Nuclear Assault - Third World Genocide

I do not get the hate for this record. Sure it could be faster but it has no groove crap, the riffage is there, it is fairly well produced and at times very catchy - PAY THE PRICE OF FREEDOM!

Orkblut - As Satan's Spark in Breathless Night

These Belgian BM bands are awesome, great 90's feeling to it.

Holy shit this is good. Didn't remember it was this good. Owes all to Sabbath of course, but that never stopped anyone.

They've quickly become my favorite traditional doom band at the moment. This album and The Black Powder are my absolute faves.

Cult Of Luna - Cold Burn

Massive! These guys never ever disappoint.

Much much better than I remember it being. Some rockin' stuff there to be sure. Sometimes reminds me of a more grungy The Cult.

The first 3 albums from Warrior Soul are fantastic. Nobody else like em.

I have to re-listen to the first two but if they are good as "Salutations..." then I will have to purchase them I think :)

Vio-lence - Flesh From Bone

This one is growing on me. Killian's definitely not bringing it like the old days, but the riffs really do and I can live with that. Sounds more and more like old Vio-lence the more I hear it. It reminds me a fair bit of Heathen's Bloodkult, which is a good thing.

Pyöveli - Pyöveli Attack.

Been binging on this band a lot lately. They're extremely underrated and unknown in my opinion. Really killer speed/thrash metal with tons of what I like to call satanic youthful vigor. It's fast, crude, nasty, and mean. Attitude over technical talent greatness that I feel fans of Razor, Violent Force, early Protector, early Sadus, and Slaughter Lord would be into.

That one moves well too. Had to actually check that out, didn't remember how it went.

EDIT: And the lyrics are fun.

My favourite is "Drugs, God & The New Republic", another great '91 album to add to the long list of great '91 albums. I have so many great memories of buying all these wicked albums in '91, totally spoilt. "Last Decade Dead Century" is just as good really. Don't think about, just get em!

In the coming days I will re-listen to those but if they are good as you say then I will surely find old copies and buy them.

Now:

Laaz Rockit - Know Your Enemy

More people need to bow down to this record. It is simply amazing! At points thrashy, at points USPM-y but still having the SPIRIT of metal permeate it. Michael Coons is also awesome on vocals!

Spiritus Mortis - Sunrise (Uriah Heep cover)

One of the best covers I've heard, ever. I'd really need that split with Fall of the Idols, but it's long gone.

The Icarus Line - Enemies In High Places

Mono is now 20 years old at least and has stood the test of time no problem.I visit it now and then and the album hasn't lost it's ability to reel you in all over again. They sound in parts like they're about to derail and succumb to their own chaos but always hang on with another major hook.
Amazing album.

Satans Wrath - Death Possessed

I kind of gave up on this debut so decided to give it another chance. This has a decent riff and there's good solos here and there but it's the guitar tone that lets it down the most.A plain old distorted sound that totally lacks character.

Jotunspor - Sol mun svartne

It's like Gorgoroth's Twilight of the Idols, but with a more industrial tinge to it. It's not bad if you can get into it, but it's not exactly something I'd listen to for the riffs. It's more a droning industrial type song than black metal.

Black Viper - Nightmare Mausoleum(The Sleeper Must Awaken...)

An absolute barnstormer and confident full stop to this great record. Not a bad tune on it.The album cover is almost a contender for the Cover Art Atrocities thread but they get away with it because the music is so awesome.

Guy Mann-Dude - Manic Distortion

I thought this was some kind of instrumental shredder type of album. Not so! This is some blazing thrash! Maybe the vocals are not the best ever but the riffage? Very good indeed!

Brocas Helm - Satan's Prophets

Like old Venom, it's a mess production and performance-wise, but it's so fucking badass and has so much energy behind it. True fucking rock and roll conviction. This is what it's about to me.

Gotta revisit that band sometimes.

NP: Ossian - A Torvenyen Kivuli

Retrying this band has been so much fun. They nail these pounding mid-paced tracks and become absolutely relentless with those speed metal assaults. I better start writing reviews for this band soon.

They don't have a lot of shit so it doesn't take much time anyway.

Slaegt - I Smell Blood

Always love finding new acts that get this kind of guitar styling right. Massive.

Beast in Black - They Don't Care About Us

Best Michael Jackson cover I've ever heard, it actually outdoes the original. Just stunning. Nothing on their new album comes close.

Have you tried their first album "Into Battle" yet? If I had to choose I would say its my favourite from them (all 3 are fuckin awesome tho), chock fulla great songs like Ravenwreck, Beneath A Haunted Moon, Into The Ithilstone and the mighty title track... crustier and looser than what followed but fully essential.

NP: Uriah Heep - The Magicians Birthday

Kicks off with the beautiful and timeless Sunrise and then proceeds to take you on a epic journey into fantasy. David Byron was helluva singer.

Vampirska - As Their Faces Fade from my Memory

Very long track.Extremely cold and harrowing.A world away from the velvet gowned giggling behind a keyboard high-pitched squeeling Rent-A-Ghost shite Cradle Of Filth have to offer.

Nah that was unavailable to buy, but I'll have to try it via Youtube sometime I guess. I'd say Defenders of the Crown is my favorite of the two I've heard because the guitars are beefier and it's longer, but it's all good so far.

The Magician's Birthday is the Uriah's Heep album I know the best. Good stuff. The title track is amazing.

Slaegt - The Tower

This band knows how to sustain interest with a pretty minimalist set of skills at the end of the day, nice guitars but nothing flashy or too gaudy or anything. It's good, meditative stuff.

Brocas Helm - Black Death

You guys made me re-listen to this one and I love it. Weird, quirky but still epic and METAL as fuck. Amazing stuff. Now I have to wonder if I should shoot for the first pressing go for the reissue with bonus tracks ;)

I actually replaced my originals with the reissues a few years ago. Had to get those demos and the booklets are superior. No regrets... yet.
Oh, and Laaz Rockit "Know Your Enemy" fuckin rules! My introduction to them was the awesome Self Destruct on some comp back in the day.

NP: Cauldron Born - Legacy Of Atlantean Kings

As far as rerecordings go this may be the greatest ever. Bloodbath In The Arena! Love it. Can't wait for the new album to turn up in the mailbox.

My issue with reissues is as usual - remasters and such. I wonder if there was any remastering done to the Brocas Helm discs.

Psychotic Waltz - Faded

This has always maybe been the weakest one, but I still go back to it. "Morbid" is a super fucking classy song and the writing is cool and direct.

Inner Wish - The Waves of Destiny

No shortage of song writing here. Both sides..full of catchy metal bangers.I need to venture further but this one will do for now.
Nod to Greece. You will be remembered.

Probably their weakest album overall but still has some amazing tunes and "out there" vocal lines and melodies.

It seems like they definitely lost something when the bassist left before this album, but yeah there's still good shit on it. "Skeleton" crushes too.

Inner Self - Have you Ever...?

Another gem from side B.Not done with this one yet.
Glorious acoustic intro..this is when the production gets a bit 'iffy'.
All good they sorted it.

Had a quick nosey around MA and Discogs and no mention of a remaster. Unfortunately my copies are buried away in a box in the wardrobe under other boxes of cds. I'll dig em out today and see if theres any info in the booklets for ya. The original recordings were not great to begin with tho, I'd be surprised if the reissues don't sound better overall. DNR database only has the reissues so can't compare and that doesn't tell the whole story anyway when it comes to sound. Out of complete blissful ignorance I didn't keep a rip of the originals. Louder = better back then! Fortunately (Unfortunately for my bank account) I know better now.
Sound... it's all in the ears of the beholder.
