Nokturnal Mortum - The Forgotten Age of Victories

Trying to get hyped up for a run in the forest! The lyrics are a bit too hateful and cruel for my workout mood :P , but the mid part with the speech makes me want to pick up the sword!

Been meaning to find a good time to play this again. Not the kind of music you can just throw on as background music in the car. Searing epics. A shitload of passion.

I agree. The first time I listened to it it was just some background music, and I thought "huh cool, nice folk music and black metal", but when you read the booklet and see the images and the message it makes it a whole new experience. You can see where his passion comes from.

Indeed. It's socially important metal. A rarity really.

Fates Warning - Nothing Left to Say

Dramatic and yet somewhat subtle and businesslike - a rich and textured thing.

I just think the other songs flow perfectly fine, whereas Tomb~ has some confused parts here and there.

You finally like it! :P

NP: Ancient Rites - Garden of Delights

Some sharp-as-nails riffing on this one. Not bad.

Yep... I was listening to their later music for a while until Arch/Matheos' new album steamrolled all of it, but yeah they have some killer stuff in more of a cerebral, coffee-shop-like atmosphere after Arch left in the 80s.

What's a good album to start with?

High Violet was my first.

Sorry I missed this post earlier! Yeah, High Violet is by far my favourite one, even though most people point to "Boxer" as their classic.

Amon Amarth - Risen From the Sea

Have never really given this disc much attention.

Yeah they have obviously gotten more commercial but the traits are all pretty much there.

Poisonblack - Maybe Life Is Not For Everyone

This might be the closest to the mid era Sentenced sound they got.

Pathology - Reborn to Kill

I'm actually really impressed with the new Pathology album. The S/T felt a bit like a letdown, but this? Feels ALOT more mature when it comes to songwriting.

Doomentor - Elder Ground

Sledgehammer riffs, occult-atmosphere and sharp-spitting shrieks. Reminds me of Tiamat's '91-'92 stuff or perhaps Tribulation's modern offerings but way heavier/riffier.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

I've considered myself a Sonic Youth fan for quite a while and never listened to this. Until now. This is great

Asphyx - Last One on Earth

You know, sometimes I just get the urge to revisit bands I was convinced weren't for me and it does wonders. Crushing, suffocation and full of doom-y riffs crawling all over the floor.

Lost Horizon - Pure

Been hitting the spot. Heiman's vocals are amazing but don't discount these sweet rhythms and chugging riffs - super dextrous stuff a la Tad Morose in that old Swedish PM style. That Swedish style is really one of PM's best overall I think - the right mix of aggression and melody.

Atlantean Kodex - People of the Moon (Dawn of Creation)

The first track from the mighty Kodex's new album, and it's insanely good! Not that there was any doubt.

Sepultura - 'Desperate Cry'

was in the mood for some old thrash for the first time in a while... Sepultura's finest hour here never fails to impress. Arise is glorious.

Twilightning - Gone to the Wall

This is super saccharine, but the writing is always so much fun that it hardly matters. They could really shred.

That band is one that on paper I should really love, yet they never really done much to me.

NP: Swazafix - Sanctimonious Godz

Reminds me of Consuming Impulse-era Pestilence, and not just because of the vocals.

I agree, and also Holy Water. Take off Forever and The Spirit Will Remain.

Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Aeon

I like this entire album while I'm listening to it, the only problem is hardly any of it is memorable after. The cover of "Sick Dirty and Mean" is probably the most memorable moment.

Those are all good tunes from that EP, but I don't think Hellfire Club would be as good if you just piled on more aggressive tunes to what's already there - it's about the balance. "Spirit Will Remain" isn't a very exciting song but I do like "Forever" and think it fits in fine.

Lord - Immortal

Man, I've been waiting for a new album from these guys for fucking forever. Digital Lies was... different. Still a solid release. But this new album is 100% certified awesome, at least after a couple of listens. Nice to see the original drummer back on, if only as a session musician.

Fairyland-Score to a New Beginning
Not as great as I thought it was before, A Soldiers Letter is ok, but man the self titled does not need to be that long. I will say that 2:32 is a fucking phenomenal part and the song shouldve revolved that part. God its fantastic

HammerFall- Dominion.

Another day, another Hammerfall album. Listless ballads and boring fast songs as per usual, but this one manages to outdo Built to Last due to one area: mid-paced, skull-pounding traditional metal songs. The title track, "Chain of Command", "Dead by Dawn" and "Testify" (which may be the band's meanest and heaviest song in some time) are all the kind of tracks HammerFall ought to do more of, maybe pack a whole album with.

Control the Storm - Darkest Fantasy

The song's a little undisciplined and meandering, but those hooks are pure fire!
