Looking for music that would suit walking through a cold autumn forest. Not quite as bleak and harsh as black metal with a more winter feel, but still somewhat melancholic I guess.

October Falls' album Marras really nails this feeling for me. Also bands like Austere, Drudkh and Agalloch at times.

I'm not just looking for black metal, but it is my favourite style. Anything that has a proper, autumn melancholic feel without being too melodramatic would be awesome.

Thanks.

By my perception, the autumn is feel is well recognised on the following albums: Primordial "A Journey's End", Shining "VI - Klagopsalmer", Korgonthurus "Marras" (that's special November edition), Nargaroth "Geliebte Des Regens" + "Herbst" from "Jahreszeiten", Brocken Moon "Hoffnungslos", Aaskereia "Mit Raben Und Wölfen", Ulver "Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler", Forgotten Woods "As The Wolves Gather" (that's special autumn - winter edition).

Along with the aforementioned Drudkh and early Ulver, my go-to autumn albums are:

The 3rd And The Mortal - everything up to and including "Painting On Glass".

Opeth - "Orchid". To me, this album has always felt more like folky black metal than progressive death metal, and just evokes perfectly that autumnal woody feeling.

Of The Wand And The Moon - pretty much everything, though "Lucifer" and "Sonnenheim" are my particular favourites. The music always makes me feel like late October evenings.

Anathema - "Pentecost III" EP and "The Silent Enigma". Maybe a bit too melodramatic, but for me this era of their career has a real autumnal feel.

I posted these guys in another thread but they're GREAT for this time of year. Really original gothic/doom metal. Their first two albums are their best and mandatory listens:

The Equinox Ov The Gods

Seconding Gallowbraid. Highly recommended

Also check out October Tides Rain Without End. Just the right amounts of beauty, melancholy, gloom & melody.

And might I add The Morningside from Russia. Their answer to Katatonia.

Oh and Saor. You must listen to Saor. Like, right now.

Forest Stream - Crown of Winter - Obviously winter themed rather than autumn but I think you might still like it. There's also a track on the album called The Autumn Dancers but I think the title tracks is the best song.

Craving - Dance with the Wind off of At Dawn

Zuriaake has been one of my go-to bands for autumns since I discovered them a few years ago. The new EP was slightly disappointing, but both albums are tremendous.

Negură Bunget is another band that I play more during autumn than any other time of year. 'n crugu bradului, Inarborat kosmos and Om are all excellent and perfect for this time of year.

Insomnium in general has an autumn feel most of the time. This album especially:

If ever a band deserved the tag "Autumnal Metal", it'd be Canada's Black Lotus. From the imagery to the lyrics to the sound of the music, to me it rings autumn.

Here are some of my favorite autumn picks:

Paradise Lost - Shades of God + Icon + Draconian Times (devastating combo for sure)
Lake Of Tears - Headstones (simply better and "rawer" feeling than on Forever Autumn)
Sentenced - Down (this one is a must!)
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day (this is especially suited for those rainy days)
Crematory - Awake
Anathema - Alternative 4 + Judgement + A Fine Day To Exit (mega combo for loooong days)
Ulver - Bergtatt (a walk through an autumn forest)
Saturnus - Martyre (the guitar tone!)
Amorphis - Tounela
My Dying Bride - The Angel and The Dark River (like walking through the old, misty London harbor)
Opeth - Morningrise (well, the cover art says all)
Mortiis - The Smell Of Rain
Theatre Of Tragedy - Aegis
The Gathering - Mandylion (great album overall)

Novembers Doom is probably another obvious choice. The Pale Haunt Departure being my favourite of theirs.

Shape of Despair has also always held that damp, misty, mossy but in a way serene feel to my ears:

Been listening to Legenda's debut album 'Autumnal', and surely, it sounds... autumnal.

It is the solo project of ex-Impaled Nazarene guy Sir Luttinen.

Windwalker's "The dance of the elves" is brimming with autumnal magic. If you don't agree wtih me now, wait for another three seasons until we're lords 'n' ladies of shadows and goldenwood again.

To a lesser extent, November Doom's "Of sculptured ivy and stone flowers" exudes some of it too.

I was going come in and mention Opeth’s debut album, but I see it was already suggested early on which confirms to me that I was quite correct. The track Forest in October contains one of the best epic riffs on it.
