Just remembered a very obvious recent example: The version of Worship Music by Anthrax with Dan Nelson singing instead of Joey Belladonna. They recorded the album and finished it, then they fired Dan Nelson (or he quit, depending on who you believe), deleted his vocals, and changed the arrangements of some of the songs as well before getting Belladonna back. That version of the album is very possibly sitting on a hard drive somewhere, almost certainly never to be heard again.

One I just learned about: The original first half of Physicist by Devin Townsend. Devin related on his podcast last year (which I'm only just listening to now) how he took some of the money he made from Infinity and bought a "modest" studio setup, part of which included a 24 channel Roland recorder with a hard drive built in, a new thing in the late 90s when this album was being tracked. As he was unfamiliar with the recorder, he accidentally erased the entirety what had been recorded so far, which amounted to the entire first half of the album. He had to redo everything, he was not into it anymore, and that's a major reason why the album sounds the way it does.

Yes, they recorded a full prog death album before Heritage. I know that Mike mentioned it in some interview, sadly I don't remember which one.

Just over 10 years ago i would read the threads here and watched that YT Ancient video of one of their early show where they set the stage on fire while attempting firebreathing . Its was just a part of a show but got me laughing out loud a few times. Now i tried to re watch that video over the years but for unknown reason it was taken off yt some years ago and i researched it with no luck.Still id watch it again.

Whatever happened to the material Absu were working on while Mellissa Moore was still in the band? I know she stopped them putting any of it out when they kicked her out of the band but has it ever surfaced? If only they weren't such massive assholes...

The villainous demon Doviculus from Brutal Legend was originally voiced by non-other than Ronnie James Dio, but he was replaced by Tim Curry at some point in development. If I remember correctly, he finished recording all his parts before he was replaced too. Man, it'd be fucking awesome if they released those vocal tracks.

Word is that Absu album that is coming out is the re-recording of the album Melissa did for them.

Mayhem's Budapest Sessions were never available to the public. Supposedly, there was a full album we never got to hear.

It's also worth mentioning the fabled Live in Izmir tape from Mayhem.

The background is Mayhem played 5-or-so really important shows in 1990: Jessheim in Norway, on February 3rd; Sarpsborg in Norway, on February 28th; Zeitz in Germany, on November 24th; Leipzig in Germany, on November 26th and finally Izmir in Turkey on December 9th. During that last show, the police shut the venue down a few songs in - which is simultaneously hilarious and makes the Live in Izmir quite unique in Mayhem's catalogue. While recordings of the first 4 shows have been circulated for decades as bootlegs (and Peaceville officially released them in 2016/7) the tape for Izmir was unfortunately lost and no-one's been able to find it since 1990.

Live in Izmir has fascinated me for years. Given how well documented the band's live material is otherwise, it seems like a bit of a glaring omission. This show was also apparently the last that Dead and Euronymous ever played together, which makes its loss just a little more sad in my opinion. I think it's also a bit of a shame Turkish Mayhem fans don't get to hear a piece of their scene's history the same way Norwegian and German fans do, even if it'd just be a handful of tracks at best.

If I remember right, I remember reading a youtube comment from someone claiming to be a promoter for that Izmir show. He said that while Euronymous requested a tape recorder, he was not provided one. While I can't verify that this guy is telling the truth, I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Hopefully an unoffically recorded bootleg exists somewhere, cause I would kill to hear this show.

The Australian death metal band Infernal Method recorded their debut album 'Architecture of Instinct' while their first vocalist, Joss Separovic, was in the band. The band broke up and reformed without him (and with a new second guitarist), and re-recorded the vocals with their new vocalist. The full recording with Joss should exist. Now that the band is long since broken up, it'd be nice to hear it as a comparison.

I've always been curious about the Dehumanizer demos with Tony Martin on vocals.

NWOBHM band Archie the Leper had additional recordings in their discography which are considered "lost" and no doubt there are many bands that have sadly been lost through the mists of time, that people have forgotten about.

On the spotify thing he did I believe he said it was more like a collection of some riffs/ideas, without even fully realized songs, much less a fully recorded album.

Quorthon said many times over the years about there being a lot of unreleased Bathory material in the vaults. The most interesting being the 'Necronomicon/Malificarum' 4 track EP from 1984, the 'Occulta/Okkulta' 6 track EP from 1985 and the original 'Requiem' LP from 1989 (nothing to do with the crap one released in 1994), that Quorthon once said was a "speeded up version of Reign in Blood". I'm not sure how complete all these were, and indeed some of the master tapes apparently went missing, but some tracks appeared on the 'Jubileum' albums. Gotta say, I would have loved to have heard the original 'Requiem' album. I guess we never will now, especially as Quorthon's father (also, Bathory producer and owner of Black Mark Productions), Boss, died in 2017. Which is a shame, because during an interview, many years ago, Quorthon said that when Bathory came to an end he would release all this unreleased stuff for his fans. What a pisser!

Yeah, I don't remember ever reading that they recorded and scrapped a full album. They just scrapped whatever riffs / rough song ideas they had started after Watershed, in favor of doing something new. There's definitely no "lost" fully-recorded Opeth album sitting in a vault somewhere.

Supposedly Metallica have a lot of material that they have recorded over the years that's never been released. It's all demos of songs that never made it onto albums. I've heard that when they're preparing for an album they write a lot of songs (as many as 20) and then choose what they consider the best ones to appear on the album. We got a taste of some of the B-sides from the Death Magnetic sessions on the Beyond Magnetic EP from 2011 which has 4 songs that didn't make it onto the album.
