I live in a very isolated part of the country. For recording purposes, I was curious about what I need to record guitars directly into my PC. I wanted a pretty decent sound, but I'm pretty new to it. Could anybody give me some tips or hardware I would need? I currently use Mixcraft.

Thanks

If you're still pretty new to it, I would avoid spending a lot of money. You can get a pretty cheap amp modeler pedal and plug it directly into your computer's microphone line-in jack.

I'd try to avoid recording straight into your PC, specially if you live isolated, which is perfect, and you can make a lot of noise. Just get yourself a decent Mic and a cheap audio interface to connect to your computer and you can record from your amp :headbang:

I would recommend a Lexicon Alpha interface, runs about $60 and will allow 1/4th inch cables as well as XLR cable inputs for mics. You can use free VSTs like the Nickcrow or 6505 amp vsts to simulate an amp or you can buy a low costing dynamic mic like a Pylepro PDMIC78 for $10 to mic up your amps. There's also amp sim vsts like Amplitude which will let you test out the amps and cabs before you buy the VSTs for around $5 each.

Your guitar tracks will more than likely sound very thin initially, VST or mic, so what a lot of us do is record the track twice but make at least one copy of each guitar track as well as equalize them to make them sound right.

edit: You could also get a Rocksmith usb cable to plug your guitar straight in via usb instead of the interface.

I have an article exactly about this. From what audio interface, cables, headphones, and DAW. All there.
Here it is: https://chernobylstudios.com/record-metal-guitars.html.

I've just started this myself and have bought a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and Invasion by Get Good Drums. I've played around a little with Amplitude's free plugin (called Custom Shop) and wasn't a huge fan of it. Can get a fairly good distorted tone but it's not a par on my amp so I think I'm gonna record that via mic. It's the drum programming that I'm struggling with tbh, so fucking complicated haha

I've tried the Focusrite scarlett 2i2 and had horrible problems with latency, the cheaper Presonus USB96 ~100USD has been a dream to use with Reaper (Free for personal use, full featured DAW that ROCKS).
There are also quite a few free amp simulator plugins that work very well, but if you have another 100 bucks, Guitar Rig 5 is pretty intuitive to get an OK sound. so all in all about 200USD for something that can last a long time and is quite flexible IMO.

REAPER is NOT free for personal use. Do you not notice the 5 second pop-up that you have to wait through after the trial period ends in order to proceed using the program?

An entry-level Focusrite interface, an SM57 copy mic by Pyle (get it off Amazon) and a download of Reaper along with midi drum software is what dreams are made of these days. Or forgo the mic entirely with one of the many amp sims out there. Helix Native, Fortin, Bias, whatever you like.

Fair, I did personally purchase the license, but if you are just playing around to get your feet wet the trial period never expires. So Reaper has the best "feature completeness vs. barrier to entry" ratio as far as DAWs go imo.

Off topic probably, but I'm curious if you ran into phasing issues with the copied tracks? Did you manage to avoid that entirely with EQ work?

People can be very hung up about this, but for all intents and purposes, it's possible to utlilise Reaper to a great effect entirely for free. I believe that's what counts for people who might say that Reaper is free, although it's technically incorrect. I think it's helpful to point this out, because we don't want anyone to be turned off from looking into Reaper because someone said that it's actually not free. Happy users can end up as paying customers, so you're helping Cockos by encouraging people to try it out.

Same here. I started learning how to make music not so long ago. Currently I use a DAW for music production and now I'm working on my basic beat, sample, layer, mix in my home studio. I read about best studio monitors and want to buy a few for my future studio. Hope I'll finish my first track in the near future.
