Listened to the few covers released so far.

Sam Fender (Sad But True): Couldn't make it through. No bite, boring, slow as fuck, more boring than the ballads on the original, and it's one of my favorite song on the album. Don't know who you are, Sam Fender, but you suck. 1/10, because I expect there will be worse songs on the album. But this is close to Lulu levels of bad.

Jason Isbell (Sad But True): Not my cup of tea AT ALL!!! But, it's not boring, I'll give them that. I wouldn't listen to that voluntarily and don't know anyone who'd like it, but if it played in the background, you could do much worse and it's an honest effort. 6/10.

St. Vincent (Sad But True): Now that's more like it. This one's decent, I can see myself putting it in a playlist to listen to with the girlfriend. Good voice, didn't know St. Vincent before. 8/10.

Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Yoyo Ma and co. (Nothing Else Matters): OK, I'm surprised. I don't like Miley at all as a celebrity or as an artist but she gave a good performance and it was an interesting take. I was really prepared to hate it, so I'm almost disappointed I didn't. My reserved hate went to Sam Fender. Booh. 7/10, could have ranked higher but I don't very much like the original - if I put on Metallica it's not to listen to fucking ballads!

Juanes (Enter Sandman): Bwerk. What the fuck is that intro? It gets better once the song enter its groove but even so, I almost stopped it. The choppy part is terrible. Not boring, but annoying and not sure what they really tried to accomplish here. 2/10.

So it's not for me but I'm surprised I liked two of those and didn't hate the Jason Isbell one. A better start than I anticipated.

Not so sure the other way. I wouldn't want it to be something obvious like Mama Said or Nothing Else Matters, but King Nothing comes to mind. Now that I'm really thinking about it, Bruce's gravelly voice might sound amazing on The Thing That Should Not Be.

not a fan of The Boss, but I think he's too self-absorbed/important to tip his hat to someone like metallica... you can always cover the Lovecraft song in your own gravelly voice or whatever it was you used in that video with the chair in the forest :D

Really the boss, pretty sure it's the other way around. He has humility, pretty sure Metallica does not.

Spoiler: show
storytime: a few years ago, Brucie was invited to play London Hyde Park. big park spot in the city centre, near the wealthiest neighbourhoods. another band who shall remain nameless had played a gig there shortly before and the residents complained about the noise. ergo, the city council (the mayor) imposed a strict curfew and a dB limit.

all this was communicated to Brucie before he flew over.

all this was repeated to Brucie, and all his similarly self-important band members (four guitarists I think, two keyboard players, backup singers/dancers, a horn section, the lot), on the day of the gig.

Brucie takes the stage late.

Brucie proceeds to play a long set, exceeding the curfew, and then he pulls out Paul McCartney on stage (google him, he's sort of a big deal).

Brucie laughs.

Brucie reckons "eff those darn brits and their curfews, they aint gonna pull the plug on their own Macca".

the police pull the plug.

Brucie cries like a child.

humility? nope.

just so I don't derail this thread (much), here's another cover:

Yeah Jason Isbell is a cool dude, one of the "modern" country artists doing it right. You guys should check out Southeastern

Southeastern is one of my favourite records of the 2010's. So glad I saw the band on that tour.

Southeastern is one of the most soul-crushing singer/songwriter records I've ever heard. One of the very few emotionally-charged records I've heard where I feel the feeling in the songs. Great music too.

I saw Isbell and the 400 Unit live on the Nashville Sound tour. An amazing live show. Might be one of the closest studio/live sound ratios I've ever heard.

I must listen to the Sad but True cover. Probably the only cover from this compilation I'll check out, besides the Phoebe Bridgers one. Generic sadgirl Metallica might be fun too.

I think it's fine. The only dumb section is where it transitions into the real song, that made me laugh.

The comments there are terrible lol, is a not-so-good-to-begin-with butt metal song warranting this backlash from the average metalheads?

So lets see if I'm understanding this correctly. You think Wherever I Roam is a not good butt metal song but you think that cover is fine... fuckin hell.

Yeah I don’t really get the intense hate. Bandwagon shit without an ounce of original thought. Yeah they experimented a lot from 1996 to 2011 but Death Magnetic and Hardwired are overall pretty killer albums to my ears. Maybe just don’t listen to the stuff you don’t like?

could they have possibly picked a more boring album to limit submissions to? what's the point of novelty covers if the only thing they can cover is the band at their safest and sleepiest? i want to see death grips screaming trapped under ice and sam smith weeping over disposable heroes

I think both are just ok. The Balvin one is just an average trap song, nothing to warrant the intense backlash it's getting.

Between this video and Dave Mustaine's GibsonTV Icon's episode, I'm really hoping both these dudes make appearances at the 40th anniversary shows in San Fran in December. I'll lose my mind if Jason comes on stage to play the three songs he wrote with the band.

I love how Idles obviously just took a song they already had lying around and shoehorned James' lyrics into it.

Just heard the Howard Stern-Miley Cyrus-Nothing Else Matters-thing.

o_O

In other words: Letting somebody else sing Hetfield's vocal lines brings to light how primitively chavvy they actually are, especially if that somebody tries to imitate the Het's limitations.
Oh boy!
Now playing some nice old Dark Angel to dissipate the nightmares.

Love PUP, I think they're one of the best punk bands going at the moment, but I think I have to give their rendition of this a few more spins before I know how I actually feel.

I am a huge Pup fan, but their cover kinda did nothing for me. I am a huge Phoebe fan, and I really wish she would have covered a song other than NEM. I wish it had been something less-on-brand.

Honestly, I haven't listened to the most of the these covers, but the only ones I've been into are

Sandman by Rina
Sad But True by St. Vincent
The God That Failed by Idles

Slipknot is good, but if it’s just Corey Taylor attempting to rap, I have to say no.

Metallica should use their vast wealth, to put on a metal festival, with only the truest, best bands, with a bias towards really underground ones. Yes, I understand they will never do this. Yes, I understand that /.../

I liked the concept of the "Big 4" tour back in 2010-11. Do that again but add underground-but-upcoming bands
to the line-up to give them exposure (and some other band to fill Slayer's slot... Annihilator?).

I really like Miley Cyrus' singing on Nothing Else Matters - I think I like this version better than the original song (not that I cared for the original song much anyway)
