Picked up a copy of The Eternal Resonance by Sweven on vinyl. Excellent quality all around on this. One of my favorite albums of the year as well.

Sorry for the extremely large pic size. I couldn't be bothered to resize them.... so under the spoiler they go. (more detail never hurt anyone)

I've been on a Coroner binge lately, so that's definitely a great pick. They're the sort of band that reminds me that interesting riffs can more than make up for a lack of prominent melodies, and that there's plenty of great metal that's more than 30 years old, which I functionally tend to forget too often.

The release of TSHF was such a weird entry point for me to get into Megadeth. I was pretty late to checking out a full album of theirs, only having heard a handful or two of individual songs before then. It's quite an experience to hear Vinnie on the album, but it also proves that there's something about having a feel for the genre that transcends pure ability. He can drum circles around Menza, but it's not in his blood.

The last few weeks since my last post:

Indian Summer-Giving Birth To Thunder LP
Panopticon-Live Migration 2LP, clear w/orange and purple splatter
Canis Dirus-Independence To The Beast LP, bone white
Dream Theater-A Dramatic Turn Of Events 2LP
Dream Theater-Distance Over Time 2LP, silver w/smoke swirl
Jon Benjamin Jazz Daredevil-Well, I Should Have* (*...Learned How To Play Piano) LP, 2020 repress, red/white/blue
Mercyful Fate-Return Of The Vampire LP, 2020 repress, clear w/blue smoke
Mercyful Fate-The Beginning LP, 2020 repress, amber marbled
The (Dixie) Chicks-Gaslighter LP

The Panopticon is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. Sadly, the Canis Dirus is Bindrune's worst ever release.

I was mostly wrong about Mangini-era DT (save for The Astonishing and LaBrie overall)-though not flawless, these albums still rule. Mangini is a beast.

The Mercyful Fate stuff is supposedly either the 80's masters or possibly even the 80's stampers-essentially these presses are un-remastered, as it were. Melissa and Don't Break The Oath are getting the same treatment later this summer.

My copy of The Chick's record does indeed say "Dixie Chicks", so I guess some physical media was pressed before the name change. I wonder if it is now something of an instant collector's item.

Well, I've gotten some albums:

Slayer - South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Dream Theater - Distance Over Time
Razor - Violent Restitution
Carcass - Heartwork

I really wanted to buy Beneath the Remains and Arise, but I can only seem to find the deluxe editions that have a second disc. I don't want all that extra crap, I just want the albums themselves! Especially considering the price difference. But now Amazon.ca doesn't seem to sell the regular editions anymore.

Is that really over a whole hour of music on one LP? Admittedly I don't collect vinyl and have not much knowledge on it, but it seems all other albums approaching or exceeding one hour get but on two LPs in their vinyl versions, even if single disc in the CD version.

My latest physical releases are :

Darklon - Rise From Death(very good someone should review it on MA) for fans of US Power Metal

Ice Howl - Cadence Of The Cursed stoner metal/rock with video game lyrical themes. It's very very good recommended. Good production too! I also bought another album from this band, it was an EP and unlike Cadence it had some rough vocals whose fan I wasn't.

Mega Man X5 OST - MET this franchise has the best OST that can be very well metalised. But even the originals are amazing compositions. Check out Squid Adler and Zero intro stage.

Went music shopping with my wife, and generated quite a haul from local record shops (and HMV)

Pretty sure I've now completed my collection of the entire discography of 'The Bolshoi' (lesser known 80s goth rock band) :D

Ayreon - Electric Castle Live
Avantasia - Ghostlights
Malmsteen - Trilogy
Celtic Frost - Into the Pandemonium
To-Mera - Transcendental
Thunder (best of) - 3CDs for nine quid seemed like a good deal
Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
The Cranberries - No Need to Argue
Paradise Lost - Obsidian
Van Hagar - 5150
April Wine - Power Play
The Bolshoi - Please 7"
The Bolshoi - Happy Boy 7"
Taylor Swift - 1989

Some good stuff there. Ayreon's live stuff is always incredible. As amazing as the studio albums are, it's mind-boggling that he can coordinate events of that size and pull concerts off that are almost as good as the albums, which take months to arrange and execute. I was just watching some of the Ayreon Universe live album last night again and marveling at the scope of it. The ending of "The Eye of Ra" is quite a sight to behold. And To-Mera is super-underrated. Now that I think about it they're another of those groups that seemed to vanish. They really had a unique sound going for awhile.

I'm really looking forwards to the Ayreon one - I've seen one of the videos from it and loved it - so it's going to be wine-snacks-music evening. To-Mera I never listened to, so I'm glad I've chosen wisely !

I also ordered online a pair of Dark Princess demos to complete that collection as far as I can. I'll post those when they turn up & bathe in the shame

Hey, that's half the fun of it. The mainstream crowd doesn't understand the obscure stuff, and the kvltists are annoyed by the poppy acts, so I embrace both.

Great song isn't it? I believe it wouldn't be as good without the vocals of the Jansen sisters on the evil chorus. "Songs of The Ocean" is also very nicely composed.
