I'm fairly certain they gave Farrell a bag of coke and told him to go wild, and that was the full extent of the directorial effort concerning him.

Get Out.
Third time I've seen it all the way through and each time I seem to notice more than the previous time. Very good film.

Saw Michael Jai White was hosting a boxing show down in Saffer.
On another note, is all his acting as mechanical as in the couple films I've seen him in? Some I can remember are Cops & Robbers, SWAT...

Yes and no. He's a very rigid actor because he was first used only as a "hired muscle" type, but he has enough charisma to warrant some better roles. He's often miscast and should be an action star all out.

Finally got around to watching Swiss Army Man. I was in stitches during a whole bunch of scenes. The whole time I couldn't help but think "who the fuck paid for this production?" As others have said it was also pretty touching at times. I also liked
Spoiler: show
The sort of twist ending. My friend and I thought the whole thing was Paul Dano either in a coma or just experiencing the whole thing during his dying moments either just after his suicide attempt or during the death process itself, as like a dying sort of self-therapy. But then, nah, he's just a creepy stalker who lived in the woods just behind his victim's house and hung out with a corpse that actually did have weird corpse superpowers.

Weird as fuck but absolutely worth a watch.

Swiss Army Man is what I use as proof to people who claim there are no original movies made anymore. So good. But yeah, my friend and I after we saw it had a similar reaction - "who the fuck made this???" in a good way.

I watched Threads. Twice, and the second time was an unspeakably suffocating experience. It deals with the fragility of human society, of global supply chains head on, and never relented for a moment after the nuclear bomb drops. I don't think I'll watch it a third time. I don't plan to become suicidal. But it is an important film about the toll nuclear warfare (and war in general) takes on the daily lives of normal people. Would force the world leaders to watch this and Come and See, to be honest.

Maybe he should get a better agent? One who understands this? Now I'm at a loss if seeking Android Cop would be worth the effort, or good ol' Robocop will do the trick for me.

I think he's fine just taking whatever gigs he can get and producing indie fare. Steady work is more important to some than good work.

Last night I watched Brian Yuzna's Society and I urge anybody into 80s cult flicks to give it a look. It's not anywhere near as good as Re-Animator but it's better, IMO, than From Beyond.

Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal - Big budget fantasy flick from the East that really has some horribly laughable CGI. It actually unfolds like a cheap game. The plotline was well executed nonetheless. Snow white in a different dimension.
Tomb Invader - This a low even for The Asylum. Cheesy with cardboard takes, I was wondering who they even make this stuff for. People who genuinely enjoy Z grade stuff? I was not even disappointed.

very late to the party, watched captain marvel and quite liked it... standalone movies in the marvel uni are rare. nothing stellar, but not a bad pop corn movie. laughed my a** off at the altavista and "recording loading" scenes :D

If you haven't seen Black Dynamite yet, you're in for a helluva treat. One of the best parodies this century, easily.

Wiener-Dog was an interesting, bleak, hilarious experience. Some of the funniest shit I've ever seen in a movie is in here, which is weird because honestly I didn't like it all that much.

Poor Danny DeVito.

Saw Midsommar last night after drinking an assortment of different fancy beers with friends beforehand, and so my recollection of it is somewhat akin to a bizarre surrealistic nightmare. Very slow-burning horror - good character development that kind of gradually slides into the horror as it goes on. As with all my favorite horror films the best moments are the little ones that sort of hit you quick and disappear; just little odd things that make you go "well that's fucked," and then they build on one another. Very uncomfortable mood. It ended kind of abruptly, and I think the old trope of "oh look at how weird these foreigners are" is an odd one to still do today, but the craftsmanship was impeccable.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 - that was actually pretty funny, no emotive shit or drama, just a bunch of fast-paced action and clever jokes
Commando - fun 80's carnage with Arnie
Punisher Warzone - for a punisher movie, that was weirdly lacking on action. Surprisingly, the most interesting aspect of the movie was Frank's guilty and his existential crisis after killing an innocent. The movie was decent overall
Savage Streets - terrible 80's exploitation with Linda Blair. Could have been an OK movie, but who the fuck thought that mixing a brutal rape and revenge plot with high school teen "drama" was a good idea? Contains some of the most embarrassing scenes on the annals of cinema, my favorite is the one were the girls are reading some male porn magazine and seems to imply that Kurt Russel's cock is massive

Midsommar was a masterpiece and one of the best break-up films in existence. Easily
My favourite film of the year thus far.

Just finished Mad Max: Fury Road.

Shit was an orgasmic masterpiece. Greatest road trip movie of all time?! I watched the first 20 minutes and was like "yeah okay cool" but then I realized exactly what I was seeing, and it just totally clicked. What a fucking ride.

At one point I started to think the entire movie would be a continuous action scene, but after over an hour they did stop and slow down for a while. It's funny, I loved it for a completely different reason than I usually love movies for, I didn't really care much for the story or characters, the movie just nailed me to the wall because it just kept going and going without getting boring at any point.

Need for Speed was surprisingly fun for a dumb (so, so very dumb) street racing movie. It's got a reputation as a bad Fast and Furious clone, but I enjoyed it more than the 3 F&F movies I've seen. Then again the story's often the least important thing in a movie for me, I'm just here for cool cars and vroom vrooms.

I think Spider-Man: Far From Home is the first movie ever made where the mid-credit scene is bigger than the actual movie.

For all the ballyhoo that surrounded Fifty Shades of Grey, it is rather a trite film, with Christian being so cardboard in an effort to portray a cold and indifferent Mr Grey. The moral police around these shores banned the heck out of it, which makes Basic Instinct look very tame.
Back when I had halfly read the book, it (the movie) looks like a really rushed flash in the pan that only wants to get done with the film's version of softcore bdsm.

Under the Silver Lake - Like the director's earlier movie It Follows, I respected this on some level mainly because of the originality. I just can't say I truly enjoyed watching either one. For most of UtSL I found myself admitting it was quirky and ambitious, but that never managed to make me care about what was going on. And unlike It Follows, which I've given at least two chances, I doubt I'll ever watch this again considering its bloated running time. 5 / 10

Alien Nation - A sci-fi movie no one remembers, which was adapted into a TV series no one watched. Is it a gem lost in the clutter of late 80's blockbuster sci-fi like Robocop, Predator and The Abyss and deserves a second look? Probably not. Rockne S. O'Bannon's (Farscape and Defiance creator) script has a few interesting ideas, like the titular aliens being a slave race who've escaped their captors and finally found respite in America, but is American capitalism really that preferable to living on a slave ship? There were also a few clever moments of world-building, such as the aliens' beverage of choice being week-old spoiled milk (best with lumps!), and US customs being so overloaded with aliens, they just start assigning them names of famous actors and politicians for their earth names.

But don't let these ideas fool you, the movie's a bog-standard buddy cop flick, clearly inspired by the Lethal Weapon films and In the Heat of the night. It honestly wouldn't have been able to justify its own existence if it didn't have the "one partner's an angrier James Kirk human, the other partner's an even more chill Mr. Spock alien" dynamic. Some of the action is solid (particularly the shootout at the beginning, which feels kinda Michael Mann-ish), James Caan, Mandy Patinkin and Terence Stamp are at the top of their games and Stan Winston's make-up is magnificently subtle, but by the time the credits roll around you just kinda wonder why the fuck you finished watching it. 4/10, might be worth a look in seeing how so much talent can end in something so thoroughly underwhelming.

I watched 1971's Wake in Fright. What an amazing journey through hell, drunken masculinity, and depressing inner conflict. I've never seen so much fucking beer in one film before, and DAMN it made me thirsty.

Her Smell completely fucked me up. It's just the most intentionally fucked up garbage and it really makes the viewer uncomfortable, right up until it doesn't. It's been a while since a movie brought me to tears.

Saw a few recently.

Widows is quite something to watch. The twist actually caught me off guard, the performances were great all around, the dialogue was believable. Nothing more to say, just see it.

A Quiet Place had a pretty neat concept ("what if Tremors wasn't a comedy and the villains were above-ground") and a few moments of actual tension, but after they showed the audience (halfway through the movie) that sound-masking works I spent the entire second half wondering why you wouldn't just live in a tent next to that waterfall or surround your house with a "fence" of jackhammers to keep them distracted.

Vice...meh. Arguably worth it for the lead performances, but this just didn't really work for me as a film. The Shakespearean bedroom scene was especially cringe-worthy. And though I didn't exactly expect nuanced discourse or strict adherence to facts from the people who made the Big Short, I still found much to grimace at here as a quasi-biopic. In particular: that "Zarqawi was a random nobody that Cheney made famous" bit was some galaxy-brain level of horse manure, and the entire film was premised on this bizarre idea that Cheney wasn't actually a neocon ideologue.

A Star is Born: Lady Gaga should switch to acting full time and quit making the least catchy pop songs ever.

The other night I watched a weird movie called Colossal. It's kind of hard to even talk about without giving it away - I highly recommend watching it without watching trailers or even looking at the movie poster if you can. Sort of a dark comedy, with some more serious drama, with another thing in there that's totally bonkers.

Spoiler: show
The other thing is kaiju! The one thing that kind of took me out of the movie is that, since the monsters always appear in the same place, why didn't they, you know, evacuate Seoul? Or at least that area?

Definitely worth a watch.

Hoping to go see Midsommar with the fiancé this weekend. I'm all googly eyes and silly about The Wickerman and Hereditary. Looks like the two smashed together into one film. Hyyyyped.

I adored Midsommar. It isn't as visceral or quite as disturbing as Hereditary, but it still is disturbing as fuck and it's also just a joy to look at. I felt like I was so sucked into the world of the film that afterwards I was in a sort of daze. It's also interesting that when you're watching it it seems entirely dissimilar to Hereditary but when you think about it after you notice all these pretty obvious connections. Loved it. Ari Aster's insane.

Midsommar is one of the only horror flicks I can think of that portrays a 20-something relationship so well. Most of these movies treat kids like one dimensional idiots but this actually felt like the characters could've been from a romance/drama but were dropped into a horror movie.

Also iamntbatman - Colossal is such a mindfuck of a movie and it's crazy that it's so coherent and makes so much sense despite the plot being so bizarre. I can't get enough. Hope the makers of that keep going for sure.

I finally got around to seeing Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet. Or maybe it was the other way around. It had no business being that good. I enjoyed it probably more than the first one, which was cute but otherwise just kind of... there.

Weirdest thing about this movie - There's an part featuring a mess of Disney princesses, including Moana. Now, I've seen Moana about 11 million times, thanks to my 6 year old niece who loves it, so I thought it might be the same actress voicing her. So I went online and checked. Yup. In fact, all of the Disney princesses are voiced by the original actresses, if they were still living. Cool little detail work there, Disney.

Really bizarre stuff to be honest. Recently, good horror films for me have essentially been completely within the realm of the untested. Directors with not a single feature film under their belts who've really astonished with their work. I know Nacho is nearly at this level, being young and only having done a few features, but it really seemed like his career trajectory was leading elsewhere and that this movie is sort of the freak stand out. I hope he continues to make such great films.

Very hyped to watch Midsommar.

I respect films like that, and It Follows/Under the Silver Lake, that are weird and fluid and metaphoric and may not make so much sense in a concrete manner. It's art and can be about expressing somewhat ephemeral feelings/messages in slightly abstract ways. I dig it when it's done well.

Under the Silver Lake is tomorrow for me. To be honest I'm sort of hyped because people seem to like it less than It Follows - I feel like there's not a whole ton of chance I'll really hate it so probably it'll be damn good and the general moviegoing public are the dimwits here.

I didn't think it was as good because it was way too long and a few things about it left me scratching my head a little (some parts of the story seemed self indulgent or like it was almost glorifying the main character's sleazebag behavior, but that was kinda up in the air and it seemed almost open to interpretation), but I did enjoy what he was going for and it seemed like a more expansive, eclectic experience - so I think his future efforts will really knock it out of the park. Definitely one to watch for sure.

Dragged Across Concrete - Another long but worthwhile movie from S. Craig Zahler. This didn't have the obscene level of violence that Brawl in Cell Block 99 did, but it held my interest and had a satisfying ending. 7 / 10

The Ring Two - I don't know how consistently successful this franchise is as far as the Japanese movies. For the English language ones, it seems like a one hit wonder. This wasn't really any better than the lame Naomi-Watts-less 2017 reboot. 4 / 10

Destination Wedding sure is a lame way to spend 90 minutes, but I had fun with it. Loved watching Lydia Deetz and Johnny Utah bicker, philosophize, talk about fucking, and fuck.
