Bathory - Through Blood And Thunder

Vocals sound a bit better than Hammerheart I think.

Raven - Wiped Out

Fire Power is the epitome of NWOBHM

Mercyful Fate - Satan's Fall

The way these motherfuckers ran with the old hard rock stuff they were into and made it sound this crazy and evil, through the distortion, guitar sound, general writing style... it's really quite something.

Dismember- Hate Campaign

Not familiar with these mid career records but this one has some great melodic flourishes to go with the rusty chainsaw riffage….

Dismember- The God That Never Was

Great record- the three that they did before splitting was probably some of the best of their entire career

Runemagick - Dark Deeds of Temptation

Probably their best out of the doom/death metal era; a never-ending feast of amazing riff after amazing riff here.

Oufff. This whole record is coming on strong for my year-end list.

Amorphis - Grieve Stricken Heart

Surprise, surprise....but I sort of like it. The band sounds confident about the direction they had headed into here and I like this vocalist way more than the overdramatic dreadlock head that would front the band's Disney-metal albums (which have been what? Their last 7 albums by now?).

Cathedral - Carnival Bizarre

Definitely a case for still buying CDs with this crazy artwork coming with it. Musically it's just a take no prisoners romp. Massive grooves.

Listened this quite much lately. Some of the best Sabbathian doom that's not Sabbath. The artwork is of course great too.

They were a case where I guess I sort of expected something more out-there or even avant garde, what with the time they debuted and all. But it is growing on me. It's just great genre work.

Baazlvaat - The Night Castle

There's a real sense of fun and groove to this that makes it stand out from other "retro" kinds of acts.

Savatage - Power of the Night

This gets a bad rap, it's quite badass actually. Even goofy stuff like Hard for Love still brings plenty of riff-swaggering power.

The Chasm - Secret Wings of Temptation

This remains one of the most passionate, cinematic and downright epic death metal albums of all time; sort of like an expanded variant of The Karelian Isthmus-era Amorphis.

Novembers Doom - Nephilim Grove

Measured autumnal greatness. I love how they utilized the full range of their riffing and vocal styling.

Alcatrazz - Sword of Deliverance

Great music on here and Joe Stump is the perfect Yngwie clone but goddamn are Doogie White's vocals are annoying as fuck!

Mercyful Fate - Egypt

This is a lot of fun. More condensed and simplified, but it's still them. A pretty sweet tune.

Invocation Spells - The Flame Of Hate

This band used to be almost spammed by heavy metal journalists in the Greek Metal Hammer magazine back in 2009-2012. Never checked them though. I will some day.

New Memory Garden and it is amazing, best they sounded in years. Everything is pretty much perfect power/doom, sound, vocals, songwriting (that chorus...). I'm fairly certain this will be up with the best of the year...

Amorphis - Summer's End

Never thought I'd say this but this is actually pretty catchy stuff as far as non-death metal Amorphis goes - definitely prefer it over Tales / Elegy.

That's one of my favorite songs of theirs. It always receives play around late August/early September to match the theme. I probably prefer those sorts of tracks myself (also "Alone", "Divinity", "The Way", and such), though it's really close for the Pasi era.

Still wondering why the hell Efemey kept on burying Koskinen's growls when mixing; Summer's End is the worst offender, but all these songs (and Goddess) worked so much better live, with the full range of vocal expression as envisioned by the singer, not the producer.

That whole era was such a weird transitional time for so many similar bands. They'd mostly grown tired of the death/doom sound and were trying to find other interesting things to do musically, experimenting with various flavors of the time. It's like they wanted to still have some connections with the earlier material, but were afraid to make them too prominent, so made them sparing and back in the mix.

NP: Emma Ruth Rundle - "Blooms of Oblivion"

I love how this manages to be so atmospheric without even needing much of any reverb or lush production behind it. I can't stop listening to it, and hope the rest of the album holds up. Heavily downtuned acoustic guitar is quite an underrated instrument.

Indeed.

Lantlos - Wildhund

Giving this band and album a chance. I like it so far.

Spammed? Pain of Salvation was rightly hyped. Unique and well-crafted albums. 2009 onwards was not their peak of creativity though. But The Perfect Element is such a great record still.

They were a much bigger deal in the 00s (at least in prog and artsy-inclined communities), and I still love their first few albums, but their newer material hasn't hit me yet, and I haven't really been in the mood for nostalgia for them recently either. Maybe one day.

NP: Spiritbox - "Sun Killer"

Definitely going to be one of my top handful of non M-A metal albums of the year, so many standout tracks.

Got a free few months of Apple music with a new iPad so trying some stuff out I have avoided over the years.

Celtic Frost - Vanity/Nemesis - Wings of Solitude

Okay, definitely listenable so far even if a far cry from the first two CF albums.

Too bad they don't have Cold Lake on this service.

There's just nothing like them really.

Deceased - As the Weird Travel On

Hungry, strident madness.

Entombed - Blessed Be

As good as Left Hand Path is, this album is just better in every way to me. More character, the songs are catchier and tighter, etc.

Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath

Likewise, while Melissa is great, DBTO just has the more inimical, powerful set of songs to my ears.
