I'm looking for vocals that are buried in the music on purpose and not as a result of a producer who didn't know what he was doing. Any genre recommendations welcome and below are a few examples, thanks in advance! :)

Is something like Tyranny (funeral doom) ticking any boxes for you ? The growls are so low they're basically another instrument.

My Dying Bride's "Le Cerf Malade" is a dark ambient track on the "Thrash of Naked Limbs" EP. I didn't realise it had vocals until I read the lyrics in the booklet, and I realised that they had been slowed down to become a background texture. It's a great effect.

Try with Spectral Lore, they play avantgarde black metal and the vocals are so in the background that you can't really tell what they are unless you pay real attention. Their album Gnosis is a perfect example of it (pretty good ethnic black metal, or something like that, by the way)

Vomitor is the first band that comes to mind, though the vocals are definitely less buried on their newest album. On Bleeding the Priest and their other two, however, the vocals are quite buried.

Vassafor comes to mind, very distorted vocals in the back:

Paysage d'Hiver does this too.

I feel that Hermóðr uses this approach very effectively on many, many recordings.

Here's just a couple songs that exemplify this:

First band/person I thought of was Xasthur. I always thought his vocals were very low in the mix. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3yIa5Wg6a4

Mortician is the first band that comes to mind for me. The vocals are so deep and buried behind the rest of the instruments that it's literally impossible to know what the lyrics are.
