The only problem is that a great deal of them were just too overly shitty.

Falco's new one for Disaffected's 'Vast' is excellent. More than anything it inspires the thought of discovering an excellent band that was passed by in the madness of time. Another out of print CD that'll be a bitch to track down, too. (Thanks!)

Sacraphobic's new Dark Tribe review is superb, really catches the substance of that bizarre album.

Listening to a band with decent melodic construction is better than listening to a band who thinks that two-note dissonant riffs are somehow innovative?

I should not have to point out that saying a band has 'decent melodic construction' is akin to saying 'whao awseome riffs man!!111'

I shouldn't have to point out that "decent melodic construction" would mean phrases of reasonable length, complexity, and distinction, which avoid both overly-obvious, trite figures and tech-death-style "throwing loads of meaningless, random notes around".

You sound like you are trying to construct a sentence. To be frank, I find the
"over-analysis" of technique to be quite redundant. What Dark Tribe achieve is certainly not best expressed through academic rambling. I do not mind being vague myself, Sacraphobic nailed it better than I could.

TID is writing nice, if longish and quite serious reviews. They are atmospheric, and very descriptive in an evanescent and oblitescent way, and certainly have some fine moments.

He just submitted a couple of reviews for Drudkh, one for Meshuggah and one for SYL today. Check 'em out.

While it technically isn't that unusual I find the new Gutterscream review quite a wonderful read.

Gutterscream reviews always make me feel hopelessly awkward and clumsy in comparison. Which is to say that they're fantastic.

EDIT: As an adjunt, your review of the Symphonies Of Sickness demo is very nice. Kind of reminds me of my not-quite melodramatic descriptions, except, you know, well phrased.

Thanks, though I don't think it's deserved. It was just one of these short, spontanous reviews that I write sometimes just for the fun of reviewing.

I like those of yours. The little pure fragments that you do are very nice, such as your review of the Audiopain/Mysticum split 7"; then again, perhaps I'm also infatuated with giant reviews for tiny pieces.

This is becoming redundant, just like recommending Gutterscream reviews, but droneriot bashes Finntroll's Jaktens Tid with both nice comparisons and semi-fact based arguments. I had to award full points for it.

I don't agree completely, and I'd rate the album somewhere in the low 70's, but I do find the very same things annoying as he does. Then again, I'm only barely above drunken farting contests...

BTW, even if I like Finntroll as drinking music, they have not sparked any emotion whatsoever on the few occasions I've seen them live. They are technically almost too good, but somehow unambitious, and just play the songs in a way that could just as well be playback. I smell... a product?

The comparsion with Ska-P was awesome, but I still disagree. I wouldn't give it such a high rating as the other 5 reviews (maybe also somewhere in the low 70's), but Finntroll is great for an occasional listen. "but "Jaktens Tid" takes this overly superficial idea of fun to extremes beyond the most absurd fringes of tolerability." What? I don't think that the music is "funny" by usual standards, when I listen to the beggining of "Den Hornkrönte Konungen" feelings of happiness come up, but fun? No, not at all.

The problem with Finntroll IMHO is actually the listener never really knows what these guys want their music to be like. Nonetheless I seriously don't think this album is a "joke" - it's too well executed, and there is far too much songwriting research. And no, "fun" it's not.

Actually, to be aware of Finntroll's real skills just listen to Korpiklaani: exactly the same music, minus the inspiration.

But as I wrote one of my most positive reviews ever for Jaktens Tid... I may be a tad biased. And coming to what Napero says, I've never seen them live. It happens quite often that some bands whose albums I appreciate sound somewhat disappointing live (and vice versa) so it might well be the case with Finntroll, don't know.

What? There's a huge difference between Finntroll and Korpiklaani! Finntroll only use a keyboard to create the sound of folk instruments and Korpiklaani only use folk instruments, but no keys! Additionally, Finntroll without folk influences would be some kind of melodic black metal and Korpiklaani without their folk instruments wouldn't be BM at all, rather raw heavy metal or something!

You're right about this folk instruments thing (are you sure Korpiklaani NEVER use keyboards though?), but I was more referring to the general vibe and rhythmic line - both bands are based on polka / humppa beats, and both could be to a certain extent be considered as "drinking music", even if Finntroll is much more than that.

However even if I fully agree with you on the fact that Korpiklaani without the folk instruments would be to a certain extent close to traditional heavy metal, I always disagree with anyone saying Finntroll is folk-ish melodic black metal... I don't see many BM elements in Finntroll, apart from the vocals maybe? They're not really high-pitched, especially with Wilska on singing...

I seriously don't know what would be Finntroll without the folk influences... Nothing worth being noticed, I guess, even if Finntroll are rather good IMHO.

Okay, it seems that at least a few of ultraboris´s Judas Priest reviews (And maybe others) have been removed from the site... If anyone of you knew they actually still existed somewhere on web, I would have interest to read them

Thanks

 Well, there's a slight chance that the M-A has created restore points for deleted data or something, but I highly doubt it. Another possibility would be to simply email Boris, chances are that he saved all his reviews.
