Nine years later and I'm still unsure if Opeth's Heritage is awesome or awful.

Theres actually a lot of good stuff going on in that cover. What possessed them to have their heads hanging from the tree, though... thats where this goes off the rails for me.

Yeah, and the head of the member who left the band falling... it's pretty awful.

It's not even so much the concept as the execution. I could conceive of it being done more artistically, with their heads seeming to more organically have grown out of the branches, and it could have some conceptual richness to it ripe with applicability to a theme. But instead it mars some otherwise intriguing artwork with what looks a highschool Photoshop project, haphazardly imposing layers of their visages and rendering them through a low-grain filter that looks more like excessively enlarged and blown-out thumbnails.

There's something insufferably egoistical about that album cover and what it seems to depict.

Agreed. But like other people have said, I definitely think it’s all coming from the heads. I hate those so much.

This looks like the album art equivalent to that one blobfish photo.

I've actually seen the back side of the porno video cassette involving a dino (prosthetics and all - I think?) pleasuring a woman when I was about 6 and out to rent a SNES game (wandered off to a whole different part of the joint).

My childhood really was great.

I like it as well, especially Mikael's explanation of everything going on in it. The music however is another matter.

Haha. It actually looks like something I would make to get a good basis for a drawing going.
Except they stopped there and slapped that crazy text on the bottom. Maybe the dead line came up on them like a truck!

I wonder if there is an explanation for this?
Ded Chaplin, Minoru Niihara's band between Loudness. One of very few examples of actual hair metal.

Then you should see Steeleye Span - Now We are Six.

Not sure if this one it's funny or sad. You decide.

I'm pretty sure Mike consciously or subconsciously had that one in mind as well as this one and combined them.

Sometimes I'm not certain whether progressive rock is the most or the least self-aware genre in existence.

I absolutely love this album, but I have zero idea what in the world this art is supposed to be showing.

I feel like prog metal bands really love the "screaming child photoshopped in" imagery more than any other genre.

It actually looks like he got his mother to help with the cover

What's interesting is, his other band, Dehumanized Deity, has mostly OK covers outside of the two 2019 releases. Music isn't amazing though, it's pretty rough.

80s metal bands do not age gracefully when it comes to aesthetics :/

I've always hated Spite - Antimoshiach. It's done by Adam Burke which is a super talented guy but it doesn't work at all. It's just damn ugly.

Wow. What a colossal failure of a cover. It might be acceptable, albeit hackneyed without the people, but their obviously Photoshopped addition is truly an eyesore.

Good lord. You might as well cut out a picture from a magazine and glue-stick it on top of the cover

Yeah that's come up here before, many times. A fairly infamous cover that is, and rightfully so.

I didn't see anyone mention Rok Bergade. Double whammy for them. Terrible spelling for the band name and awful album cover. I always thought whoever designed to logo for this band, came up with this. They thought it looked cool, so they just left it.
