Rhapsody - Emerald Sword

One of the most fun songs I've ever seen live - especially as it was in a tiny club - everyone singling along, current band really into it, ah great fun.

Coffin Breath - Marching into Lethargy

Occult sounding doom/death metal that also features a good ol' dose of heaviness - it's like Sumerian Cry-era Tiamat meets Spectral Voice or something.

Deafheaven - Ordinary Corrupt Human Love

Bought this on a whim today since I found it in a record shop. This band really changed some shit up since Sunbather, huh.

Sleater Kinney - Path of Wellness

Sounding good so far. Warm summery rock grooves and great hooks that you feel in the gut.

Metallica - Bleeding Me

Perfect song structure for the theme, its a wheel that keeps turning and ends up where it started. Maybe the most honest lyrics Hetfield ever wrote going off what I read of that era of the band. Great bass, and honestly I think Lars did a great job on this whole album, not fully of double bass or crazy fills but its not really set for that. A lot of wah from the King of Wah.

Agreed. Still one of my favorites from Rhapsody.

Drudkh - Forgotten Legends

Drudkh's first two album are still their best.

AFI - Back From the Flesh

Their new album, "Bodies", has a very noticeable flaw to it -
A lot of these songs build and build, and then proceed to end in a very anticlimactic way.

Melechesh - Incendium Between Mirage and Time

Hard to say whether this or Epigenesis is their best; this one has the rich, complex songs with tight metal aggression and Epigenesis is more of a sprawling varied epic. Two great sides of the band. They're about due to a new one and hopefully it expands their sound some more again.

Paradise Lost - From the Gallows

Someone should tell Greg to look up and use more of his old cassettes...this sounds like classic Paradise Lost.

Amaranthe - The Game

Oh my God! Amaranthe made a fun song! After 2014! Too bad most of the album is still shit, though.

Therion - The Beauty in Black

I like the atmosphere of this song, but they did this style better on "Theli" (and several albums that followed it). That being said, I do like the thrashy-doomy-deathy-gothy sound of this very hard to define album!

Well, fuck. I just lost.

Amaranthe - BOOM!

Oh...oh no...they didn't "accidentally" delete this the moment it was completed? Oh nooooo...

Psychotic Waltz - Into the Everflow

Probably should play something today. This is as good of a choice as any.

Machine Head - Rotten

Sounds like the new material is living up to Flynn's promise of being more brutal than ever before. Still his vocals have declined since 2011, though it is used pretty well at times here.

Novembers Doom - The Jealous Sun

Those female backing vocals in the distance really lift this to the skies.

Sleater-Kinney - Bring Mercy

Probably AOTY, or pretty close anyway, for me right now until Pharaoh comes out next week - then we'll see.

Sepultura - Antichrist

Finally picked up Morbid Visions + Bestial Devastation.

Some good riffs and songs but man this band got better on the next few.

Deafheaven - Honeycomb

Funny to think of all the vitriol this band used to get. This is cool. Some acrobatic drumming, engaging songwriting, interesting guitar melodies. The aesthetics are very hipster-y but in a way I like. The following song "Canary Yellow" I really like actually - searing hypnotic waves of sound.

This is kind of weird to be playing so early, but I dig it. There's a lot of moods and textures to this and it goes through a lot of parts. Expansive stuff. Very cool.

Coheed and Cambria - Three Evils (Embodied in Love and Shadow)

This song is basically Jimmy Eat World but with weird (and somewhat violent) scifi lyrics.
It's also one of my favorites by this band, so there's that too.

NP: Bosse-de-nage- A Subtle Change

You know.... American black metal is a lot like american beer. It has a lackluster reputation due to a few big names but it's actually produced the best of it's kind in the world for the last 15 years or so..

Metallica - Shortest Straw.

Been trying to get this older vinyl cleaned so spinning it. This album holds a special place as it was my first "new" Metallica album. I had first heard Puppets but this was the new album that came out right after I discovered them. So it was the one I got to get in on the ground floor on. Yeah the mix is pretty bad and the bass is not there but its cold tone does fit the music. Lars has some nice drumming on this cut. And Hetfield sounds angry as fuck, I think this was his peak as a thrash vocalist just viscous and spiteful. This is album is a riff fest. I just wish we could one day get a remix. I've heard fan mixes that take the bass up too high, or redo the basslines and add them in. I think I read they don't really have the original master tapes but that may be wrong. Oh well, nostalgia time.

Sonata Arctica - Unia

I still maintain this is brilliant, but years later I can see how weird it was for them to follow up fucking Reckoning Night with this. It just happened to be the first new one they released that I heard when I'd gotten into metal. But I still love these dark, intense, complex songs. They're wrathful and beautiful at once. Kakko's imagination is absurd to make such a leap in style but it works for me anyway.

Slipknot - Gematria (The Killing Name)

Have a lot of great nostalgia for this album... pretty underrated to say the least. Slipknot's Pantera phase was a lot of fun!

Burning Witches - Flight of the Valkyries

New album from my favourite cross between Manowar and modern Priest. More good stuff if you like that kind of thing, and the vocalist has really turned it up a notch now.

Prog metal featuring a couple ex-Spiral Architect members. Reminds me more of Scariot than Spiral Architect. One song in, but this has promise.

Fates Warning - Fata Morgana

Incredible how this talent was so robust here and carried over into 'Winter Ethereal' decades later. Just a great fucking band. Rich and complex but also just fucking heavy and entertaining.

Lorna Shore - To the Hellfire

Apparently people into this kind of stuff are raving about this song. I don't get it. It just makes me want to listen to Shadow of Intent instead.
