Helloween - Kill It

'Gambling' was always just so fun to listen to - the production is like an electric shock, the riffs are energetic as fuck, Andi Deris maybe never sounded better.

Fuck, I need to get onto listening to some Helloween soon. One of those big, classic acts I've never found the time to really give a fair shake.

Wreck of the Hesperus - The Sunken Threshold

Found these guys on RYM when someone compared them to Sweden's Abandon, though they almost sound like Thergothon with no keyboards or phaser and a thick, sludgy bass-tone. There's some seriously fucking nasty riffs on track 2. Loving this.

Never too late to try 'em...

Helloween - Silent Rain

Keeper III is still my favorite by em. I believe this will come to be seen as the masterwork it is. It's everything this band was ever about.

Tad Morose - Modus Vivendi

What an album. This can sit beside the best from Dio, Queensryche, Metal Church, Savatage etc. Powerful vocals, riffs and songwriting, this is pure class. Why aren't they huge???

I know... probably because they didn't have any albums for 10 years after that. That shit always ends up killing off momentum I guess.

This may be silly, BUT I think that NAME didn't help them!

DevilDriver - Trust No One

Caught them on this tour. They are a killer band live. I like this album quite a bit.

Metal Church - Four Hymns demo '83

Very cool demo that features a couple of ace rare tracks "Death Wish" and "The Brave", also early versions of "Battalions" and the awesome "God's of Wrath".

Brainstorm - Escape the Silence

New single, solid and dependable as always. I don't think these guys ever quite topped Metus Mortis/Soul Temptation, but there's something to be said for how long they've managed to consistently put out 7/10 stuff. I hear a significant Orden Ogan influence on this track, especially the chorus.

Yes - Long distance runaround

I've always wanted to explore most of their music because I had a strange feeling I'd really enjoy it if I really took the time to explore.

Turns out I was right because I randomly put Fragile on the other day and I actually really enjoy it.

Bruce Dickinson - Inertia

Skunkworks always finds its way into my playlists once in a while. A strange curiosity of an album.

Devin Townsend Project - Planet of the Apes

The section with Tommy Giles Rogers is one of the best guest appearances on a metal album ever, and that is my hill to die on for the day.

Well this came out of nowhere, I was sure that this band was all but dead at this point. Good to know they are still making music!

Opeth - Sorceress

Oh gods, this album has tested me. I felt that urge today I get like every 15 months to give it another try, and after an unholy amount of bass cut and treble boost on my new(ish) stereo amplifier...

...I think I actually started to like it...

EDIT: And I am pretty bewildered to see that none of the 7 reviews of the album mention how much of a ear-thumping bass overkill trainwreck the production is, with some even praising it. Either both the CD and vinyl I listened to are faulty, or there's something I don't understand here.

Warlord - War in Heaven

This is the worse version of this song. The Lordian Guard version had computer drums, cheesy keyboards and a goofy singer, but still it had so much more spirit. I ordered the Lordian Guard anthology CD on the other day, just waiting...

However, the quite delicate intro here is being overpowered by my wife blasting WASP outside while she's gardening  **plinky BM intro keyboard noises broken up with L.O ! V.E ! All I needs my looooove machineeeee.....**

Helgrind - "Demon Rituals"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrMY8kk-PkE

It sounds like a fusion between Incantation, Burzum, Demoncy and Baphomet. The tracks are pretty short (between 1 and 3 minutes) sort of like Grindcore, but this is better than most Grindcore (Repulsion and Terrorizer excluded).

In The Woods- Wotan’s Return

Great album (Heart of Ages) and I like how they explored and experimented with some progrock/Pink Floyd psychedellic atmosphere with black metal. It’s been ages since I heard this last.

Katatonia - In Silence Enshrined

I love how unrestrained this song is. The section around 1:00 sound like Metallica around the Black Album era, then around 3:50 we get this sweet keyboard line over the gothic riffs like Tristania or Theatres des Vampires, and then finishing off with a galloping drum section with twin-guitars like fucking Maiden around 4:40!
This is the unrestrained songwriting of young people being creative.

Prodigy - Prisoner Of Your Own Soul

This is like every box ticked possible for USPM, over the top as fuck - but it works and this is a seriously bombastic listen.

Helstar - Conquest

James Rivera sounds so fucking good on this.

Vader- Sanctification Denied

That Vader thread made me go back and listen to Solitude in Madness again. Just so much OOMPH in that album. God damn there's so much power in Peter's vocals. It's like if Blood of Kingu had a baby, this song would be it.

Fuckin' A. While its not Litany its shorter punchy writing makes me think of it.

NP - Anthrax - Time (Wacken 2020 livestream)

Maybe could use some editing down a bit on this album but long "neo prog" thrash was in vogue. Charlie is a beast.

Mastodon released a new song for some DC Comics event. Could be the single most boring Mastodon song, luckily only 3 minutes long.

Samael - Door Of Celestial Peace

Have you ever wondered what you really want
When it all comes down, it comes down to this
Have you ever wondered what you really want
When it all comes down, it comes down to this

IMO, this is Samael's finest hour! Enormous song, enormous vibe!

New Model Army - These Words

'The Love of Hopeless Causes' is really becoming a new favorite album for me in general. Everything about it works from the rootsy hard rock of the music to the great poetic lyricism about disarray and modern life. The best lyrics are always the ones that are just vague enough that you can really dig into them, more personal experience and reflection than any straightforward creed.

At first I thought you were talking about that electronic/industrial U.K. band Prodigy I got excited cause I used to like them a lot with their Fat of the Land album back in high school in the 90’s. Guess I was wrong you probably don’t listen to shit like that.

Elysian Blaze - The Temple is Falling

First time listening to this band after seeing a lot of praise or mention around the board. I don’t know nothing about them and I haven’t read any reviews yet. I like it it’s kinda doomy with a nice atmosphere but the production of the vocals is too low I barely hear it. I’m looking for more riffs or blasts too. I’ll try couple more songs or the whole album.

I’ll be posting a lot like this with new bands and new music I’m trying to get into so I hope you all don’t mind.

Cryptic Shift - Moonbelt Immolator

Tech thrash/death doing a 2112-type epic with all the nuances of Voivod upheld. It's sorta perfect really.

Majestic Downfall - Roberta

I'm sure this new record will be a grower - but so far I'm already hooked. The compositions might be long, but there's enough subtle variety that keeps me hooked, not to mention the balance between melody and punishing riffs seems to be on point so far.
