I've been going back and re-watching the X-Men Animated Series from the early 90's. It still holds up really well and is still able to keep me fully engaged. This show was so ahead of its time and there are still parts that make me tear up hard.

I've been enjoying the third season of Star Trek Discovery quite a bit. While I enjoyed the first 2 seasons well enough, I feel the third one is where the series finally go somewhere I really wanted it to. Details in spoilers:

Spoiler: show
By moving the story 900ish years in the future from the era they were in the first 2 seasons (a bit before TOS) opens creative writing and a lot of unknown possibilities without messing too much with Trek's lore (not that I care), it's hard to predict what will happen now. Even if some of the stuff is a bit farfetched and somewhat dumb (the Burn lol), it's intriguing.

What I'd like to see is some more focus on the Discovery crew and less focus on Michael. While she's a good character, ensemble cast is one of the things I like in Trek and this show didn't do that well so far.

Courtesy of working late last week, I got subjected to a binge of 'Emily in Paris'.

It's not as bad as the reviews made out - it's pretty generic movies24 rom-com stuff, just without Jennifer Aniston.

One thing it has going for it is that it's beautifully shot - it's not a studio / CG hackjob, they've really used Paris well in the making of it. If you want to look at Paris without having to deal with, well, Paris, it's great as a virtual holiday.

I didn't recognize it as him until I saw someone talk about it on facebook, lol. He was great though, hope we see more of him.

Binged Truth Seekers on Amazon Prime today. Only eight episodes in the season but I thought it was actually really well done. Plenty of characters to care about and just enough heart to keep you engaged. Also the comedic tone and horror references are spliced in just perfectly to compliment each other nicely. I definitely recommend it.

I'm also halfway through season 2 of The Alienist on Netflix. This one is heavy but I'm enjoying this one, too. Dakota Fanning is stealing the show on this series.

Supernatural, series finale
Season 15 was a fucking mess, right from the start. After the incredible closing of S14, the final season began with a series of weak "monster of the week" episodes that paled in comparison to even the lamer runs, like S10-S12. It wasn't until near the mid-season break, when COVID fucked everything up for everyone, that the episodes felt like they were actually building toward something again and, with the final season's story literally being the Winchesters taking on God Himself? That was a bad omen.

That all said, the penultimate episode tied the major story closed in the way that was hinted at a few seasons prior, but without anything close to the emotional resonance of finales like "Swan Song" (S5, still the greatest moment of the entire show) or even S14's epic cliffhanger (wonderfully set to Motörhead's "God Was Never On Your Side," of course). S7 even had a better conclusion and that is seen as the worst stretch of the series (though it introduced fan-favorite Charlie, played by Felicia Day, and one of the best overall villains in the entire show, Dick Roman).

The actual final episode, an epilogue for the series proper, is an emotional send-off that few other shows could come close to matching. This is entirely due to the journey up to that point and paying it all off. The only real negative I can say, beyond production issues (some weak makeup and effects, again thanks to a rushed production due to COVID), is that Kansas's "Carry On My Wayward Son," the anthem to the entire series, did not play in full. When a band understands the lasting legacy of its work is so intrinsically tied to another body of work, Kansas showed when they bid the show adieu, it would be most fitting to let the song play out in its entirety.

Overall, Supernatural is still a top 5 series for me. The great comes from how it played with the actual lore of the various cryptids and spirits that featured on the show; the overarching theme of the importance of storytelling; and, of course, the depth of the characters themselves. The awful comes from when the show, at the behest of the network and an eventual rotating door of showrunners, leaned too heavily into its own self-importance by trying to subvert itself one too many times, leading to later seasons feeling very directionless compared to the golden tier first five.

My favorite arc, though, was when Dean accepted the Mark of Cain, itself an allegory for leaning into one's destructive behaviors under the guise of them aiding in their success. Substance addiction and destructive behaviors were dealt with earnestly by addressing the mythology and treating it with respect, leading to the last great storyline of the show.

A worthwhile investment of your time now that it's all over, but be weary that the ending isn't going to be easy to sit through, for reasons related to both quality and whatever emotional attachment you may form with the various characters.

The Mandalorian intends to break the internet.

Spoiler: show
Everyone knew Ahsoka Tano was going to be in it eventually. But - "Where is your master", she demands of the woman she's fighting. "Where is Grand Admiral Thrawn?"

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Did not see that coming! They're going to introduce Thrawn!

I think this is the first time I've been excited about a TV show being cancelled. Amazon's Utopia needed to be put down, and Amazon wisely complied.

He has already been introduced on Star Wars Rebels, which has some pretty excellent episodes. Personally, I am hoping for Ahsoka and that whole storyline with Thrawn and Ezra Bridger etc to be a series of its own. If they put it in the Mandalorian it's basically going to overshadow the actual Mandalorian. But all that aside, the series is exactly what I wanted a modern Star Wars show to be.

So today JJ can watch a little lesson on how to get fan service in Star Wars completely, amazingly and incredibly right. Total win. And that's on top the huge development in the main story arc. It's a 10/10 from me this week.

Maybe I should give Mandalorian another chance. I made it halfway through the first season before giving up. I don't even think I made a conscious decision to stop watching, I just eventually didn't care enough about what happened next to continue. It wasn't crap, it was just pretty boring. I've heard the second season's a lot better, though. Would I even need to finish the first to go into the second?

Yes you need to, most of the story arc stuff happens there. And I don't see why you wouldn't, it's not like it's 1960s Doctor Who where you spend a week to watch one ginormous season, you can do it in half an evening.

Tremendous episode this week. Favreau has plotted an excellent course that threads right in between super Star Wars-y stuff that only long time fans would even care about, and just neato things than the casual fans can enjoy. And along the way, he throws some spackle at issues with the prequel and sequel movies.

Oh shit just looking for the main theme I noticed the entire score for every Mandalorian episode is available as audio. If you wanna know who the real star of that show is forget about Mando or Baby Yoda or Gina Carano whatever, it's Ludwig Göransson. Liked the score from the beginning but listening to it by itself I'm putting it in the same ball park as Conan the Barbarian.

10 years ago, if someone told me the best Star Wars since the OT would be a webseries for Disney's streaming platform by the guy who directed Iron Man, I would've called the DEA. But here we are. Second season is a big step up from the first, but the first two episodes while great to look at, didn't really advance the story much.

I actually love that they do episodic stories but in turn that leads straight to my main complaint with the series, the eight episodes per season. I love that they don't just do their main story arc like most boring shows nowadays but also mix in episodic stories and also mix in those pure fan service elements, but because of that really extreme limitation of runtime per season, as much as I appreciate all three of those elements by themselves, I always feel they're constantly eating away at each others' space. Even the ever so slightest increase to ten episodes per season would leave it all perfectly fine with room for everything.

I checked out Haikyu cause Drawfee told me to and I'm so god damn mad about how good it is. I've never watched a sports anime before because I mean...why would you? There are no swords or ninjas or anything rad. But uh, yeah, it totally rules. Super endearing writing, actual comedic parts, emotional buttons being pressed. So now I'm a guy who watches anime about high school volleyball.

There's plenty of great sports anime out there that don't require you to enjoy the sport (or sports in general). Hajime no Ippo, Ashita no Joe, Chihayafuru, Princess Nine, Big Windup!, Ping Pong the Animation, and so on.

but damn if the Mandalorian didn't un-nerf Boba Fett in 5 minutes or less. Crush 'em skulls, Boba!

It's been said, fairly I think, that the last 2 episodes of The Mandalorian were better than the last 5 Star Wars movies. Though I liked Rogue One.

Implying they weren't also better than the prequels, or is that a given?

Also, you should use spoiler tags for that stuff, S&P.

I added a spoiler to S&P's post even though I think all Star Wars should have seen the episode the day it was released!

It's a pretty good season so far because at least it's fun and enjoyable even though they're stretching the plot and it's mostly filler episodes. It's very good fan service!

First season had a lot more stand-alone episodes which I actually really liked, but the second one does a good job of pushing the main story forward while also giving room for cool side adventures. Best of both worlds I think, and not a single episode so far has felt like filler to me.

Personally, I thought Revenge of the Sith, despite some clunkiness, was probably the best of the feature films aside from The Empire Strikes Back, although Rogue One also has a reasonable claim there.

There's a British TV show my wife picked up on called "Misfits", in which a group of ASBO stereotypes get superpowers - hijinks ensue

Won't say too much, but if you like a bit of black comedy, whiff of sci-fi, and a touch of crime fiction, you'll enjoy this.

Three days ago I randomly decided to watch Stranger Things. Almost done now, in the middle of season 3. I don't regret the decision. Particularly love Winona Ryder playing Nicholas Cage.

Is Hollywood into secret cloning experiments, though? Mike looks like a young version of Adam Driver, Steve looks like a young version of James McAvoy and Nancy looks like a young version of the actress who played Stormfront in The Boys. That's just weird.

Season 2 has some of the better character work between the main cast and S3 has the coolest BBEG so far (revealed in the last two eps), but the first season is still the best. It works like an actual horror series more than a TV show and that's why it works.

Yeah all the modern serialised shows I've seen where the creators say it's like a long movie it's almost always horseshit and it's still just a TV show with the plot stretched out. Stranger Things on the other hand the "like a long movie" description is 100% spot on.

Can anyone think of a TV series made post-2010 that's mostly or entirely monster-of-the-week and isn't an anthology show, and it's actually good? I suppose Orville is close to that, though I found the show's dalliance into romance-of-the-week excruciating.

I watch a lot of TV shows and assuming you mean live action I got absolutely nothing. Even without the "and it's actually good" I got nothing. The Orville is the only one I know, and that's Star Trek Voyager level "most enjoyable and occasionally great to watch but I'm not joining the fan club."

Fringe maybe? Depending on how loosely we're interpreting monster-of-the-week.

Oh well it's 2008...

Hannibal was like that in the first half of the first season and it was the best part of the show, the more it went full story arc the more boring it got.

The sci-fi show Almost Human was 100% standalone, but I'm not sure if it counts because it was just a copypaste of Law & Order SVU but sci-fi. It also was pretty bad, despite starring Karl Urban and MacKenzie Davis (the creepy guy from the UK Office), who can both be awesome.

IDK maybe you'd like it drone, it has a really cool look but it's basically just a cop show with robots and (very good) CGI.

I blame the shift towards serialized storytelling mostly on 24 and JJ.

Not an entire run - they always go into badly written meta drama eventually (my wife & I disagree a lot on the necessity for 'character development') - but I'd say check out the first couple of series of Castle, if you don't know it ? - it's crime so not quite monster of the week literally, but most early episodes are totally self contained, with maybe the odd throw back reference here & there.

I'll look into Almost Human. I do love a lot of sci-fi, I even loved the original run of Star Trek Discovery when it was still called Dark Matter, before Alex Kurtzman remade it almost identically just a lot more boring.

I remember liking Almost Human okay, but I never finished it.
