Darkthrone - The Hardship of the Scots

So fucking good. That slightly melodic riff after the chugging in the second half...

Black Tower - Death March

Don't get the hate for this band. Some real interesting vocal melodies, the out-of-tune expressiveness reminds me of something Alan Averill would occasionally do, or even Quorthon. Riffs aren't too special, but the vocals keep things interesting here.

Motorhead - Dead Men Tell No Tales

Classic Lemmy, Eddie, and Philthy. the Bomber thread made me bust this out again.

The music world is forever lessened without Motorhead in it. RIP!

Virgin Steele - Marriage of Heaven and Hell part 2

Slightly better than the first one, that's the impression. Both parts demand more listening, though.

FALL OF SERAPHS

A great old school death metal band from France,
with a blackened/ brutal touch.

Visigoth - The Revenant King

Black Tower are more similar to this band than people will readily admit, methinks.

The Flaming Lips - Mr. Ambulance Driver

This is a gorgeous song. Love the ambulance sound effects - that shit always elevates a song for me.

Rites of Spring - End on End

AKA their 1985 debut with the bonus track from its 1987 reissue slotted in the tracklist and their 1987 EP tacked on the end - everything you could ever want from them.

Tales of Medusa - Curse of the Shameful Profligate

Demo version from the 2005 recording Polydectes. The vocals on this one are extremely weird and kind of off-putting, but I suspect it's because the band hadn't found a proper vocalist yet. That said, I still enjoy it immensely and the riffs are still killer!

Sarcofagus - Cycle of Life

Super offbeat quirky old metal from Finland. Pretty great groovy 70s guitars and warbly vocals. I'm digging it.

I've recently got into that album. Killer stuff - and I can't help but think it's got a few Beneath the Remains-esque riffs here and there, just delivered in a more sinister fashion of course.

Their best album!

So-so production, great riffs.

Yeah I'd been meaning to try it. Luckily Spotify had my back. It's interesting because it's not terribly far removed from the metal/rock of its time, but there are enough weird little touches that show you they were sort of isolated and on their own, just improvising and fucking around, without some big burgeoning scene they were constantly surrounded by.

Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache

It's funny listening to this now because it was like my third album I ever bought or whatever. It shaped my taste in that I could take or leave the screaming parts, but the more melodic sections, I was like "I need more stuff like this," and so that was the direction I went in musically.

They were quite alone, which probably did good to their music, some way at least. There were some other groups at that time, but not many. Heavy metal was mostly despised in the media.

Iron Maiden - Lord of the Flies (Death on the Road version)

I like Blaze, but Dickinson takes this song on a whole another level.

It also contains my favorite "whoa-oh" sing along in a Maiden song ever.

What is your favorite?

My Dying Bride - 'The Whore, the Cook and the Mother'

Strange song, and it's not even the weirdest one on the album - it is the best one though.

Not Maiden, but "Killing Floor" from Bruce's Chemical Wedding has a nice example.

Chastain - Paradise

Been jonesing for some screaming heavy metal thunder to break up the weirder shit I've been listening to.
