNM influence), while their second and third albums mostly worship progressive rock.

Hammers of Misfortune, specifically 17th Street.

From The Locust Years:

From Church of Broken Glass:

If any of these tick boxes, just listen to their discography. The First LP is more doom-oriented. Generally speaking, however, the discography is rife with piano, hammond B-3, and fantastic songwriting, composition and musicianship.
