There is a lot of shitty BDM out there, but it's hardly the worst metal has to offer. BDM and slam at its worst is still better than 99.9 % of that generic melodic metalcore horseshit.

Hot take: anything BDM or Slam do well, downtempo deathcore and deathcore in general does better. Bands like Distant and Bound In Fear have the crushing heaviness of Slam (and the slams) but with lyrics about more interesting subjects, actual atmosphere, and less repetition. It's funny how dxc started out as braindead, thuggish, and offensively vulgar as BDM and Slam, but has grown up and become a lot more mature whereas those two genres remain as meth-head-dipshit as they were back in 2005.

That's not a hot take because the whole genre of deathcore is equally as shit and cringeworthy as generic BDM and slam

I've never heard a deathcore band and ended up thinking "wow, they're really good!". There are bands that mix death metal and hardcore that do it well, but that's a completely different animal from deathcore.

I'm sure there are more examples.

Yeah, those are some examples of what I'm talking about. I think stuff like that is more frequent now as musicians are figuring out that there are other ways to combine hardcore and death metal without sounding like a stereotypical deathcore band. One might even say that deathcore has become its own thing with only loose ties to its parent genres, although I'm not sure I would go so far as to make that claim.

I consider myself a bit of a purveyor of BDM and Slam; I keep up with a bunch of the labels that specialise in the stuff and have been to plenty of live shows, knowing that lots of it will be hot garbage.

In fact, I'm spending this time in the Easter holiday to look back over the Sick Dog fest livestream festival from January to find some international bands to check out. There's been some gold like Posthuman Abomination and Harlequin but you don't wanna hear that. Here's been the total drivel I've put myself through:

Failed Virgin
Gangrenectomy
Ureterectomy
Zepelio
Bloody Sadism (But props for being a band from Iran, never seen that before. Shame it sucks.)
Neoplasia

There's a variety of things that these groups are missing in what I look for; Sloppy performances, lack of riffing variety, dull vocal performances, paper-thin production, plastic sounding drum machine, the list goes on. But what really makes me tire of a slam band quickly is something less tangible, it's when I get the feeling that this is 1-4 guys standing in a room, going through the motions. You can almost hear that they're bored playing this stuff, and it makes me bored.

On the other hand, look at Korpse. I don't even like them that much but when I listen and watch their music videos they're fucking moving andgrooving to this stuff, and I start doing so too.

I've got plenty of time to recommend the good stuff if people are looking for that too, I think there's a lot to love in this extremely narrow, brain-dead subgenre that more people should appreciate.

Bands like Animosity is what "deathcore" should have sounded like IMO.

Or something like this from 2004. Before the band got (in)famous for the new vocalist's stretched earholes and their sound changed dramatically:

I do like some of the current stereotypical deathcore bands (underrated for weightlifting), but barely any of them have actual "death metal" in them. Call it djentcore or something.

Okay dude, I've found it: Cuntectomy.

This is unabashedly the worst death metal/slam band on the Archives. Worse than Waking the Cadaver, worse than Car Door Dick Smash, even worse than Cemetery Rapist- this is a new low of terrible. Everything you hate about really bad slam death/gore metal is encapsulated in this one terrible release. Juvenile incel lyrics and song titles, inane stupidity, obnoxious barnyard vocals, obnoxious drum programming, terrible riffs (if you can even call them that.) Plus, this band seems to have more releases over the past year than Slo...er, I mean, a certain "Band" that we don't speak of. Whose daily output of recorded static was honestly more interesting (and pleasant) to listen to than this.

If Car Door Dick Smash, WtC and Cemetery Rapist are the low benchmarks we're undercutting here, you can't be trying very hard. Those projects are practically professional sounding compared to some. Yeah Cuntectomy is worse. The worst? Doubtful. For one thing, you can hear the instruments, mostly. That immediately takes it off the bottom.

STDizzle's got the right idea. Especially about the worst bands having that intangible boringness about them. At least Cuntectomy man sounds like he's having fun.
