My kinda thrash... they just sort of play unrelentingly feral, insane shit. Vocals are a wonderfully gruff holler without being too black or death sounding, and the guitar tone and writing don't really seem to ape anything from the old days too much. Just a manic frenzy of sound.

Really dug this one too. Brutal thrash and prog/tech thrash seems to be the way to go for newer thrash bands, both styles have had killer releases in 2021.

Empire of Tharaphita - Beyond the Astral Sea - Kältas Ekwä

To bad this band never released an album, really good stuff!
Turned into Mooncitadel though, also a great project.

I always said thrash is as much a spicing and style to apply to various kinds of writing as it is an actual genre.

Scythian - Pray to War

Going for double with the aggression.

Steel Bearing Hand - Slay In Hell

While we are on the topic of great modern thrash, this is another one that really stood out to me. Love the mixture of various influences on display here, you can tell these guys just love heavy fucking metal.

Not the words i would choose.
Every note and riff is played with sincere dedication, focus and brutal ferocity. They don't sort of do anything.

Vomitor - Tremendous Insane

Another contender for a song title award and always got time for that filthy guitar tone.

Witchcaster - "Temptress of Mankind"

Lo-fi, pretty scuzzy doom metal leaning toward the traditional ilk. It's pretty good if not all that captivating...the first tune, anyway.

David Bowie - Sorrow

Pinups is SO underrated. I get that the originals are holy for some people, especially the 60s purists, and I also love those original songs to death, but this whole LP is a winner. The Spiders gave them all a fantastic 70s glam update.

Another reason I'm listening to this is that I've been reading up on Mick Ronson and now I'm listening to every guitar lick on the albums he did with Bowie much more carefully. Didn't know he had also written the charts for all the orchestral parts.

Definitely the heaviest rocker off A Night At The Opera

Agalloch - The Hawthorne Passage

Great for snow days. Soaring melodicism. This is a standout on here for sure.

Chainsword - Blightmarch

These Poles definitely heard some Bolt Thrower in their day.

Jack White - Love Is Selfish

Growing on me, a nice little understated folk number. 180 from his last album, so I'm excited.

Carcass - Reek of Putrefaction

This is fucking great, don't get the negative reviews here at all. Pure mayhem, blazing originality.

Eternity's End - Necromantic Worship

I don't know why I just skimmed over this for so long. Great stuff. Like quintessential PM.

Voivod - Missing Sequences

Nothingface is a singular work. Sure, it builds on Dimension Hatross, but otherwise, there's little that's comparable to it.

Slaegt - Domus Mysterium

This definitely has the kind of groovy, propulsive guitarwork I like to hear. An interesting fucking band.

Satyricon - Havoc Vulture

An album showing a band moving further away from its roots. I think it was a good move but not sure how I feel about this album so far. Still black metal but shit is creeping into the sound and the feel is much different than ND. So far this may be my favorite cut as its growing on me. Digging the main riffage and tone.

I'm a fan who loves all eras of the band. Not a bad record in their discog.

My favs are the ones after this but ND is a killer slab of black metal. Just got RE and trying to digest it.

Surprised that you like it. I think it's alright, but to me the real Carcass classic is the follow-up!

NP: Ossian - Nehéz lesz minden nap

Another killer Ossian album. These guys have a serious good ear for hooks, blazing riffs and fun songs.

Gojira - Oroborus

I'm getting into their material quite a bit more more these days, slowly going from "pretty OK" to "hey, this is kinda awesome".

Fortitude was alright, but only has a few standout songs that aren't boring, I can't recall a single moment from Magma but now L'enfant Sauvage and The Way of all Flesh are kinda clicking. Some of that drumming is furiously wicked and their kind of groove is anything but dull.

Will keep listening.

Nocturna - New Evil

The title says it all. It's Frozen Crown (the same songwriter) with the Coronatus dual female lead vocals gimmick (pop and classical). The music seems to be largely secondary to the visual presentation, though.

Metal-influenced synthwave. Loving it.

Listening to None So Vile yet again. It's just as good every time.

Fortunately the music is a lot better than the budget 80s pulp artwork.

I like stuff that really just goes to far-out places and breaks boundaries. Reek is some wild and insane art. I admire it a lot. I still need to hear Symphonies and Swansong though.

Autograph - Cloud 10

I've always said that Danger Danger is the most underrated glam band, but I might have to change my opinion to Autograph. This album is great from start to finish, and the closing track, All I'm Gonna Take is essential heavy metal!

My quest for good slam/BDM continues. These guys are definitely up there.

Budgie - Squawk

After hearing the next three, this one is a bit underwhelming - but I really like this kind of general 70s bar rock with the weird grooves and such. My copy of Bandolier is supposed to be here in 2 days and I may as well just not play that again until then. Profound wild shit there.

That one moves well too. Had to actually check that out, didn't remember how it went.

EDIT: And the lyrics are fun.

Catacomb - Monument of Death

Lo-fi death doom from Slovenia. Apparently they went on to change names and play a melodic death/gothic blend not long after the recording of this demo. It's pretty good, and definitely leans more toward the death end of the death doom equation.

Xandria - A Prophecy of Worlds to Fall

"Neverworld's End" sounds like a long lost Tarja-era Nightwish album.
I enjoy it very much. Definitely doesn't reinvent the wheel (at all) but it's well done.

Any bands you'd compare this band to?

NP: Kruiz - Brave New World

Some wicked, blazing speed metal right here; I also love how this album features some longer tracks that aren't necessarily associated with this style.

Death Angel - Final Death

Smoking bay area thrash from a bunch of kids who put so many established bands to shame with this corker.
