I'm thinking i may start an alternative thread in the metal section for just metal, but I thought this could be interesting.

So with covid, Trump's entire farce of a presidency, all the race issues/riots, George Floyd, etc etc, the past 4 years and change have had insane amounts of political bullshit, and usually when you have periods like this, for example, the 60s/70s with Vietnam, you will have a lot of provocative art and music come out of all the anger.

However, and I'll admit i don't really have a great awareness of a lot of different music scenes outside of metal and a little punk, or a great knowledge of art, I don't see this happening on the scale I'd have expected.

I watch all kinds of movies, especially horror movies and various documentaries, and I think I have probably seen some horror influenced by the past 4 years, but I can't remember off hand.

In terms of visual art, I don't look at enough of it, and I'm always telling myself that i'm going to look at more painting, etc.

Then there's other mediums for art like photography, sculpture, and all other sorts of art I know nothing about, etc.

So, what music and/or art have you guys observed lately or in the past 4 years that you think has been influenced by recent events (starting with when Trump was first elected up to the present)? It could have to do with covid, Qanon, anything Trump did, the insurrection, racist police shootings, etc.

I'm especially interested in metal and punk music with lyrics influenced by these years, and I would really think that there would be a lot of angry punk music about the era we live in, yet I hear very little.

What do you guys think: has there been more than I've noticed coming out, or do you think it's the kind of thing where it's happening right now but we just haven't had time to assimilate it all and we'll recognize more of it looking back years later?

Sticking to just the last year - honestly, most of the Academy Awards field this year in one way or another is politically charged, or inspired/driven by the culture of the world today.

Judas and The Black Messiah
Nomadland
Promising Young Woman
The Trail Of The Chicago 7
One Night In Miami
The United States vs. Billie Holiday
Borat
Da 5 Bloods
Collective (Documentary)
Time (Documentary)
Do Not Split (Short Doc)
Hunger Ward (Short Doc)
A Love Song For Latasha (Short Doc)
Two Distant Strangers (Live Action Short)
If Anything Happens I Love You (Animated Short)

I'm probably even missing a few, but many of these were inspired by/touched upon issues related to politics/BLM/the failures of governement/class division/civil rights/privilege/law reform.

Borat 2 is pretty scathing of an indictment of all that Trump shit.

Sorry to Bother You is a wild 'fuck you' to the racism and capitalism issues that people have talked about.

The film 'Us' is a labyrinthine tale of political allegory.

The new Pharaoh album coming out is supposed to have lyrics centered around the evils of capitalism, MAGA, etc.

Run the Jewels' RTJ4 has some really politically angry, wrathful verses.

This is the best thing that has come out of recent politics: Nuclear Power Trio

^^^^^^^

That was pretty good, and i like all the suggestions of documentaries, but what about some more punk rock and metal with lyrics influenced by our times?

I mean especially when it comes to punk rock I'm surprised there hasn't been more.

I'd like to see some blackened crust with references to all the crap coming out of the past 4 years.

Political protest music seems to have greatly diminished in the past decade or more and people just take to social media to excoriate their foes. All the punk bands who were "rocking against Bush" suddenly grew quiet even when Obama continued many of Bush's worst policies, and even though the last four years whipped everyone up into a frenzy it didn't seem to generate a whole lot of art. I don't see this shifting in the near future either. But quite frankly I'm rather thankful for it. Politics permeates way more of life than it did a decade or more ago, and it just gets exhausting when there's no respite from it.

I can think of a few examples of local bands here, particularly punk ones. The front covers of Unsanitary Napkin's releases make them a very obvious example. There's also The Stungrenades.

Wax Chattels - Clot has a bunch of political songs. Cede is influenced by Chinese politics and the situation of Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Uyghurs, while An Eye is about police brutality, both in Hong Kong and the West.

Hip-hop album Hypernormalisation is most likely inspired by the documentary of the same name.

The last Bad Religion album, "Age of Unreason", is quite obviously inspired by the Trump administration. It's not my favorite BR album necessarily, but it's pretty good.

Not sure if this is specifically about the conditions you mention but it surely does touch on the things that became even more apparent in the past 4 years.

Get Dead - Confrontation

Spoiler: show
FUCK the left FUCK the right
FUCK the conservatives controlling the kids
FUCK them liberals that take it all so literal
Mass manipulation

They found a way to split us up
Pit us up against each other
By dissecting human beings
Divide us up into subgenres
Seems that these things are not fading

How would we know the rules have changed
When we’ve never played the game?
When did this place become so lame?
This cannot be the only way

Knock a swazi off a Nazi
Kill your TV. Go kamikaze
Throw a rock. Start a riot
Fight a cop light a fire
Shoot at anything that moves
Don’t forget they’re all liars

They build walls we’ll build ladders
They lock us up, it don’t matter
One go down
Two pop up
Three eyes watch four lies
Live at five o’clock

Knock a swazi off a Nazi
Kill your TV. Go kamikaze
Throw a rock. Start a riot
Fight a cop light a fire
Shoot anything that moves
Don’t forget they’re all liars

So sick of the apologies
The thoughts and the prayers
The profits from the misery
Look at yourself now
Only one to blame
Look at yourself now
Only one to blame

Someone’s got a gun
Knock a swazi off a Nazi
Kill your TV. Go kamikaze
Throw a rock. Start a riot
Fight a cop light a fire
Shoot anything that moves
Don’t forget they’re all liars

Body Count - No Lives Matter

Spoiler: show
It's unfortunate that we even have to say 'Black Lives Matter', I mean, if you go through history nobody ever gave a fuck
I mean, you can kill black people in the street, nobody goes to jail, nobody goes to prison
But when I say 'Black Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter'
That's like if I was to say 'Gay Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter'
If I said, 'Women's Lives Matter' and you say 'All Lives Matter'
You're diluting what I'm saying, you're diluting the issue
The issue isn't about everybody, it's about black lives, at the moment
But the truth of the matter is... they don't really give a fuck about anybody
If you break this shit all the way down to the low fucking dirty-ass truth
We say that 'Black Lives Matter'
Well truthfully they really never have
No one ever really gave a fuck
Just read your bullshit history books
But honestly it ain't just black
It's yellow, it's brown, it's red
It's anyone who ain't got cash
Poor whites that they call trash
They can't, fuck with us
Once they realise we're all on the same side
They can't, split us up
And let them prosper off the divide
They can't, fuck with us
Once they realize we're all on the same side
They can't, split us up
And let them prosper off the divide
Don't fall for the bait and switch
Racism is real, but not it
They fuck whoever can't fight back
But now we gotta change all that
The people have had enough
Right now, it's them against us
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
America's always been
A place that judge my skin
And racism is real as fuck
Ain't no way to play that off
And in the eyes of the law
Black skin has always stood for poor
This is basic shit
They know who they fucking with
They can't, fuck with us
Once they realise we're all on the same side
They can't, split us up
And let them prosper off the divide
They can't, fuck with us
Once they realize we're all on the same side
They can't, split us up
And let them prosper off the divide
Don't fall for the bait and switch
Racism is real, but not it
They fuck whoever can't fight back
But now we gotta change all that
The people have had enough
Right now, it's them against us
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
You never see them pulling rich people Out of their cars in their neighbourhoods because they know they got lawyers
They know they'll sue their ass, they can tell who to fuck with
Unfortunately, black or brown skin has always meant poor
They're profiling you kid, They know you can't fight back but we about to
"Investigators say they are reviewing body camera and dashcam video of Tuesday's shooting"
"Police say that Keith Lamont Scott did have a gun in his hand when an officer shot him"
"But a new picture of the scene shows something at Scott's feet"
"A source tells our Charlotte affiliate it may be a gun"
"But people in the neighbourhood say the father of four was holding a book instead"
"Officer Vinson was in plain clothes when the shooting happened"
"He was not wearing a body worn camera but we are told that three other officers wore theirs"
"The department is under increasing pressure to release police videos from the shooting"
"But the police chief says, he will not do that right now because of the investigation" (ladies and gentlemen, this shit is deeper than racism)
Don't fall for the bait and switch
Racism is real, but not it
They fuck whoever can't fight back
But now we gotta change all that
The people have had enough
Right now, it's them against us
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter
This shit is ugly to the core
When it comes to the poor
No lives matter

Soft Power by Tropical Fuck Storm fucking smokes and everyone should give it a shot. Highest of the highly recommended.

Chameleon Paint too man. This band can do no wrong in my eyes.

Surrounded by Fucking Idiots by Oozing Wound could be interpreted as inspired by the modern climate as well.

Zeal & Ardor (soul/gospel/metal hybrid) released an EP named Wake of a Nation, with tracks like Tuskagee and I Cant breath, so its pretty topical. It´s alot more serious than the bands previous offerings, both musically and lyrically.

They never really caught on with me in the studio but I saw a live performance online and it was amazing! And I usually don't like live or studio.

Algiers have always felt very politically charged to me. "Post-Punk, Post-Industrial, Gospel, Soul, Noise Rock, Punk Blues".

Michael Kiwanuka's Hero is "dedicated to civil rights activist Fred Hampton, a 21 year old Black panther murdered by the police in 1969" and is sadly still relevant today. A modern song about an old problem that is still familiar.
