Succubus - Dreams in Blood

With chunky guitars and overwhelming keys, this almost sounds like a mix of Paradise Lost and Argentum. Certainly recommended for old school goth doom/death metal freaks.

Judas Priest - Nostradamus

For years I have ignored this album because of all the negative comments and I have to say that I have liked it a lot, easily an 8/10 although taking into account that I have only listened to it once.

TAD - Quick and Dirty

This band should be on the Archives, they’re more metal than say Alice In Chains or even fucking Soundgarden. Funny world.

I don’t know what the fuck I was thinking when I bought this but after a few listens, I can safely classify this as a turd. Won’t be looking for more post-90’s Stryper anytime soon.

I do like at least part of it, but they WERE running out of steam by then.

Yeah, there are a couple of not too bad songs but eh… I don’t know, it’s like listening to 90’s Aerosmith, which I’m not too fond of. But I’d rather listen to it again and again than listening to In God We Trust. That one is a real atrocity.

Stratovarius - Survive

Really something when an old band gets this heavy later in their career. Just massive sound here.

I find the album to be quite hit-or-miss, but the good stuff (the title track, "Firefly," "We are Not Alone," etc.) is precisely what I want from modern Stratovarius...or, really, Stratovarius in general.

It's all pretty consistent to me, not sure any of em are gonna be my favorite songs from the band but it's all very solid at worst and very good when it really hits.

Pentagram - Sur

Strato is pretty over-polished and it's good to balance that out with something like this - a more organic sound.

Pentagram - Lion in the Cage

This shit just kills - great heavy riff, a massive anthemic chorus. Classic.

King Diamond - Arrival

Abigail is the best metal album of any type ever made, and I will die on that hill a thousand times over.

Apotheosis - A Shroud of Belief

Has a strong 90's goth doom/death flavor to it, but it's guitar-centered enough to drive this long track forward.

Crucifist - Demon Haunted World. Awesome band, shame they didn't put out very much. I think it was just the one album and a demo before it.

Withermoon - "Reason for Existence" from A Testament To Our Will

Riff heavy black metal, and I'm digging it.

It’s definitely a 10/10. “Black Horsemen” is in league with Stairway To Heaven. Beautiful track.

Decided to do a marathon on the legends' entire catalogue. First album is amazing.

Trouble - "At the End Of My Daze" from the '90 S/T album.
This album began their 'golden era', IMO. This record, and especially "Manic Frustration", are masterpieces.

Imperial Triumphant - The Greater Good

A great closer to a great album. I've been listening to it for about 2 years now and I'm still finding new things to wrap my brain around.

I got to see them live on this tour with Zeal & Ardor and they were so good! All three members are just masters at what they do (they are an amazingly tight live band) and the only criticism that I have is that I wish their set had been longer. All the theatricality (the drummer sitting alone and completely still while their intro track played, the guitarist posing like Dracula in between songs, the bass player jumping in the crowd and wandering around and the whole thing with the champagne bottle used as a slide which was followed it being sprayed into the audience during the intro of Swarming Opulence),the fact that they never spoke to the audience( instead having a recording "hope that we enjoy their company this fine evening) just enhanced the whole package. 10/10 would see again.

King Diamond - The 7th Day of July 1777

I mentioned previously that I feel Abigail is the best metal album ever made, but this is my favorite song off it. Absolute magic from minute one to minute done.

Rainbow - Rising/Long Live Rock n Roll
The Chasm - The Scars of a Lost Reflective Shadow
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains

Getting back to some basics...

the past few hours:

Van Halen - debut
Traffic - Mr Fantasy In Santa Monica (live '72)
Y&T - Mean Streak (some great energy here)

My Dying Bride - A Line Of Deathless Kings
Paradise Lost - Medusa
November's Doom - Aphotic

A mix of 70s rock, some early 80s hard rock, and then autumn's best doom.

Iron Maiden - Beast Over Hammersmith

Killer live recording. Fairly raw recording quality (for better or for worse!) but the performances are excellent, with Bruce in his prime. Nice to have the setlist with a lot of Di'Anno-era material too, sets it apart from the zillion live albums the band's released that all just have the same set of '82-'92 classics plus a few songs from whatever the new album is at the moment.

Torture Squad - Towers on Fire

This shit is great. Holds up wonderfully. Just massive vitriolic thrashing and chugging and flailing.

Alice Cooper - Dead Babies. I love that little breakdown section in the middle.

Danzig - Eyes Ripping Fire. I'm completely unfamiliar with his stuff after the main core of the band left, but I'm enjoying this one.

Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated

I understand some may consider this record overrated, but there really is alot of gold in this album beyond Hammer Smashed Face, also Chris Barnes' best vocal performance IMO.

The combo of the setlist, Bruce's early vocals, and the band's hunger which emanates through this performance, are why this is a PERFECT live album. It's a shame this didn't receive the originally planned early 80s release. Had it been released as planned, it would likely have been considered the greatest live metal album ever. Or, at least, Maiden's best....easily dwarfing LAD.

I also highly recommend Samson's "Live At Reading 1981". This might be an even better performance by Bruce, albeit to lesser (but still great) songs. I believe this is the gig Harris and Smallwood attended and, afterwards, asked Bruce to join Maiden.

Sulphur Aeon - Gateway to the Antisphere

Sort of forgot about this for the whole pandemic. Pretty fucking incredible. All three of their albums are almost equally great. Just great involved, sweeping epic stuff.

Death - Symbolic

Right now, this is the only Death album I have. I can see why people like this. These riffs have power. Not that big on death metal outside Autopsy, but maybe I'll become a lover of Death some day.

Razor - Jabroni

Sounds good to me. Production's kind of wonky I guess but I'll take it over a processed Sneap job. It sounds like them whenever I've known them. Just in your face thrash with conviction.

Lyrics are what they are, fairly straightforward - better than Mustaine's drivel. And the vocals I guess I don't get the complaints about. Pretty cool gritty, throaty performance. I like it better than that hack from Vektor.

Megadeth - The Sick, the Dying...and the Dead!

The title track is my favourite so far. Don't think the album is all that amazing, but as with Dystopia, the title track has been made for "Megadeth Hits" playlists. Top tier.

Got to say I do kinda like the lyrics on these songs. And they have nice crisp runtimes.

Dead Void - Perpetually Circling the Void

Like an epic take on Cianide-esque doom/death metal. What a banger of a record!
