I watched the trailer of Swamp Thing and it seems surprisingly horror-ish. Is it actually or is it just boo big monster?

The horror scenes are very horror, yes, and very well done. Unfortunately the dialogue is a different kind of horror...

Picard could have been amazing if it came on the heels of traditional Star Trek, but after Discovery the newfound darkness isn't as enticing anymore. It's baffling the way Kurtzman/CBS are going all in on Trek, renewing and commissioning shows left and right, yet they absolutely refuse to make even one of them traditional. Just hire Brannon Braga and Ron Moore for a Voyager style TNG clone, then make your Picards and Discoverys and hell, I might even be remotely excited to see a Section 31 show (as opposed to now, which imo is the single worst premise for a Trek show possible).

I still enjoy DSC and Picard but I don't love them. And the fact the next two shows scheduled are an adult cartoon and a Nickelodeon kids show, I'm not exactly inspired with confidence.

They say they can't make everybody happy but I don't know why not, traditional Star Trek has a fraction of the budget requirements that their bizarre new visions do, you can basically make an entire fifth season of Enterprise for the budget of a single Picard episode so it really shouldn't be any issue to go for it. The 1987-2005 shows had an average budget of $1.5 million per episode, even adjusted for inflation that's pocket change compared to their new shows.

Actually, DS9/VOY/ENT cost between $2.5-3 million per episode, which when coupled with the 26 episode seasons made the show budget unparalleled with other TV shows (not counting FRIENDS and Fraiser's insane late-series cast budgets). And TNG and TOS had extremely high budgets for their times, so Star Trek has always been ahead of the curve for this.

I didn't check, I just remember the number going around on TrekUnited back in the day, which isn't an official source of course. Still producing content of that quality with focus on dialogue and a small number of well-placed special effects should be peanuts compared to the new shows. Just keep a little budget on the side this time to avoid stuff like the recycled space battles from DS9 season 7 (probably can't find more than two dozen DS9 fans on the entire planet who didn't hate that.)

Has anyone else been following the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm? I would definitely say there have been stronger seasons, but this ones still pretty good. I really enjoy JB Smoove. Guy is hilarious.

The MAGA hat episode is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long, long time.

So Star Trek has caught up to 1990's comic books, forcing as much "darker and edgier" crap as they can muster. Sounds. Great.

Yesterday I watched probably the hammiest attempt at being Firefly ever. They all plan their heist on an Alliance planet in a very cut up montage type of way, then something goes wrong because some people unexpectedly knew each other and had an ulterior motive. We had the Romulan elf being Jayne, the guy who doesn't understand anything, got Picard and Logan jr doing Simon and Mal parts respectively, Raffi looks like Zoë already and Doctor Whatshername got to do a confused and stressed Kaylee part except technically inept, then it all goes wrong and Seven of Nine and that other woman go all Inara vs Saffron on each other trying to hurt each other with quips and glares.

Can't wait until Camina Drummer disposes of that dude really.

One thing I never really expected I'd say about season 4 of The Expanse is just how good and sensible and satisfying the Drummer and Ashford arc really turned out for me.

can someone who's seen The OA make me wanna watch it (no spoilers please)? I loved Brit Marling's movies and had kept the OA on the backburner for a while... finally watched the pilot yest and was not impressed. if it wasn't for Brit, I'd bin it straight away, but bcs of her, I want a second opinion... is it worth it?

The OA's second season was considerably better than the first, but I feel like the high school portion of the show bogs it down to varying degrees throughout. Marling's got a tremendous screen presence though and the main plotline and atmosphere of the second season were standouts to me. The first season has some effective thriller elements and the backstory that's explored is mostly well written and acted, but it's got a bit more of a melodramatic feel and the surreal elements are underdeveloped. Overall, the show was always a little inconsistent to me but I found its world to be enjoyable to partake in generally speaking.

I Am Not Okay With This felt like John Hughes re-wrote Carrie and then didn't want yo edit down too much, so it was turned into a 7-episode series. I loved it.

Avenue 5 is what The Orville wanted to be if it wasn't written by the guy who made Family Guy and denied the ability to make a Star Trek show.

Hilarious. Easily up there with Veep and TTOI/In The Loop.

Kim is maybe the most likable fictional character I can think of who's still ongoing right now.

Spoiler: show
Jimmy's moment in the first ep where he tries and succeeds at goading her into lying to that couple was one of his most piece of shit moves. He's a toxic person and it's very telling that he sort of inauthentically tried to play it off later and apologize.

Absolutely love BCS and I have already said I like it more than BB. Episode 3 was stellar. I particularly liked the beer on the balcony rail moment/symbolism. Like the beer is their soul, ethics, whatever you wanna call it or their relationship or both, smth like that. I am curious to see Kim's evolution and I agree she is an amazing character. Must say I didn't feel that Jimmy's idea of lying to the couple was his most piece of shit moves ever. Is he toxic? I dunno, just a resolved cynic and Kim is on the fence. She loves him, does not love what he is becoming but I think they both know how things are, they just haven't spoken about it yet; the beer on the edge and that stress from Kim's part really describes their relationship and how she feels about his new-self, so the end of the episode, where she kinda loses hope in humanity, when her real effort to help is thrown back at her face - and the bottle-throwing is an interesting development. Anyway, so far everything is perfect for me. Pacing, direction, character development, the absolute right amount of throwbacks and nostalgia and how to handle a prequel, just fucking stellar stuff.

Great to see Hank back too! Was waiting for that for quite sometime.

Also watched Locke and Key. Eh, not great, certainly not terrible, a weird mix really, but I liked the whole keys doing magic shit thing that I watched the entire season in a couple of days with the wife and it was quite enjoyable.

Started Altered Carbon season 2. Still like it and I have developed a soft spot for Poe, the AI.

Well what Jimmy did wasn't a conscious bad act, but he can't control himself - he just seems toxic in the way that he is an enabler and has no real moral center. He's an interesting character though, and the show has done wonderfully in making him three dimensional and even sympathetic over the years. But he is who he is. He's no hero.

Kim's feelings for him have always been fascinating to me. She likes him as a person, sure, but she doesn't act like most lawyers would because of her background in deep poverty - that's given her a kind of rebellious, fuck the man attitude that comes out, and Jimmy energizes that part of her like a battery. And then she sticks with him out of a kind of resolution to make it work, even despite her better high-brain judgments. It's very good character stuff I think.

I honestly did not expect BBC's Hitchhiker's 1981 Guide to the Galaxy to be THAT low budget. Like they've just thrown together a bunch of shit from the scrapyard. And the sound effects are just godawful, and they're so loud that you can't watch it at night because if you watch at a volume where the sound effects don't wake your neighbours you no longer understand what anyone is saying. Not that it isn't hard enough with that accent anyway. Obviously the story is good thanks to the source material but the production quality is really exhausting. I rarely have that problem even with very low budget or B movie type of stuff, but here it just takes a lot away from enjoyment.

I really try to be as open-minded as possible about Picard and not condemn it from the get go for being made by the same people as STD, and honestly in episodes 1-7 there have been some really enjoyable parts, some good character moments and some interesting story ideas. No real greatness that'll go down in Star Trek history, but some decent stuff that was nice to watch. Episode 8 however, what the hell was that? The episode basically put the audience on hold for week until they can think of more plot. All that happened was basically a recap of what we already learned in episode 7, nothing new whatsoever, just an hour of talking about stuff we already know from the previous episode and nothing at all happening that would be missed if this episode vanished in a hard drive crash at the CBS All Access main server. Complete waste of time.

It was definitely the most boring episode of the series, the amount of time wasting was ridiculous. Also, the Borg would not have a hand controlled 3D console interface, just a port for their nanoprobe tubules. Unless there's some big payoff with the captain and his holographic clones in the finale, this is the first genuinely bad episode of the series.

In other bad TV, what the hell happened to Altered Carbon and why does it suck so much now?

Unfortunately no (then again, I haven't been watching any new shows at all lately), but I'll take this opportunity to rant about its mothership show and just say that, while there are a few shows I feel are as good as Breaking Bad (Cowboy Bebop, for instance), there isn't a single one that I feel is better than it at all, so I can't agree with the retrospective criticisms I've seen saying that it escalated Walter's arc too quickly, or that it went too over-the-top with its more thrilling moments, like with what Walt did near the end of "Crazy Handful Of Nothin'", as that's just cherry-picking an outlier, IMO. I mean, besides being a great moment on its own, Walt never did anything that crazy again for the rest of the series, and the show as a whole never tried to just desperately shove crazy moments in our faces to keep our attentions, but measured them out extremely carefully at a pretty much perfect pace, and maintained a superb balance between those thrills, the razor-ship writing, the brilliant, vibrant aesthetics, and an incredibly deep well of emotion and constantly growing characters, and I feel like saying otherwise would be like acting like every episode of The Shield saw Vic doing something equally as bad as what he did in the pilot (when it very clearly did not).

So Altered Carbon did actually end up improving by the end. The first season was still superior, but this kind of TV isn't so much rare as it is basically non-existent, so perhaps beggars shouldn't be choosers.

Halfway through season one, Stargate SG-1 is really great, I love it so far. One of a number of shows I didn't watch back in the day because there was just so much sci-fi to choose from in that time period. I'll watch all ten seasons and if I keep enjoying it I'll watch the spin-offs, after that I'll locust on to the BSG reboot.

Yes, watch it! Watch it all! SG1 is a fantastic series, although later villains don’t have the same theatrical over-top-ness as the Goa’uld. As for the spinoffs, Atlantis is good. Personally I miss SG1’s pseudo-archaeology, but Rodney MacKay’s biting sarcasm makes up for it. Atlantis does get really derivative at times though. Carter literally says, “This reminds me of the time...” and the viewer is sitting there thinking “Indeed it does.”
Universe is dreadful though. All morbid and miserable, and it’s barely even a Stargate-based premise - they’re stranded on a ship. It’s like an unfunny Voyager.

We finished The Haunting of Hill House few days ago. Just picked it randomly from Netflix, and it's one of the best series I've seen in a while. Well acted, the atmosphere was great, and sometimes it succeeded at being truly frightening. The ending was probably the worst part about it, but that didn't change my general impressions.

Yes! SG-1 is definitely a favourite. The last couple seasons are kinda meh, but it had a really great and consistent maybe 6-7 season run. I think its strength was how flexible it could be in tone- "serious" scifi, action, totally camp humour. The whole cast is great but it could have never worked without Richard Dean Anderson.

For a showrunner that must have been the perfect show because you could be totally sci-fi with the cheapest most lo-fi sets ever because "it's a primitive civilisation." I'm halfway through season 2 by now by the way, still a really awesome show that I can't believe I missed out on back in the day. And on a side note I just loved how in the end of season 1, after the dramatic announcement that the Goa'uld are coming to attack, they are doing a clip show. You have TNG's "Shades of Gray" beat right there.

I watched the first three episodes of Tiger King two days ago and that was A+ human zoo entertainment. The craziest people in America are in the south, it's readily apparent by how they vote and worship, but holy fucking shit this 9000% confirms it. What a fucking sewer.

Yikes, that final episode of Picard... the farewell to a beloved character was touching and well done. Everything else was not.

Someone fire Kurtzman already. Preferably out of a cannon, but at least out of THE canon.

It's so wild and funny and odd but is actually as good as any true crime stuff. The whole thing paints a good picture of why everyone acts the way they do. It's well done.
