Coffins - Forgotten Cemetery

Doom/death from Japan, one of my favorite bands from this past decade.

Saturnus - I Love Thee

Bloated, yet delicate doom/death metal here...could have done with some shorter songs or faster riffs incorporated here and there.

Chris Cornell - Euphoria Mourning

This album was something special. Very Beatles-esque but also obviously Jeff Buckley influenced. Most of the tastefully off sounding bits are strictly Cornell though and some of what his writing style had been in Soundgarden.
'Preaching the End of the World' is solemn but really beautiful.

Dream Theater - The Astonishing

After so long... I think it has finally grown on me. There are a lot of great riffs here... just a lot to go through!

Entombed - Blessed Be

As good as Left Hand Path is, this album is just better in every way to me. More character, the songs are catchier and tighter, etc.

It's fine that you prefer that one over LHP but how the hell is it catchier? The songs are arguably more ''proggy'' (when it comes down to Swedeath standards) and thus, less instant.

Speaking of Swedish death metal - NP: Grave - For Your God

Not a huge fan of this band, but you can't really go wrong with early Swedish death metal as far as I know.

I don't think so at all, the songs actually sound much more melodic and hooky to me - LHP was more of a straight up bludgeoning but Clandestine saw them trying some different writing styles and taking more from older classic metal. Then later on they'd just keep doing that. Can't really say I hear much prog in Clandestine.

I only have his Higher Truth album which I remember being good, but I got it like right before a huge upheaval in my life and then the pandemic happened, so I forgot about it. Is this album similar in style?

Wardrum - Sands of Time

There's something weighty about their stuff which doesn't always lend to repeated plays, but it does get the job done. Heavy, direct stuff.

Great call. This is a criminally overlooked album.

Pearl Jam - Let The Record Play

A cut off the album that came out when my PJ fandom was in decline. Always loved their music but lyrically they weren't connecting with me as much. Going back and listening to this and its a lot better than I used to think, this track has some nice leads.

This is a bit more artistic where Higher Truth is more straightforward. The atmosphere of the songs is ambivalent in the sense that it can turn a dime from bright while the lyrics are solemn - that draws out this nostalgic quality - to moody and sorta frantic. His singing is as soulful as always. He oversings the hell out of "Mission" but I would too if I had a voice that good.

Swans - In My Garden

This just sounds so perfect right now.

That does sound right up my alley really. I'll have to try it.

Briton Rites - Strange, But Beautiful

I really don't think there's anything wrong with this album. Just a great album in every way.

Celestial Season - Cherish My Pain

Not quite as refined as their sophomore album, but it's still pretty decent.

Nasum - Inhale/Exhale

There are legit 27 000ish songs on this album....and it still only goes for 45 minutes.

Anacrusis - Sense of Will

OK, I definitely get the hype behind this one.

Root - Zjeveni

Truly sounds like you're just walking in on a Satanic ritual. Wild and evil and insane.

Dream Theater - A View from the Top of the World

It's not bad but stuck in a rut, alive and well but creatively as stiff as a corpse in the early commuter traffic.

Green Lung - Black Harvest

Got this one on repeat. It's even better than their debut imo.

Megadeth - Holy Wars... the punishment due

Never really got into Dave and the boys so I decided to start from the classics. Incredible, the whole Rust in Peace album.

Therion - Illusions of Life

Quite a hit-or-miss Swedish death metal that's arguably quite progressive in a way. The highlights are great, though.

Suffocation - Pierced From Within

Death Metal perfection. 10 outta 10.

Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten

91 was a vintage year for heavy music and this album blew my fuckin mind when it came out. So fuckin heavy! Easy 10.

Suffocation - Breeding The Spawn

The songs rule, the production stinks. Coulda been a 10.

Mercyful Fate - Into the Unknown

Inspired by the recent KD vs MF thread...
Anyway, this album has some fine moments, such as the opening bass/drums of "15 Men", and the last 90 seconds of "Listen to the Bell". And the title track is a classic. Probably a better record than I remember it being.

Tiamat - Equinox of Gods

Forgot that this track featured some black metal riffs and blastbeats...but holy shit, besides Edlund's vocals, this doesn't sound like Tiamat at all - talking about a force attempted to get back to a heavier sound.

Dark Millennium - Below the Holy Fatherlands

Wow, where did this came from? Sounds like unreleased Death's album done in doomish vein...

It's much better than Death had ever released though. :P

Mutilator - Immortal Force

Forgot that this is actually pretty cool thrash/death metal. Like a missing link between Morbid Visions and Schizophrenia-era Sepultura.

Lana Del Rey - Nectar of the Gods

Don't know what to make of this new Lana album yet but I like this song. Then again, I liked some of the sparse, folkier bits of the last one and this is mostly a continuation of that. A few incredibly dull moments that should have been cut though.

Root - Casilda's Song

This stuff is just fucking crazy. Few bands have captured the feel of being trapped in Satanic underground catacombs this well.

Delirium - Beyond the Gates of the Afterdead

My favorite doom/death metal album from 1990. It's very Celtic Frost-ish at times, but the band doesn't forget about the doom riffs either.

Mercyful Fate - 9

Classic Mercyful Fate from start to finish. So many highlights like kick ass opener "Last Rites", the Sabbathian "Church Of Saint Anne", eerie psychedelic "Sold My Soul", massive riff stomper "The Grave", the storming "Insane" and the monumental "Buried Alive". Hell the whole album is a highlight! To the devil his due. 9/10.

Vampirska - Encompassing Death's Lifeless Flame

Seriously good riff moment that takes over the whole second half of this epic song.Kind of takes you by surprise after all the cold darkness before it,topped off with an oddly tuned acoustic outro. Nice.

Evoke - Deadly Revenge

Fuck yes more bands like this! Evil, Marshall-distorted Hell Awaits thrash from Norway with lyrics about, uh, evil or something. Awesome riffs!
