Putting Amorphis back on the shelf, and not too far away was this. Mood.

Features Doug Pinnick (from Kings X) and George Lynch. Very solid, groovy alt rock. Lynch is on fire too, some nice leftfield riffs and shredding solos.

That Anathema EP is an interesting one - it's got a much more epic/grandiose feel compared to their other earlier stuff, even if the first two songs don't flow too well. Got to finish my review for this thing soon.

NP: Varathron - Flowers of my Youth

The most aggressive piece of this swampy offering.

I think it was probably the first time they really got the production right for their sound (it definitely carried over to The Silent Enigma, but even by then Darren White had left and they were slowly beginning to move in a different direction). I think they simplified their compositional style and focused on building the atmosphere more as a priority.

Really strong songwriting with some nice subtle touches in arrangement. Lovely production, and quite catchy.

Thantifaxath - Gasping in Darkness

Whew damn, haven't listened to this monster of a record in quite some time. Great stuff, definitely one of the very best of the decade.

Inspired by the chat in the bad guitarists thread (not that there’s bad guitaring here). Is it strange that I like the hollow tom sound?

The Day Everything Became Nothing - Slow Death By Grinding

Amazing goregrind EP. Rather short, but all the songs are great. Production is great too, this stuff sounds really heavy.

The Sins of Thy Beloved - My Love

I'm really listening to the whole Lake of Sorrow album, since it's just excellent.

After Forever - Evoke

They saved the best for last as far as I'm concerned, though "Decipher" is a very, very close second to the self-titled album for me.

Wintershadows - The Birds

Sounds like a catchier version of early My Dying Bride or something. Fun stuff.

Yeah, that final album is full of greats. "Withering Time" and "Dreamflight" are two of my favorites in Floor's oeuvre, alongside "Evoke."

Yeah the s/t and Remagine were good. Been meaning to revisit sometime.

Arch/Matheos - Wanderlust

Can't stop with this... just a tremendous fucking listen.

Mercury Rising - Upon Deaf Ears

It's a shame this band didn't get heavier and more interesting. They had something here.

Acerus - The Sentinel of the Demise

Daniel Corchado does some thrashy heavy metal. Kind of like Deceased. But with that Corchado-style melodicism and occult atmosphere.

Kriegsmachine - Residual Blight

Wow, the drums really steal the show here. I'm not a musician, so I can't tell how technically impressive this really is, but it impresses me!

Haven't listened to those guys in years. Use to see them live every now and then. Really god stuff. I remember them being more mid-paced than your average goregrind but boy it made them sound heavy.

One of maybe a dozen live albums that I still bother with. Lots of funky grooves here too. Hendrix really has a lot of space and a solid backing to go way out there.

Joy Division - Dead Souls

I think the NIN cover is amazing, but I love the original as well. Been listening to this song over and over all weekend into today.

Cradle of Filth - Hammer of the Witches

I never listened to any of their stuff post-Damnation an a Day (which I found very underwhelming when it was released), but damn this is some good stuff.

It's pretty solid. I like their second album quite a bit too, even if it's more sophisticated prog.

NP: Varathron - The Dark Hills

Reminds me more of The Cure than anything else. Could have improved it with some actual harsh vocals though.

White Ward - Love Exchange Failure

Interesting. Black metal with soulful jazz type shit mixed in. The mellow, atmospheric stuff is more interesting than the heavy parts, but they're very good at crafting these mammoth long songs.

Deafheaven - Dream House

To be precise, a pro-shot live version from Hungary last October. I don't know what happened to George's vocals, but he sounds fucking AWFUL in this video. I think ten years of screaming like this with no breaks is starting to catch up to him, and he's only 31.

Saxon - Rock The Nations (LIKE it, but there's too many ballads!)
Diamond head - Death & Progress (This one grew on me further, great!)
Kingdom Come - In your Face (As Zep-Y as they were said to be!)
Wings - Venus & Mars
Steel Prophet - Book of the Dead

One of my favorite cuts off one of their best records. I listen to this when I think of friends that are gone.

Ozzy Osbourne - Straight to Hell

This song completely lost me the moment he started talking about making someone poop their pants.

Normally I don't care about bonus tracks, but this is such an exception. Intense riffing, medieval atmosphere....awesome!

Rush - Fly By Night

In honor of Neils passing I have been breaking out all of the old Rush that I wore out years ago. Listening to this old gem I never really thought about it, but I noticed Alex was a big fan of using delay quite a bit during this time period. On this album Anthem and By-Tor and the Snow Dog, make heavy use of the band stopping and the guitar notes repeating/echoing out. (Years ago I knew the proper term for this, but don't remember it offhand).

Alice in Chains - Dam That River

Hadn't played Dirt in a while. Basically their definitive album I suppose. All the hallmarks of their style.

"World of Glass" is very clearly the best of the post-Morten albums. I love it about as much as the first two albums, actually.

Frightmare - Bringing Back the Bloodshed

Death/Thrash/Grind full of great riffs. In fact I'd go as far as saying that this is one of the most (good-)riff dense albums I've ever heard. The samples used in some of the songs are pretty entertaining and never too long. Definitely recommended for fans of any of the 3 genres.
