St. Vincent - Year of the Tiger

This one fell by the wayside to some of her other ones, but it's pretty great all the way through... a chilly, eclectic pop rock sound. Some great melodies.

Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding

You can see where Barnes was heading on the groove tip here - interesting that the rest of the band then went more tech death for the Corpsegrinder era....

Motorhead - 1916 (album)

This one really stretched the limits for them, almost every song is wild and different really. Very cool songs overall.

Motorhead - Jailbait

The 40th anniversary remaster of this is absolutely gorgeous. God, the lead guitar tone. Masterful.

Izah - Sistere

Too bad these guys are only on one album, but at least it rips. Clear The Ocean/Cult of Luna derivative, but done with enough quality to stand on its own.

You know, that's why I love browsing this thread - jumped back to around 2013 at random and I'm now listening to:

Altered Aeon - Dispiritism

What the hell is that? Who are these guys? They only got this album and it's pretty damn impressive thrash metal that does neither fit into the "modern" nor the "oldschool" tags of the genre - with a vocalist that sits somewhere between Johan Liiva and Pro Pain. Weird but good!

Edit: Yes, Forbidden is in there too, in vocals and riffing!

Hammerfall - Renegade

Cheesy as ever but enought riffage and catchy choruses to make it thoroughly enjoyable!

Budgie - Hammer & Tongs

In for the Kill has grown on me - for some reason it was a bit harder to parse than the others around it. Heavy and dense.

Be sure to pick up volumes 1 AND 2, as well as the Digital EP called "A Peace of Time", which contains even more 70s covers. Awesome stuff.

NP: Rainbow - Bent Out of Shape
A recent post here prompted me to check this out again. It's as good as I remember it being.

Heavens Gate - The Neverending Fire, off Livin' in Hysteria

This is what I call epic heavy metal. Pomp, bombast, and dramatic turns of phrase. Like an opera made of clashing steel.

I would never call Heavens Gate particularly EPIC. Melodic, powerful and excellent? Sure! But they are no Manilla Road ;)

Oh, it's that one song, for the most part. It has a really nice, bombastic stomp to it that makes it grandiose. They mostly just rock really fucking hard.

Heavens Gate - Can't Stop Rockin', off Livin' in Hysteria.

Cheesy arena rock, but man, it works for me.

Mystery Blue - Metal Attack

There's really just a kind of intangible writing quality that some of these old school bands have and other bands don't - just the sense of groove, the hooks, the way the songs are put together. This definitely has it all.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Someday I Suppose

Pretty fun 90s ska-punk.
Kinda sucks that they broke up simply because they're a great live band, even if they haven't put out an album I've enjoyed for quite some time.

Mithotyn - King Of The Distant Forest

Glad I nailed the original press (digi) for this year in great shape for dirt cheap.

[edit] Holy shit "Ragnarokk" doesn't fit on this at all

Conqueror - Nuclear.Cult.Supremacy

I've been spinning this live album since it first came out, and it's great to hear nearly all of WCS in a live audio format for the first time. Might have to review this one.

Itus - The Chaplain

Thick throaty doom with old-style riffing and the vocals of a wretch. Killer!

Soulgrind - Into The Dark Vales Of Death

This one is better than I remembered. They actually still exist and appear to be recording new material.

This is pretty filthy and uncomfortable sounding.

Iron Maiden Senjutsu- Whole album. After taking a month long break, decided to listen again. I love it, even more. The one song that can go is Time Machine but whatever, it's a great record, if you don't like it, you just don't like Maiden. Your loss.

Bethlehem - Dictius Te Necare

All I can say is their song structures are wonderful and I truly adore those depressive undertones.

I don't like Maiden, but I love IRON Maiden, unfortunately they lost the IRON after '92. Bit of a shame really.

It really doesn't feel that long at all, brilliant stuff.

Motorhead - Civil War

Never tried this album before... starts off pretty fuckin heavy.

The Storyteller - Underworld

I shouldn't have parted with this CD, this ain't bad at all. I probably should check out their 2 recent CDs while I'm at it.

The Storyteller - Dark Legacy

Not bad, reminds me a little bit of Paragon.

Shining - V: Halmstad

There will never be a better Shining album, that's a fact.

Neurosis - No River To Take Me Home

Going deeper into their folkier side on this one and yielding moving results. It is the usual confessional and spiritual lyricism but delivered in a cleaner, almost grungy tone which some hated...but real ones know it is informed by these guys' folk influences.

Speaking of which

Both. Doom metal doesn't typically have vocalists singing in the quiet pleading tone only Layne Staley could pull off though. Nor does it have lyrics of this confessional calibre, that's a grunge thing. But this sort of riffing is not a grunge thing. It's closer to sludge more than anything.

Grunge is not a term that can denote a style. There have been grunge bands who - while having thing in common - were really different in ideas, influences, execution etc.

So for some DOOM metal:

Iron Man - The Passage

Absu - Tara (pre-production demo)

The drums are very much in the front in this, so you can hear all the details in the insanely tight drumming.

They're also in the on the actual album, wouldn't you say? Can't say that I'm a fan of that album either way. Absu's 90's stuff was superb though!

NP: Malevolent Creation - Confirmed Kill

Heh, this first demo sounds a bit like Dark Angel. Way more exciting than their full length albums from what I've heard.

Whole album was really good. This band has so much good shit.

Budgie - You're the Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk

This might be my favorite song title by them.

Holy Terror - Terror And Submission

Beyond great. Speedy, dark, unique, punky but melodic vocals. This might be my favourite thrash band EVER.

Also own this baby on first japanese pressing with OBI!
