Infernal War and Anima Damnata 'poppy'? WTF

By no means is I.F. the recent Polish scene. Neither is Anima Damnata, they were formed in 96.

Try Anima Damnata, Infernal War, Blaze of Perdition

I haven't heard of Anima Damnata, thanks, I'll check it out. My favourite Polish band as of late has been Outre. Although the albums didn't make a tremendous impression - although they are good - they were very intense live. Then there's Kriegsmaschine, which has interesting drumming, at very least.

Have fun, let me know what you think, their lyrical subjects are very twisted at times if you really look into it. Haha. I’ve also been checking out Thunderbolt, another polish band, their last two albums have members of Damnata and Infernal war

In regards to Polish black metal, I'm more into Veles, Graveland, Kataxu etc.

My favorite Ildjarn-worshippers are Gandr and Vordr. Also check out the likes of Ødelegger, 1389, Meti Bhuvah.

ok Vordr is definitely a little more than just Ildjarn worship but I really dig it. the self-titled, production wise with the tones of the instruments almost has a dm thickness/wetness. wretched riffs all over the place, will definitely be listening to it more. Haat's first album was enjoyable a fair bit but I thought it didn't reach the highs of forest poetry. seemed mostly like the tracks were going for that 'whispering breeze' vibe, and less so the 'midnight interval' or 'descending' vibes where the riffing is more subtle and evocative. still was a good listen though.

fuck my own face for not fucking just clicking on the dude's name and checking out his other projects like Sort Vokter. would've made way too much sense. thanks for bringing them to my attention though. Folkloric Necro Metal is literally the answer to all my life's questions right now.

going to check out the other ones in coming days. thanks again all.

When you say "Vordr" self-titled you have to be a bit more specific. They have 6.

There isn't much out there like Ildjarn. His discography is massive though, so keep digging around in there. If you're really into Sort Vokter, check out the Ildjarn-Nidhogg compilation. That contains the best material, imo. I also like the Nidhogg '94 demo that was reissued in 2015.

I'm on a space BM kick. Anything good outside the obvious Darkspace/Lunar Aurora/Midnight Odyssey recommendations? I'm really enjoying Arkhtinn.

There's a lot like Ildjarn but most of it is a bad rehash. Ildjarn, Nidhogg and Sort Vokter is where it's at indeed.

Greetings, (sort of) new user here. Already said hi at the Tavern.

I'm looking for something a little more ambient but still on the realm of BM, such as Filosofem, Mortualia's Blood of the Hermit or Paysage d'Hiver's Das Tor. Thanks!

Check out Blazebirth Hall bands like Branikald - "Blikk av Kald" & "Kveldulv," Forest - "Like a Blaze Above the Ashes." Probably the greatest artists in this style.

Also great is Sanguine Eagle from the US. The Individuation demo and the two new albums are all incredible.

It was the one from 2019. The stuff with Nidhogg is amazing, especially 'Norse'.

Also listened to Ødelegger - The Titan's Tomb and it's amazingly awesome, totally nails the more subtle/obscure feel of certain Ildjarn tracks. Big thanks again to HviteGuden and The Ardbeg Wizard!!! Been playing the feck out of this.

indeed, odelegger is probably no. 1 in this game, his best material is on the early tapes though (the debut album is great too).

Can anyone recommend bands that use atonality?

It doesn't have to be completely atonal, but have some level of it. DSO is an obvious example, but I also enjoy how Enslaved for instance often feel like they're flirting with an atonal sound on their early albums without ever going full Gorguts - Obscura.

Anyways, that's really the only examples I have - I've had trouble finding more stuff like this.

Hmm, can you point out specifically what parts of early Enslaved albums you mean? I might have some recommendations, but it might not be strictly atonal, as - to my understanding - that term is actually quite rigidly defined, and very little metal music is genuinely atonal.

Except Deathspell Omega, their countryman-project Blut Aus Nord has the dissonant sound on the number of its albums. Moreover, BAN has established it even earlier, than DsO, however, DsO became the most popular band with such sound. And today there's a quite some amount of such artists. Icelandic scene made this style somewhat of a trademark for itself. There are Svartidauði, Misþyrming, Sinmara, Carpe Noctem, Óreiða and many other artists, who feature such sound. Some non-Icelandic examples also come to my mind, those are the likes of Devouring Star, Lorn, Kostnatění, Arizmenda, Blattaria. Today this sound is pretty popular.

Good post. I'd also mention Ved Buens Ende, as I feel like they were an early pioneer of the dissonant style.

Isn't Mayhem's "Chimera" atonal?

I dunno, I think I remember hearing people saying that when it was released. *shrugs* Maybe the riffing?

Eh, it may have some chromatic bits, but on the whole I don't think it's atonal. As said, that term is kinda exact about what it means, which is, simply put, that there is no discernible key. Mayhem's Chimera is very consistently in some minor key.

Hello everyone!

My request will most likely sound too broad by the site's rules, but I have been out of the BM scene for a couple of years now and need to update the music I listen to these days.

Are there any good current releases (2018-2019) from bands with a sound similar to Sargeist (Let The Devil In, Unbound), Mgla (Exercises, Age of Excuse), Drudkh, Nokturnal Mortum (Voice of Steel), Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Deathspell Omega and Blut Aus Nord (Memoria Vetusta I)? I've already listened to some of the new stuff put out by these bands, but feel free to recommend other stuff by the members on those.

I know it's a bit much, but hopefully someone out there can help me get up to date.
