I understand what you're looking for, I also find that aspect of Verdunkeln to be very cool. Sadly, it's hard to find anything close to that, since like I said black metal is most of the time not heavy, but trebly and cold.

The fusion of heaviness and black metal melodic guitars can be found in black/doom metal. What do you think of these songs from Forgotten Tomb and Bethlehem? They are not as heavy as Verdunkeln, but this is the closest I can think of.

If anyone can think of any other bands with a similar sound, I would also be grateful.

Thanks a lot for your help. :)
Yes, it seems that it's not easy to find bands/projects with this level of heaviness in black metal genre..
My main problem with this request is that I'm quite familiar with heavy + way too fast "a wall of blastbeats and no melodic riffs/solos" black metal stuff as well as with heavy + way too slow black/funeral doom metal stuff, but not really familiar with mid tempo or mid/fast tempo heavy-sounding black metal and black/doom metal stuff, so I'm actually looking for anything that's even remotely close to this kind of sound, heaviness, rhythm, and melodies.

Those heavy and powerful - sounding parts from the song "Scars" are indeed a very good example of a combination of heaviness and melody, and this kind of sound perfectly fits into the request. I actually knew Forgotten Tomb but had forgotten about them, thanks for reminding me.

The song "Schatten Aus Der Alexander Welt Subtitulado" is not so melodic, but the music is heavy enough and there are more intense rhythms, so this style also fits.

Ilwhyan wrote:
Check out Almyrkvi and Rebirth of Nefast for some of that heavy, doomy black metal.

I guess some of those relatively new/modern black metal bands/projects have a really heavy and powerful sound, but I'm mostly unfamiliar with this type of black metal.
Thanks a lot for the recommendations, I'll check them out in more detail. :)

Is Saor too obvious? I'm not an expert on Scottish bm, but check out bands similar to them.

I know Saor and Fuath etc. and I find them good but not great. A wee bit too polished or something...

I get what you mean, those bands are also not raw enough for me. Well, Scottish black metal doesn't seem that big. Hell, British black metal is not abundant in general.

It strange that, isn't it? Scotland especially seems like such a perfect BM place- wet, cold, miserable and beautiful.
I guess the're too busy drinking Irn Bru and taking heroin.

Definitely, English/Scottish folk BM has a huge potential IMO. At least we have the Irish.

For sure. The scene will come good in time, I have faith. And yeah, we(the Irish) are excellent. :)

In truth that isn't doing much for me. Maybe a bit to raw/demo like for my tastes. Thanks though.

It seems you are looking for epic black metal. Check out Elffor, Eldamar, Nazgûl. Also maybe Lustre.

Black metal with good basslines? Pretty open to all types of suggestions although raw BM is generally not my cup of tea.

Nidingr's latest two albums have some pretty memorable bass parts. Not raw in the slightest.

I'm listening to Greatest of Deceivers right now, and it has some really tasty bass playing.

If I'm not mistaken, Barathrum play with three basses. Check them out.

The French band Asmodee had often some cool, loud and quite intricate basslines, i remember liking their sophomore Simulacres. It starts fairly standard but gets crazier during the course of the album

Also there are of course the "classics" like Taake's first album and Ved Buens Ende's Written in Waters. To be fair any band Skoll played in has good basslines.

Hi All,

So I am looking for more bands that have a great winter black metal vibe to them. I already know of Paysage d'Hiver, Sorcier Des Glaces, Immortal and Evilfeast. Is there other bands you recommend that give a great wintery atmosphere? Looking forward to seeing recommendations!

Cheers!

Fuath - I
Vemod - Venter på stormene
Saor - Guardians

Were pretty much on constant rotation this past winter for me.

Some of the bleaker depressive black metal sounds really "cold" to me, e.g. Carved Cross - s/t and Mortualia - s/t.

Some of the more atmospheric/melodic bands like Aurvandil, Moonlight Drowns, Earth and Pillars, Mooncitadel, etc. sound very snowy.

Blut Aus Nord - Ultima Thule is the best of the best for me

Forest Silence is a side project of Sear Bliss.

The Force of the Ancient Land by Eldamar is a major favourite album of mine for wintertime black metal vibes. The first two tracks comprise one of my all-time favourite one-two punches of any atmospheric black metal album; track 3 is a chillingly beautiful acoustic arrangement; there's a great ambient track on this album; and the rest is pretty consistently enjoyable from there on out. Very easy album to get lost in.

In short, it's a great album for a walk in the forest on a crisp winter day - or for escaping into an imagined world of cold on unbearably hot summer nights, I suppose!

I merged your separate thread with this one, since we have this megathread for black metal recommendations, and want to keep requests of that type in there.

LOOKING FOR:
I get a huge kick out of Abigor - Fractal Possession and Balance Interruption - Door 218. I love the mix of electronic with extreme metal.
I think its a very careful balance that is also really capable of being too cheesy.

Abigor

Balance Int.

The new Vacantfield EP has some of this element to it. Lorn sort of touches upon the flavor, but more ambient. Thorns is awesome and so I guess thats a touch point, but Im mostly looking for more modern versions of that.
Thanks for any pointers! Apologies for being slightly vague!
