For WASP I would say go for the first album - it's the catchiest and most accessible I think, at least of their better albums, and it gives you a good idea of the groundwork for the band, who would later go on to add more to the sound in some of the later albums.

I'm not the best authority on either, but for Mercyful Fate I would say you couldn't go wrong with Don't Break the Oath, and King Diamond my favorite is definitely Abigail. Not a fan of those others so can't comment.

The Headless Children I'd say. It's heavier, darker and more serious than W.A.S.P's earlier stuff.

Headless Children might be the better album, but it wouldn't be my personal recommendation as a starting point. It's much denser and weirder overall.

What the hell is so weird about it? The fact that it features a cover of The Who? :p

God it's been years since I played any WASP. I ought to go back. Headless Children was always easily my fav but The Last Command and Crimson Idol were close enough.

Anyone looking for some recent power metal that riffs pretty hard? Don't mind the artwork; this has more in common with USPM than Europower - really, I promise!

This sounds a lot like early-90s USPM demo stuff - Talisphere, Oracle, etc. Really neat.

Here's something else I found recently. Atmospheric prog/power with that old US twist to it. It's familiar, yet exciting; think of what Crimson Glory could have ended up like, had they gone into a more progressive direction instead of playing dumbed down hard rock. The vocalist has some Midnight-esque manners, too.

How on earth have you missed Lord Bane? I have been plugging them for at least a decade, and they have been posted several times in this very thread.

Not everyone is a USPM nerd like you here, my friend! :p

In all seriousness, I actually checked them many years ago, but found them rather forgettable back then. Granted, I like more of this stuff now than I did years ago, so there's that.

New Allen/Olzon/Magnus Karlsson album coming from Frontiers Records Factory.
Quote:
"Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce that the dynamic trio of Anette Olzon, Russell Allen, and Magnus Karlsson have crafted a follow-up to the well-received debut Anette/Olzon album, "Worlds Apart"! The follow-up album, "Army Of Dreamers", set for release on September 9, 2022, once again pairs two world class singers in Olzon and Allen together for a tour-de-force of stunning melodic metal that only the ever-talented Karlsson could craft"

Looking for bands similar to Avantasia. Nightwish is the closest I can think of right now.

^ How about Aina? https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Aina/15306

Only one album, but it ain't too bad. It has its finer moments. Overall score is 53%, but I'd say it's definitely more above average. The main people behind it are or have been involved with Avantasia. And it features Tobias Sammet... Kiske... Matos... Hietala...

Savatage, Timo Tolkki's Avalon, Soulspell, Marius Danielsen's Legend of Valley Doom, Marco Garau's Magic Opera, Legado de una tragedia. And I remember liking Aina back in the day too.

Anyone here a fan of Heavenward from Germany? The debut is really good; USPM sounding stuff with plenty of acrobatic riffs, sick-soaring vocals and interesting arrangements.

So I just recently discovered Legend's masterpiece From the Fjords, and I need more. Any bands that similarly manage to capture the epic heavy metal feeling while still sounding 70s as hell?

Cirith Ungol's first two albums definitely retain a strong 70s influence in the guitars, as do the first two Manilla Road albums (Invasion and Mark of the Beast - the latter didn't receive an official release until 2004, but it's also undoubtedly the stronger of the two). Those are definitely the most 70s sounding of the post-Legend epic heavy metal catalogue to my ears, though now that I think of it, one random track that's simultaneously heavy metal with an epic bent and a strong 70s atmosphere is Breaker's "In Days of Heavy Metal" (just the title track - I wouldn't bother with the rest of the EP). That might be to your liking. Unfortunately Legend were pretty unique but hopefully that scratches the itch a little bit.

Thanks! I knew of those already but admittedly haven't listened much to Manilla Road pre-Crystal Logic, so I'll check those out! Cirith Ungol does indeed have a lot of 70s influence but their sound is still very much their own, whereas Legend sounds more like a 70s hard rock band trying to do the romantic nostalgia of epic heavy metal. Can't believe I've missed out on these guys for so long, absolutely amazing musicians and album.

I did some digging last night and found a band called Pagan Altar that comes somewhat close, although the vocals aren't nearly as nice and the sound is a little more doom oriented. Also this Breaker track is dead on, great recommendation!

Their third album, Mythical & Magical, is, along with their fourth album, The Rooms of Shadows, their least doomy albums. It is also their most highly acclaimed album. If you haven't heard it yet, I highly recommend you check it out.

Although Mythical & Magical largely moves away from the doom of their first two albums, it is still very much a heavy metal record. The Room of Shadows isn't very metal though. Still not a bad album, and I love the title track, one of the non-metal tracks.

Oh yeah for another band that blends doom with the 70s epic sound, Quicksand Dream's 'Aelin: A Story About Destiny' should do nicely, I forgot to mention them in my earlier post.

Really enjoyed that Quicksand Dream album, a little repetitive I guess but it definitely scratches the right itch. Gonna go deeper into Pagan Altar now and see what they're like. Thanks for the recommendations guys!

This latest Satan album is an absolute masterclass in clever riff-writing. Traditional heavy metal should not be able to sound this fresh in the year 2022.

Well, Full Moon's self-titled album definitely has some 70s touches as well, spacey prog a bit akin to Hawkwind mixed with a more epic sound.

And I guess I'll go ahead and mention Longings Past's Meadows of Maseilya, not overtly 70s but it's epic heavy metal with some Rush in the sound and a quite primitive riffing style that might be to your liking.

That's about everything I can think of in the epic heavy metal realm that's really got any kind of a 70s atmosphere or sound to it.

My god, Wytch Hazel are incredible. I think they're just about the only band I've heard approximate the Pagan Altar approach to English folk, and they hit an absolute moonshot with Pentecost. The chorus to Dry Bones is hair raising.

Yeah they're fairly different from how PA does it, but great stuff... the first two are very solid but III is just off to the fucking races. Magnificent melodic works.

I'm looking for some new power metal and could use help. I'm looking for power metal on the melodic or symphonic side, but the lyrics have to be in Japanese. I would prefer female vocals also but it's fine if not. I care about the songs being in Japanese the most. I'm familiar with Cross Vein, Dragon Guardian and 摩天楼オペラ (Matenrou Opera) so any bands that sound similar to them would be a bonus.

Hellz yeah, that's pretty badass, definitely some Tales from the Twilight World/Somewhere Far Beyond vibes. Any plans to release a full-length sometime in the future? From your MA page it looks like you've basically got enough singles to turn into one at this point, haha.

In other news, aside from the new Blind Guardian album, which definitely seems quite good so far though I'm still digesting it, I noticed Onward has a new album slated to come out on October 28th. Definitely didn't see that coming after Michael Grant's passing, that will be some big shoes to fill for sure but I'm always interested in whatever Toby Knapp is cooking, so I'm optimistic. The new vocalist, Robert van War, was apparently in the USPM band Attika, who are...okay...but hopefully with a chance to shine alongside some top-class songwriting he'll do well.

I often don't mind a bit of cheese when it comes to power metal, but there are times where there's just too much gimmicks over songwriting (eg. Amaranthe with their so-called "dancy pop-metal" and their hodge-podge of mixed clean and harsh vocals), so here are a couple of recommendations for power metal I don't find too cheesy:

-Japanese power metal bands such as Galneryus, Love Bites, X Japan, and Versailles have some gimmicks (eg. Rococo-era visual kei aesthetics for the latter), but they utilize high-quality technical playing and melodies in such a way that they look professional. The overtly kawaii stuff is pretty cringe in my opinion, but I understand that others enjoy it.

-Traditional USPM, unless if it's Manowar (which I'd consider the epitome of cheese), also tends to not be over-the-top, and is darker and more aggressive if you're into that. Stuff like Savatage, Iced Earth, and Chastain are some examples. Many of the bands besides Iced Earth and Manowar haven't been able to progress past the late 80s/early 90s, so the production isn't the best.

-Blind Guardian imo handles the fantasy aspect professionally, and IFTOS is one of the darkest European power metal records in history.

-Edguy has tons of silly humor, but it's mostly light-hearted stuff instead of the dumb gimmicky tropes common in metal nowadays, and they still take the music seriously. Much of their pure discography are pure bangers (eg. Hellfire Club).

-Tobi's other more active work Avantasia is on the flowery side of power metal, but has made some amazing songwriting and Meatloaf-esque theatrics for their post-Metal Opera discography, and is pretty versatile. The Mystery of Time and Moonglow are some of my favorite albums of all time. The project has often been leaning outside of metal and a bit more in pop rock at times, which I like, but if you're serious into metal, you probably won't.

-Kamelot is another non-cheesy band I'd consider. They're not too dark, nor are they too flowery.

What the hell?! I'm a fan of Onward. I have the "Never Ending Sun" demo, with a handwritten letter from Toby.
Robert van War is pretty much the worst vocalist I've heard in metal, judging by the trainwreck of an album that is When Heroes Fall. I am not looking forward to this.
