A bit of background: I have been a Metalhead since about 1996 and I have amassed a fairly large collection of Metal dating from 1970 to the early, mid 2000's. I have felt so overloaded by checking out thousands of bands throughout the years that eventually, around 2005, I kind of checked out and just listened to what I had and tried to fill in all the gaps of the most classic (previous) decades - from this I have found an almost infinite amount of material to last practically a lifetime. A times I have determined that I need not go further and (yet) I wonder what the new might bring.

My incredibly stupid and lazy as fuck question is what albums have I missed out on from the last ten years or so that would effectively slap me silly and newly enforce my attention? I am already well aware of the newer Overkill albums and other various more famous bands, but who, hitherto unknown to me has arisen as titans of Metal? I am seriously out of the loop at this point. Fire away and I will listen. Thank you so much.

P.S. genre preferences as simply no Metal-core, fuck that b.s.

My favorite band of all time, Mary's Blood, have only really been active for ~8 years, and I think you might enjoy 'em as long as you don't mind the language barrier. Top-shelf power metal with speed and verve to spare.

I've been listening to metal since 2006 and I have a hard time keeping up with the modern classics. While I do believe plenty of gems are still undiscovered that are from a time back, there's obviously some modern bands out there that I wish will keep up for a long time because they're fucking promising.

Ripper - Experiments from Existence
Thrash/death metal with a slight technical edge to it. Think of Beneath the Remains meets Human meets Malleus Maleficarum. I'm not really into modern thrash but this one is pretty good.

Hooded Menace - Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed
Perhaps THE modern doom/death metal album - it's got massive grooves, hammering riffs, with a touch of melancholy on top.

Asphodelus - Stygian Dreams
More killer doom/death metal. Imagine early Katatonia circa Dance of December Souls hailing from Greece instead of Sweden.

Vultures Vengeance - The Knightlore
Imagine Queensryche circa '83-84 with a more epic heavy metal attitude and rougher vocals. The vocals are put a bit low in the mix, but otherwise it's absolutely fantastic stuff.

Enjoy!

I have been on a Mary’s Blood kick recently, myself. The Japanese power metal scene in general has been really good.

Heathen's album The Evolution of Chaos is an album you must check out! The best melodic thrash metal album of the 21st century.

And of course if it comes to Doom Metal Abysmal Grief:

It's hard to recommend you something thats modern and just a "must listen". Everyone has there own favorites if it comes to this.

I haven't heard much this decade worth mentioning, to be honest. However, the latter half has largely been an improvement over the former half; not as many trend hoppers now, I guess, what with the thrash revival, Boss HM-2 buzzsaw revival, blackgaze/post-black trend, et cetera. Here are a couple of what I think are the most notable records of this decade. I'll probably add to this list later, though.

Nécropole - Solarité (2018) (France, Black Metal)
Their demo compilation from 2016 was good, but this blows it away, imo. I think the production is better, as are the compositions. Each composition is atmospheric, but it still has melodically informed riffs to back up the atmosphere, and the whole mix creates a very epic atmosphere that charges forward as if into battle. Highlights are "Aurore", "Ferments de Corruption", and "Sous L'Egide D'Eros", though you really must hear the album in context.

RÛR - RÛR (2018) (Norway, Black Metal)
Another 2018 debut entry, this album is much like Solarité in that it has melodically informed riffs while still being atmospheric. The composition quality is great, and the production is very fitting; rather murky and dreamlike, while still having a sense of clarity. This was my album of the year last year. This album must be listened to as a whole to be thoroughly enjoyed.

Serpent Ascending - Ananku (2016) (Finland, Death Metal)
Only the Finns could create something like this. While the riff structuring would imply black metal, the composition approaches this from the perspective of a death metal band. The results are, quite frankly, rather bizarre, but still very appealing to listen to. Whether from the (pleasantly) jarring dissonance of the guitar tone, to the rather creepy vocals that range from almost being hoarse whispers to ritualistic chantings, to the unsettling artwork and the vague surrealistic lyrics, this will probably be praised as a classic, and rightfully so.

They kind of split people on here between undying devotion and OVERRATED, but I am on the bandwagon:

Mgła

My favourite record is the last one, Exercises In Futility (2015), but everything they've put out is high quality.
