EDIT: Here's another. This song (and a couple others on this album, like the title track) is pure modern groove metal:

The title track I'd wager is more than just modern groove metal; It's the closest Slipknot have ever come to straight up death metal, even with the shoutalong chorus and big breakdowns throughout the last part of the song.

Pooh's "L'aquila e il falco" is a total oddity: it's a song on the light side of metal, but the fact that it came out of nowhere in 2010 from a 60's italian pop "rock" (using the term veeeery loosely) band is baffling

I don't know, but that artwork is 10/10.

This is a really subjective topic.....

A lot of 70s rock sounds like metal to me even tho the artists/bands arent overall. It also comes down to 'heavy' and 'metal' because there is a difference.

'Heavier' than Priest/Maiden IMO.

I'd love to hear them record some really slow doom, they could definitely pull it off. Some Black Metal tracks would be awesome too but I don't know if they are into that. Anything they attempt turns out unreal though.

Thank you for posting that. I’ve been trying to get into this band for years and I think this record will finally be the one that does it for me. They’ve also released two other songs from it and they’re also very good. I’m really looking forward to checking this album out when it’s released next month.

This song got me into Heathen (the San Francisco band) who covered it- and did an MTV video for it back in 1987.
It's a great song from a great band- and of course Heathen was a great band back then too (not sure if theyre still around or not.)

Heathen are, and they're supposed to be releasing an album either this year or next.

I'm also really surprised they've never heard Set Me Free, given it's been covered by Saxon, Heathen, Stryper, Vince Neil, etc. etc.

Sum 41 always have had metal sensibilities.

Remember the short bonus track Pain For Pleasure on All Killer No Filler?

What exactly is metal about those riffs? Absolutely nothing to my ears.

It's just NYC hardcore punk-style chords.
Compare the Offspring song to some old HC band like Minor Threat

There's nothing metal about either of these songs riffs

Then we could argue about this being a UK82 hardcore punk song instead, because it's also open chords:

Actually this sounds a lot like Discharge:

BUT... The Grave Digger song is obvsiouly a METAL Song while Discharge is hardcore punk.

The Offspring is a POP PUNK song, with some NYC hardcore punk influences. No metal.

Just wanted to make a point why the Offspring song has no place in this thread, that's all

A good mixture of first Bathory, old Zemial, NWoBHM and some other outer Metal influences. Don't know why this band is not here:

This song sounds pretty heavily influenced by modern hardcore to me. There’s a couple metal riffs but I wouldn’t say they’re the bulk of the music here.

I remember wondering why they weren't on the Archives when I heard their most recent album but it's great stuff either way. I hadn't realized blackened protometal was a thing that I wanted.

Had almost forgotten this one. It's also a hundred times better than anything by bands like Muncipal Waste.

They were pretty good at this.

STARLIT "Ataraxis" is an ambient black metal album, very atmospheric, spacey, dreamy, hypnotic...
Perhaps it's the lack of vocals that make them (him) unworthy of joining MA, or maybe it's just too ambient? There's definitely some stuff on the album that's not metal, but some that I consider as such.
Anyway, judge for thyself. Great music regardless.

Much of Protest the Hero's Scurrilous is pretty much flashy progressive metal bordering on tech-thrash, somewhere between Realm/Toxik and Spiral Architect.

"Extremities, dirt and various repressed emotions" by Killing Joke

More metal than many other albums deeprooted in the genre, this one contains blastbeats, grind parts, death metal, thrash metal within, a great listening extreme pleasure I highly recommend.

Killing Joke never been a metal band.

As far as The Bitter End by Sum 41 goes, the song itself is *really* nothing special on its own. At best it's decent filler thrash. HOWEVER...

Listening to it in the context of the whole album? It's pretty goddamn amazing. It's such a great contrast and it adds dimensional character that otherwise wouldn't be there. It's definitely a song that is strengthened by the full album experience. I've always loved Chuck though so perhaps I'm biased.

Agreed. However, the "Pylon" album has plenty of very Metal moments, as well.

To be fair, there's a lot of metal that isn't included in the archives: some industrial metal, most nu metal, etc.

This song is clearly metal too (maybe even the whole album). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6QLzBSTUEg

False. All bands that have a predominantly metal album that was validly released and distributed are already here.

Weirdly, the album they released just this week tried to go back in that direction for the first time since. No real full metal songs a la The Bitter End, but a bunch of Kirk Hammett-worship solos thrown in there at least.

There are countless random shitty bedroom BM bands and 70's-90's bands in general I can guarantee you aren't on here because they released like one demo or EP and vanished off the face of the earth. Nevermind that you guys have a specific definition of metal that intentionally excludes a bunch of at least metal-adjacent genres like djent and -core, even the ones which aren't predominantly hardcore, for better or for worse. I don't really care about that (I'm not interested in a "but [BAND] is metal!" pissing fight), but you guys aren't the ultimate arbiter of what counts as Metal, and you even admit as much yourselves.

I previously didn't give a shit for Europe, but you are correct, this is an outrage. Butt rockers like Def Leppard get included, and stuff like Mr. Bungle has about 30 seconds of metal in their actual discography that somehow qualifies them (yeah yeah, fuzzy "death metal" demos...) are included.

Start the petition.

Europe is awesome, but they don't really have an album that is metal enough throughout. Say what you want about Def leapard but their first album(s) was nwobhm enough to make it here, and I agree.
